    RBI/ BANKING/ BUSINESS NEWS THIS MONTH Nov 1: Foreign lenders' wholly owned subsidiaries in India will receive near-national treatment, the Reserve Bank of India

    (RBI) assured. The RBI aims to systemically turn foreign banks into wholly-owned subsidiaries.

    Nov 1: The RBI in its Macroeconomic and Monetary Developments Second Quarter Review 2013-14 said that markets in India face domestic uncertainties arsing from prolonged slowdown, falling corporate earnings and rising leverage, besides

    risks of political uncertainties associated with the electoral cycle.

    Nov 1: According to NABARD, Eastern and North Eastern states, which are battling with acute storage deficit, will get a priority in fund allocation for building warehouses.

    Nov 6: RBI permitted the Wholly Owned Subsidiaries of the foreign banks to acquire the domestic private sector banks. RBI also permitted the banks to set up branches anywhere in the country.

    Nov 9: The RBI has allowed third party payment for the export and import transactions. Nov 13: Reserve Bank has said the CAD in 2013-14 will be USD 56 billion-- much lower than the quantum projected

    earlier-- and there is no fundamental reason for rupee depreciation.

    Nov 15: State Bank of India plans to raise tier-II capital in the range of about Rs 5,000 crore before March. Nov 19: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the first branch of Bharatiya Mahila Bank in Mumbai.

    Nov 20: The RBI opened a Rs 5000 crore refinance window for MSME sector, for a period of one year to ease the liquidity. Nov 20: The RBI directed Public Sector Banks to provide loans to women self-help groups (SHGs) at 7 per cent per annum

    to avail the benefit of interest rate subvention scheme under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana-Aajeevika

    (SGSY) scheme. Nov 21: The RBI is planning to reduce banks' requirement of investing in government securities (G-Secs) in a calibrated

    way. This will help to ensure the flow of credit to productive sectors of the economy.

    Nov 23: RBI declared that the dollar swap window would be closed on November 30; however, banks which will get firm commitment from international financial institutions will be able to continue availing the special incentive till December 31,

    2013.

    Nov 24: The Reserve Bank of India said that it will launch CPI-indexed bonds aimed at protecting the savings of retail investors from the impact of price rise by the end of next month.

    Nov 26: RBI widened the definition of infrastructure lending including hotels with project costing more thanRs. 200 crore as well as convention centres with project worth Rs. 300 crore.

    Nov 27: RBI has confirmed its decision to grant self-regulatory status to associations of non-banking financial firms that deal in microfinance.

    Nov 27: Banks might adopt Aadhaar as additional authentication or move to EMV (Euro pay MasterCard Visa) chip and pin technology to ensure security in card-based payment transactions, RBI suggested.

    Nov 27: RBI directed the banks to charge customers for the transaction SMS alerts on the basis of usage, instead of imposing a fixed fee.

    Nov 27: Tata Sons Ltd has withdrawn its application for a new bank licence, according to the Reserve Bank of India. Nov 28: State Bank of Travancore and SBI General Insurance jointly launched an affordable health insurance plan for SBT

    customers.

    Nov 29: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 28 November 2013 relaxed norms for participation of Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) in the insurance joint ventures by allowing them to hold more than 50 percent in such companies.

    Nov 11: Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal launched a cashless health care scheme, Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Beema Yojna, for BPL families, which would provide free medical services of up to Rs 30,000 per annum.

    WORLD ECONOMY THIS MONTH Nov 20: IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, issued a Rs 1,000 crore (approximately $160 million) global Indian

    rupee bond of three years maturity.

    Imp: The maturity date of the bond is December 3, 2016, and it carries a coupon of 7.75 per cent.

    MoUs/ AGREEMENTS SIGNED THIS MONTH Nov 1: India and Vietnam signed a treaty for transfer of sentenced prisoners languishing in jails in the two countries. The

    MoU was signed between Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Vietnam Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang.

    Nov 1: India and Australia held the third round of negotiations to finalise a civil nuclear agreement that could enable the sale of Australian uranium to India, in Delhi during the week beginning November 25.

    Nov 2: India and Cuba signed an MoU for cooperation between Prasar Bharati (PB) and Cuban Radio and Television Institute (ICRT) as part of strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries.

    Nov 5: India and China held a 10-day joint military drill on counterterrorism the first such exercise held between the neighbours in five years.

    Nov 6: US and India have launched the third India-US-Africa triangular agricultural training programme at the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE).

    project.

    Nov 2: Global outrage against recent revelations of mass surveillance by the U.S. government, which sparked discussions for a review of global surveillance guidelines, has led the Brazilian government to reach out to the Indian government for

    support for its proposal to host a one-off global summit, scheduled for early May 2014.

    Imp: The External Affairs Ministry did not confirm if India has decided to support the Brazilian effort. However, if it does, it

    will be at the risk of defending criticism against CMS-related surveillance, while agreeing to attack the Americans on PRISM.

    Nov 2: Russia and Japan held their first joint Defence and Foreign Ministers meeting and agreed to expand their defense and security cooperation.

    Imp: With this agreement, Russia became the third country in the world to establish the two-plus-two mechanism of

    bilateral interaction at the ministerial level with Japan after US and Australia. On the other side, Japan became the first

    Asian country to have the arrangement with Russia.
