Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

is actually the capital

city of Ethiopia. As a

Sodere

Sodere is a spa town in Ethiopia that has hot springs. It is one of the weekend get away places that people from the capital city Addis Ababa frequently go to. It has a natural hot spring. The resort campus has two swimming pools filled with warm water. The large one is open at weekends, the medium sized one mid week. This is to

enable them to be refilled weekly with the beautiful thermally heated water. The large pool has no shallow end, but does have a small non-swimmers area at the side.

Sodere lies alongside the Awash River and features lush, shady vegetation. Vervet monkeys live on the resort grounds. Crocodiles and, less frequently, hippos may be seen

In the nearby Awash River. The hot springs resort, popular for its therapeutic effects, is located outside the town. An Olympic size swimming pool, reportedly empty during the week, is a popular draw for weekenders

from Addis Ababa. Other features include a full-service restaurant, and a hotel and conference center.

What to see?

• The forests which fringe the river are also good for birds.

• There is a large naturally heated swimming pool, and a number of smaller pools throughout the grounds of the resort.

• Vervet monkeys and baboons are common in the resort, and

Sodere Located approximately 25 kilometers south of Adama (or Nazret) and 120 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa in the Misraq Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region with an elevation of 1466 meters above sea level. It is one of five settlements in Adama woreda.

Debre Libanos {the 13c Miracle}

After 103 km to the north of Addis Ababa there is a side road, which leads to the ancient monastery of Debre Libanos. The monastery was established by a 13th century Ethiopian saint called Abune Tekelehaimanot. There stands an imposing beautiful church with magnificent murals. Near by a 16th Century Bridge, which was said to be built by a Portuguese engineer, is spotted.

The monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River (the Blue Nile). None of the original buildings of

Debre Libanos survive. Current buildings include the church over Tekle Haymanot’s tomb, which Emperor Haile Selassie ordered constructed in 1961; a slightly older Church of the Cross, where Buxton was told a fragment of the True Cross is preserved; and five religious schools.

Along the side of the church, you cross a river and proceed on foot up a hill for about 15 minutes. According to legend, the Ethiopian Saint, Tekle Haimanot, prayed for 7 years (or 29 years, depending who you ask). The legend says that he stood on one foot for so long that the other foot fell off. Sick people queue to receive holy water (which is believed to be a sign of the saint’s prayer).

Tiya {a Prehistoric Tale Told in

Pictures…}

Not far from Addis Ababa, in the Soddo Region, is a field that contains steal found nowhere else in the world. A cemetery was

uncovered, with bodies buried in the position of prayer. We are in the very mysterious archeological site of Tiya, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1980. There are 40 steal in this cemetery. It is likely they were warriors, because the sword is the most predominant image on the steal. Bodies of people aged 18 to 30 were found. The largest stele, situated at the entrance of the site, was five meters. There are no fewer than 13 swords engraved on it, which means this warrior killed 13 enemies. No one has been to determine with any certainty the age of the steal, but the analysis of human remains suggests that they are from the period between the 10th and 15th centuries.

Adadi Mariam church

This rock-hewn church is a 600-year-old sanctuary in the building tradition of the northern part of Ethiopia, and marks the advent of Christianity in the southern part of Adadi Mariam. The rock hewn

church of Adadi Mariam, contemporaneous with those of Lalibela. In fact local tradition ascribes it to King Lalibela who is said to have had it built on his visit to Mount Zuqwala in 1106. Damaged during the wars with Ahmed Gragn in the 16th century, it fell into disuse and was only

reopened in the time of Menelik II. It is today in regular use.

The National Museum of

Ethiopia

The Ethiopian National Museum is

one of the leading Museum institutions

of the documentation about the culture

of the Nation from prehistoric until the

present. It provides also technical

advice to other Museums through out

Ethiopia.

It was founded at 1936/37 and during its 56 years of existence it has changed its location three times. At the beginning, it was located at the national library, and then it moved to the lounge of the National Bank. Finally it moved in the old building of the present compound which was formerly the ministry of foreign affairs. Since 1999 the Ethiopian National Museum, displays its collection in the new building which was purposely built for it!

At first, the National Museum started displaying a few collections donated by the royal family and their close associates.

At present, the National Museum

displays numerous artifacts mainly from

archaeology. The national museum of

Ethiopia has ethnographical, traditional

and contemporary art exhibits and

historical relics.

The present exhibition halls are divided in four sections:

1. The basement is devoted to paleontology and prehistory.

2. The first floor displays culture items from ancient, medieval and contemporary Ethiopian societies respectively.

3. The second floor is devoted to traditional and contemporary Ethiopian art.

4. At the third floor visitors have good opportunity to see the mosaic of ethnographic records of the country.

Addis Ababa, In the Ethiopian capital live five million people, from who three million arrived since the 1991 revolution. The city was only founded in 1887.The city's Ethnographic Museum is an ideal place to start learning about Ethiopia's rich ethnic diversity. It has an impressive array of religious crosses,

triptychs and murals, as well as Haile Selassies's bedroom and bathroom. The National Museum is much smaller, but it does have the fossils of 3.5-million-yearold 'Lucy', perhaps our earliest ancestor. Africa Hall is the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and was designed as a monument to African independence. It’s huge, richly colored stained-glass windows, by Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle; portray The history and diversity of Africa's peoples. If you'd like to see more of Tekle's work, visit the Giorgis Cathedral, built in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over the invading Italians. Addis Ababa's Mercato is the largest market in East Africa. It's a sprawling mess of open-air stalls, where you can buy everything From vegetables to gold jewelry. Menagesha-Suba forest The Menagesh Suba Park is known as

the oldest park in Africa. The 14th c

emperor Zera Yacob planted its first

trees, and the forest’s rich biodiversity-

leopard, giant African forest hog,

yellow fronted parrot and giant juniper

trees-is a living testimony to the

foresight of Ethiopia’s “first

conservationist.” It is situated some

35kms away from west of Addis Ababa

and it is densely wooded with some 400

years old trees. It is also a sanctuary

for several endemic birds and animals

such as the Abyssinian Catbird and the

Menelik Bush Buck.

Menagesha churches

Menagesha is also known by the

churches which are found around the

area. Most of them were built around

the Menelik II era. Also have a lot of

museums which includes books,

clothes, artifacts, Ethiopian ancient

manuscripts and old parchments. Some

Ethiopian scholars said, menagesha was

the places were the right hands cross of

Christ were placed for a several year

before taken to the mount. Menagesha also said to be a best place for a short

and memorable trekking site…at the

top of mount menagesha we can found

Addis Alem church

Addis Alem founded by Menelik II as it was his capital before he moved back to Addis Ababa is famous town for the church of Debre Zion on the top of a small hill. In early 1900 Emperor Menelik II found Addis Ababa to be an “impossible capital” and decided to move to Addis Alem (meaning ‘New World’) where a palace was constructed. However, due to some practical reasons the plan was abandoned. Menelik returned to Addis Ababa in 1902 and the palace was later converted into a church. The church is Debre Tsion St. Mary. The church and sanctuary are decorated with an amazing variety of interesting paintings depicting wildlife, biblical scenes, and various Ethiopian rulers. Near the church a museum contains the clothes and decorations of several former rulers and their families, and south of the church compound is the restored

part-time residence of Menelik. Below this building is the large, elliptical former dining hall. The tukul west of the compound was once the kitchen.

Forty-six species of animals have been identified here, including beisa Oryx and Swayne’s hartebeest. The bird life is prolific especially along the river and in the nearby lake Basaka and there are Fine endemic ones amongst the 392 Species recorded. A special Attraction is the beautiful clear Pools of the Filwoha hot springs. Access to the park is best from the Main Addis Assab highway. Here is a Caravan lodge Kereyu Lodge at the Edge of the gorge. Caracal inhabit Awash National Park. On the other hand, Fantale creator/volcano and on the Southern flank of which can be seen the dark scar of the latest lava flow of 1820 is one of The main features of Awash National Park. The park takes its name from the Awash River which marks the park’s southern boundary. The rivers last gesture is the salt lake, Lake Abbe, on the Ethiopia-Djiboutian border. Lake Zeway

Lake Zwai South of Addis Ababa, some 160 kilometers away, lies Zwai, the northernmost and largest lake in

the chain. It is filled with fresh water and extends over 434 square kilometers. The lake’s average depth is Four meters. Its extensive aquatic vegetation attracts a variety of interesting water birds. Commonly seen and easily identified are the long-tailed cormorant, darter, and various herons and storks – including the distinctive saddle bill stork. Wading through the water lilies are long – toed marsh birds such as the greater jacana. The National Museum This famous museum, close to the University of Addis Ababa Graduate School, houses numerous Antiquarian relics and archaeological artifacts showing the history of Ethiopia from prehistoric times to the modern day. Its most famous exhibit is the 3.5 million year old skeleton of Lucy Mount Entoto Addis Ababa is built in the foothills of Mount Entoto, and the panorama from the peak (3,200m3, either by day or night, is a breathtaking spectacle. The Church of St Mary (1885) overlooks the entire city and the surrounding area. The Entoto Museum, with its historical exhibits is well worth a visit The Jubilee Palace On Menelik II Avenue, this modern palace was completed to commemorate

the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I. The park is home to a collection of rare indigenous wildlife. Zoological Natural history Museum The only natural history museum in Ethiopia with exhibits including examples of most of our indigenous wildlife, often displayed in panoramas showing the relationship of the animals to their natural habitats. Trinity Cathedral Trinity Cathedral was constructed by Emperor Haileselassie in 1947 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The architecture of the cathedral is very unique to both Ethiopia and Africa. It is ornamented with carvings and mosaic and other artistic works such as paintings of saints and the apostles on the stained glass. Within the compound and gardens of the church are found the crypts of the Imperial family. Africa Hall The Africa hall, which is situated opposite to the Grand palace, is the seat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. It was built in 1961 by Ethiopian government as a monument to African Unity. In the lobby there is a stained glass window by Ethiopia's most well known artist, Miter Artist, World Laureate Afework Tekle, depicting the Africans of yesterday, today and tomorrow in their struggle for freedom and progress. The Markato

The grand market (Markato) is a place where a commercial activity of the capital city takes place. It is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. The normal market days are Wednesday and Saturday. It is true that anything you might want can be found here, only if you know where to look. Markato is not only Addis Ababa's commercial center, but also the dynamo of the country's business and industry. Here bargaining is a way of life.

Debra Brehan and Ankober

Drive 140kms north east of Addis

Ababa to visit Debre Berhan, the city

founded by King Zera Yacob (1434-

1468). It was important in the earlier

days because of its proximity to

Ankober and the trade route through

the rift valley to the coast. There is a

large wool factory and the teacher

training institute in the town. Ankober,

located a short distance of 43kms from

Debre Berhan, is built on the edge of

the great escarpment of the rift valley.

It is also founded by King Zera Yacob in

the 15th C. Ruins of the palace of King

Sahle Selassie and his predecessors are

worth visiting in the area.

Blue Nile Gorge

The Blue Nile Gorge is located 130km north of Addis Ababa and is the second Largest gorge in the world after the Grand Canyon in the U.S. For a million years the Blue Nile has been carving this 1,000m deep, nearly 20km wide and over 600km long gash through the Ethiopian Highlands. It is an enormous semicircle that heads first south, slowly turns west, and finally swings northwards as it leaves the hills, spilling into the flat plains bordering Sudan.

Already the drive provides you an amazing view. From the highlands huge rivers pour into the gorge and make the Blue Nile to the big river for which it is known. The whole region convinces with its natural beauty and is famous for its wide variety of birds.

Addis Ababa

In 1886, Menilik

needed to

change his

capital from a

small town

called Addis

Alem to a more

central location.

The initial site

selected for the

palace was

Entoto, the hilly

area north of

present day Addis. The palace site was

later changed to the present location

on the recommendation of his wife,

Taitu, who was already finding the

natural hot springs (Filwoha) at the

foot of the mountain a much better

place than the chilly heights.

By the beginning of the century the

new city was well established with

several large buildings and growing

population as well as eucalyptus trees

imported from Australia.

Addis Ababa is almost exactly at the

center and serves as the hub of the

country. It is connected by major high

ways with the surrounding regions.

Melka Kuntire

(Prehistoric site) It is regarded to be one of the most Stone Age sites in Ethiopia. Although no human fossils have ever been found, the layers of rock uncovered by the river (Awash) contain large numbers of Stone Age arte facts such as hand-axes and cleavers.

Melka Kunture lies in the upper awash valley, 50 km south of Addis Abeba. The site, discovered by Gerard Dekker in 1963, was surveyed by Gérard Bailloud in 1964, and then systematically explored by a French mission directed by Jean Chavaillon (1965-1982 / 1993-1995), and subsequently, since 1999, by an Italian mission directed by Marcello Piperno for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, in agreement with the Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Oromia Culture and Tourism Bureau.
