Frederick Chatfield......Christ United Methodist ChoirWords are those of Hymn No. 330

Gilbert M. Martin.....................Christ United Methodist ChoirThou, whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight. Hear us, we humbly pray, and wherethe gospel’s day sheds not its glorious ray; Let there be light, let there be light! Thou who didst come to bring,on thy redeeming wing, healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the blind. O now, to all mankind;Let there be light, let there be light! Spirit of truth and love, life-giving, holy dove, speed forth thy flight; Moveo’er the water’s face, bearing the lamp of grace; And in earth’s darkest place; Let there be light, let there be light!Holy and blessed three, glorious trinity, grace, love, and might! Boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the world far and wide; Let there be light! Let there be light!

Introit: Felix Mendelssohn....................................................Jerry Taylor, directorHoly, holy, holy is God the Lord of hosts! All the nations are filled with Thy renown.Hoseanna sing on high! And praise be He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hymn No. 2: ....................................tune:(congregation standing)

Invocation.................................................................................................CongregationMerciful and truth-filled God, we have erred and strayed from Your ways likelost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our ownhearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone thosethings which we ought to have done; and we have done those things whichwe ought not to have done. Spare those who confess their faults. Restorethose who are penitent, according to Your promises, and help us rememberthat it is Your truth that will set us free. Amen.

Anthem: Sir Hubert H. Parry.................................................................ChoirsI was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand in thy gates, OJerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city that is at unity in itself. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shallprosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces.

Scripture: .........................................................................Rev. Deb EgloffDear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never doanything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you comeupon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed inChrist! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup ofsoup—where does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageousnonsense? I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, "Sounds good. You take care of thefaith department, I'll handle the works department." Not so fast. You can no more show me yourworks apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove.

Prayers of the People...........................................................................Rev. Deb Egloff

Sweet flowers that perfumeall the air, thank Him that He hath made you fair. Alleluia. Burn lamps of night, with constant flame, shine to thehonor of His name. Alleluia. Thou sun, whom all the lands obey, renew His praise from day to day. Alleluia!

Faith vs. WorksThird message in series:

I. The World in Two Groups

II. Faith or Works?A. Paul: It is faith!(Romans 1:17) For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness

that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

B. James: It is works!(James 2:14-17, 24) What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has

no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. . . . (vs. 24) You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

III. How do we reconcile Paul and James? Paul James Problem being addressed ____________________ ____________________ “Works” ____________________ ____________________ Focus ____________________ ____________________ Purpose ____________________ ____________________

IV. If you err on the side of . . .A. Faith(James 1:26-2:1) If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight

rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans

and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.

B. Works(1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins

and purify us from all unrighteousness.(1 John 3:21-22) Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence

before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.

(1 John 3:1) How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

Worship Notes:Participants: Dr: Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents the third in his sermon series, speaking on “Faith vs. Works” Elliot Smith, our pastor for young adults and the taskforce program, hoststoday’s worship service. Rev. Deb Egloff, the associate pastor for children's ministries at Christ UnitedMethodist Church on Shroyer Road in Kettering, reads today’s Scripture Lesson and presents the Prayers ofthe People. Frederick Chatfield is the Director of Music for Christ United Methodist Church. Jerry Tayloris the Kettering Church’s Minister of Worship and Music.

About the Music: As we gather for worship the choirs begin with a motet for double choir composed byHeinrich Schütz, (1585-1672). Schütz, a German composer and organist, is generally regarded as the mostimportant German composer before Bach. Christ United Methodist Choir then sings their director’ssetting of Frances Havergal’s popular text, and Gil Martin’s anthem,

Gil Martin was the organist/choirmaster at Christ United Methodist when our church was being built.

Introit: is a motet by the German composer, Felix Mendelssohn, for double chorus.

(Hymn No. 2) is a paraphrase of the famous “Canticle to the Sun” bySaint Francis of Assisi, and invites all creation to join in praise and worship. The tune is aGerman hymn from 1623.

is a setting of Psalm 122: 1-2, 6,7 by C. Hubert H. Parry (1848 - 1918). Perry was an Englishinsurance agent and a composer/music teacher at Oxford University.

is heard in a setting by the British composer Gustav Holst, (1874 – 1934) best known for hisorchestral suite . This Psalm is the third “Hallelujah Psalm” and in three stanzas.

is perhaps the most popular of Craig Courtney’s anthems. It wascomposed in 1989 and published here in Dayton. Courtney manages Beckenhorst Music in Columbus, OH.

(Hymn No. 198) is one of the great Methodist hymns by Charles Wesley, composed in 1738and set to the tune, which is the only survivor from “The Bouquet”, published by Thomas Campbell in1825. Sagina is a plant of the pink family that grows in low-lying marshy areas and provides fodder inspringtime for grazing sheep.

is the crowning masterpiece of Ludwig van Beethoven’s oratorio, “Christ On the Mount of Olives.”
