The year 2014 is almost forgotten, although it was a successful business year for the SCHÄFER Group. For that we would like to express our thanks to all our customers, suppliers and our staff. Without their contributions, the success we achieved would not have been possible.

2015 starts with the preparation and implementation of a “large-scale project“, the establishment of a new business division for Expanded Metal (see next page). In the other divisions, too, various activities are being undertaken to develop business operation further. With this in mind, we can be optimistic about the future and look forward to the tasks ahead.

As usual, the following pages will provide you with information on what our various divisions will be dealing with in the coming year.

Trade fairs have always enjoyed high priority. This year, we have already been among the exhibitors at the ANUGA FoodTec (Int.Trade Fair for Food and Drink Technology) in Cologne and, in the coming months, will be represented at a number of trade fairs relevant for our particular sectors. So, in this respect, we will be looking forward to meeting you at our stands and discussing new business possibilities.

And finally, we would like to encourage you to let us know what you think. You can do this by sending us an e-mail to [email protected] or simply call your personal contact at any time. Many thanks in advance.

We hope you enjoy reading the magazine, and on behalf of the Schäfer family and all our staff, we would like to wish all the very best for the coming months, with a heartfelt Siegerland “Glück auf!”

New business division

SCHÄFER Expanded Metal

From 1st. May 2015, SCHÄFER WERKE will be taking over part of the expanded metal production from the Bender company from the neighbouring town of Siegen. The goal of SCHÄFER WERKE also supplying expanded metal has been around for a while, as expand-ed metal is, after all, a complimentary product for perforated metal. In future, Bender wants to concentrate on expanded metal machines and micro mesh products for the aviation industry and for that, it needs space. So besides the modern production machinery, the experienced team is also moving to the Neunkirchen Pfannenberg.Establishing this new business division shows clearly that the course at SCHÄFER WERKE con-tinues to be set for growth. The plan is to give production a high vertical range of manufac-ture and to support the experienced produc-tion employees with a highly motivated sales team. Expanded metal is a material with openings in the surface, created by simultaneously slitting and stretching the metal, so that no material is lost. These mesh sheets are made from coils

or cut-to-size blanks, but are not braided or welded. There are many forms of mesh avail-able, but round, square and diamond-shaped have become the most widespread. The material can be found in many differ-ent applications, such as the automobile industry, for instance, or in filters, facades, indoor and outdoor furniture or even as a composite material. Its uses are extremely diverse and by no means already exhausted. Solutions based on expanded metal therefore have their own form of individuality, as they combine a range of positive features, such as their capability to be shaped or welded. The material is fire-resistant, permeable, con-ductive and extremely long lasting, as well as being economical, environmentally friendly and easy on material resources. There is also a 3-D element in this material, making it either transparent or not, depending on its design or how it is positioned. We expect a new range of interesting business possibilities to open up and are convinced that, with our usual high standard of service and quality, we’ll be able to gain customers as

competent partners for our Expanded Metal division in future, too.

Strong partnership with a long tradition

Family enterprises working hand in hand

It’s often the hidden details that are decisive for product quality, long-term customer loyalty and the establishment of a successful brand. So, too, the perfect functionality of good furniture may finally rest on what may appear to be insignificant details, like the stability and intelligent en-gineering of hinges, runners and pull-out systems. The Hettich Group from Kirchlengern pro-vides the proof for this. With over 6,000 employees, Hettich is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of furniture fittings. In 2013, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary. This family enterprise with its rich tradition manufactures drawer systems and runners, sliding door systems, hinges and systems for office furniture and white goods, among other products.

Hettich has worked with the SCHÄFER Group for many years, both as a supplier and as a customer of the EMW Steel Service Centre. In 1987, EMW first delivered cold rolled steel to Hettich as the starting material for drawers. Subsequently, business between the two intensified with the first orders for slit strip for producing ball bearing runners. Thanks to long-standing and reliable part-nerships, like the one with EMW, Hettich is growing in its innovative strength and can constantly offer customers new products and system improvements. This is an important factor for survival in the industry as demands on runners, for instance, are extremely high. Demand for modern self-closing drawer con-cepts as well as noise-reduced or noiseless products is increasing all the time, especially in the household sector.

Hettich carries out long-term stress tests, which only products of the highest material and manufacturing quality can withstand. EMW itself constantly tests the quality of incoming and outgoing materials in its own laboratory, an approach which leads to the best material properties and lowest tolerances. This is something with which EMW has been supporting Hettich in its innovative product design for some 28 years.EMW sees its relationship to Hettich as a partnership and consequently, the Steel Service Centre keeps materials in stock specifically for Hettich.

Perforated sheets from SCHÄFER in Vienna’s showpiece construction project

In October 2014, a new building project was launched in District 22 of the Danube metropolis of Vienna.

Owner of the 218-appartment block is the non-profit making construction company GESIBA, owned by the City

of Vienna. The aim of the project is to provide high-quality living space at affordable prices.

Invitingly translucent, while simulta-neously offering opportunities for privacy – that’s perhaps one way of describing the building’s friendly external appearance, highlighted by the sunshine yellow colour of the facade elements. This pleasant, “airy” impression is in no small way due to these perforated metal elements from SCHÄFER. The project was acquired by SCHÄFER’s Austrian sales representative Intermold and installation was carried out by the List company from Kirchbach, who, in turn, were awarded this contract by Swietelsky, the construction company in charge of the entire project.

The perforated sheets’ positive climatic properties not only support the building’s sophisticated architecture, but also its high ecological standards. Built in compli-ance with Germany’s low energy standard, district heating is being used in the apartments. In addition, there are chemicals inspections by the IBO (Austrian Institute for Healthy and Ecological Building), controlled domestic ventilation with individual heat metering for apartments facing the road, water-saving fittings, solar energy for heating the roof-top swimming pool and sprinklers for watering the gardens.

The L-shaped apartment block with one ground and eight upper floors enables great flexibility. The increased strength of ceilings and non-supporting walls means rooms can be divided or joined together to adapt to tenants’ changing life situations. The outside facilities are designed as a large garden courtyard combining lawns and playing areas and including two further nine-storey blocks, connected to each other via porticoes, stairwells and bridges.

Fresher than ever

For years, Sinalco has relied on SOFT DRINK KEGs from SCHÄFER

Long before American soft drinks had got a foothold over here, Europe’s first lemonade brand was established 110 years ago in Radebeul near Dresden. A merchant and a naturopath created a drink, for which a competition in 1905 found the still illustrious name Sinalco – derived from the Latin “sine alcohole” (without alcohol). Since 1994, this traditional brand has belonged to the Hövelmann Beverage Group. They invested a lot in the relaunch and brought the brand, which had more or less been in hibernation since the1970s, back on the road to success.Sinalco began using the modern KEG system as early as 1996 and, for its relaunch for restaurants and caterers in the year 2000, it ordered its own KEGs from SCHÄFER Container Systems for the first time. The first big joint project was the delivery of SCHÄFER SOFT DRINK KEGS to the Schalke Arena starting in 2001. In 2015, after years of reliable partnership, SCHÄFER will be sup-

plying Sinalco with 44,000 new SOFT DRINK KEGs and taking some 8,000 KEGs in for repairs. In deciding to use the SCHÄFER SOFT DRINK KEG, Sinalco wanted to estab-lish a system to meet all current demands of handling and transponder technology and also one that sets itself apart from other soft drink containers currently on the market in terms of appearance. The KEGs’ PU coating can be printed with individual brand colours and logos – in this case, the Sinalco logo on a yellow background.Besides, these KEGs are suited for use on fully automated filling lines, which wasn’t possible in the past. In the restaurant and catering sector, the KEGs are greatly appreciated as uncomplicated, easy-to-handle containers, which shows the importance of KEGs for Sinalco’s restaurant and catering sales. Comparing the various containers used in the sector, 10.4 and 20.5 litre SOFT DRINK KEGs make up a much larger proportion of sales than the 0.2 or 0.33 litre bottles.

In 2014, Sinalco sales by the glass once again showed a two-figure growth rate. A good 75 % of all drinks from beverage containers used in restaurants and catering is dispensed from KEGs, with the lion’s share of this – 80 % – going to the premix ready-to-serve drinks and the rest to post-mix products. As one competitor has withdrawn from the premix system, Sinalco now has the opportunity to make real inroads into this market with its KEGs. The aim is to offer all landlords and restaurant-owners tailor-made solu-tions for their particular business. There are currently 8 Sinalco products available for sale by the glass. The latest addition is the herbal lemonade “Kräuter Kracherl”, which is now available in KEGs for the Austrian market.

Great Britain adopts the PLUS KEG

Why KEGs from SCHÄFER are changing the beer business

content, also passing on the headache of separating the PU material from the stainless steel material to the thieves. The craft sector believe the outstanding visual aesthetics of the PLUS KEG and its tactile handling characteristics help repre-sent to their customers the quality and care that they have taken in producing a product they take a great pride in brewing. We are now seeing marketing people using the keg decoration as integral to an overall strategy of brand awareness, as our branding is permanent as well as highly visible. So if you are visiting the UK in the near future look out for such brewery names as Mean-time, Camden, Brewdog, Purity, Beavertown, Fivepoints, Eaton and Windsor and try a quality beer dispensed from a PLUS KEG.

www.schaefer-container-systems.com

For generations Great Britain was known universally for its “warm beer” served at room temperature, dispensed using gravity

through a hand pump known as a “beer engine”. This style of beer, so-called “cask conditioned bitter” has been served virtually

unchanged since Charles Dickens’s time.

Being unpasteurized with only natural carbonation and due to the style of cask called a “firkin”, it only allowed the bar owner three days to sell the beer once it was tapped. The beer landscape in GB is now changing dramatically due to a new trend of craft brewers producing a range of quality beers for the keg system. These brewers are growing in number and size year on year emulating the expansion in the US market by the craft sector; in fact many of the brewers now working in the UK learned their skills overseas. At the forefront of this surge in popularity has been SCHÄFER Container Systems supplying its PLUS KEG range in ever increasing numbers. Those breweries starting off buying kegs for the first time have gone on to standardize on the PU (Poly-urethane) coated PLUS KEG.

At Meantime Brewery in Greenwich London, the founder Alastair Hook had experience of the PLUS KEG during his time brewing in Germany and knew the potential of the keg to the emerging craft sector. It has proven to be durable in a market which unloads kegs manually in deep Victorian pub cellars and, due to its PU coating, it reduces noise during handling by over 60 % – ideal for urban areas. Offering outstanding branding opportunities using the colour of the keg itself for brand impact, in London alone we have brewers using black, red and light blue kegs. When com-bined with 10 colour branding around the centre of the keg, it helps to identify the keg instantly on collection. In a market where an estimated Euros 50 million worth of containers are stolen each year for their metal value, the PLUS KEG virtually eliminates this problem, having only 40 % of the steel

Keeping things clear with ion exchangers

Containers for water processing

In many of the sectors SCHÄFER supplies with containers, whether food, chemicals or pharmaceuticals, hygiene and cleanliness play a central role. Companies in these industries often place especially high demands of water quality and therefore use ion exchangers to achieve it. SCHÄFER supplies the basis for this, the ion exchanger cartridges. In appearance, the container produced by SCHÄFER at the Pfannenberg site in Neun-

clarity, therefore, can only be achieved during the manufacturing process. And this is where the ion exchanger comes in. The pro-cess described above enables the window manufacturer to use the filtered water to clean the glass panes thoroughly, leaving no residues or stripes, guaranteeing perfect clarity for the consumer.Ion exchangers are also used in the food industry for the production of sugar or

fructose concentrates. They remove the unwanted salts, dyes and proteins from the raw solutions. In breweries, their main usage is for the processing of water with low carbonate hardness. So, as you can see, SCHÄFER products can be found in everyday uses more frequently that you might have thought.

kirchen, looks similar to a KEG, a beverage container. The interior is designed to enable special ion exchanger material, such as synthetic resin or active carbon to be filled in. This creates an ion exchanger that is used for filtering substances out of drinking water. To be precise, it actually removes undesirable sub- stances, such as lime scale, salt, toxins, etc. from the water. All these substances are dissolved in the water in the form of ions, i.e., atoms with certain electrical charge. The laws of chemistry enable these ions to be removed from the water by adding other ions with the same charge (positive or negative). Ion exchangers can be used wherever calcification or other substances dissolv-ed in water definitely have to be avoided. Heating and solar facilities, for instance, dish washers and coffee machines in large-scale kitchens must be mentioned here, as well as EDM machines and float glass production or products in the semi-conductor industry. And the mouth rinsing water at the dentist’s has also be put through an ion exchanger.

A practical example:In the production of multi-pane insulating glass for windows, for example, panes of glass are bonded together as single elements, sealed air tight and thermally insulated. Later, only the external panes can be cleaned as the others are no longer accessible. Complete

Ideal solutions for all needs

SCHÄFER Container Systemsat the Anuga FoodTec

From 24th. to 27th. of March, SCHÄFER Container Systems also exhibited its stainless steel packaging solutions in hall 7.1, stand E 030. Besides the classical IBCs (intermedi-ate bulk containers), the interest of this year’s visitors was captured by customized heatable container solutions, aseptic containers for sterile applications and ion exchangers. With its many standard and customized solutions in stainless steel, SCHÄFER can supply the industry with almost the entire spectrum of reusable beverage and food containers.

The Anuga FoodTec, which takes place every 3 years in Cologne, is seen as an important source of new impulses for manufacturers

and suppliers in the food and beverage industries. This year, the fair broke previous attendance records with over 45,000 visitors, and

the 1,500 exhibitors highlighted the upbeat, positive 2015 mood over the four days.

The walking data centre

SCHÄFER IT-Systems develops a mobile server rack

In 2014, around 1,500 employees of the technology company Thales Deutsch-land moved into the new head office in Ditzingen near Stuttgart. Since then, the staff in the Thales divisions, rail control and safety, air traffic management and airspace surveillance, aerospace, as well as security and defence have been working at the new technology campus, along with those from central departments, such as finance, HR, purchasing, sales, law and communications. The data centre that serves Ditzingen, as

well as other Thales locations in Germany, also had to be moved and set up in the new building. From the beginning, it was clear that, to finish this project, there would only be a very short time available between the building’s completion and the move into the new offices. Intensive preparations had to be made early, so initial talks between Thales and SCHÄFER IT-Systems began 18 months in advance. And with good reason: the punctual delivery and installation of the five cold-aisle enclosures and 86 server

racks by SCHÄFER IT-Systems was the pre-condition for servers and switches also being installed on time. Besides the ambitious time frame, there was another reason for the project’s long preparation period. Thales Deutschland wanted a custom-made product for the data centre: racks on rollers. The background is that much of the engineering work that Thales Deutschland actually does frequently requires special development environments, rather than standard equipment.

Data centres are becoming increasingly complex. SCHÄFER IT-Systems has set itself the aim of increasing investment in its solution business, so it can offer its customers all the products and services they need from a single source. Therefore, 2015 is the year of the great product and service offensive. For the generation and single-minded implementation of creative ideas, SCHÄFER began holding regular innovation meetings in February 2015. At these meetings, product management, design, sales and sometimes some of SCHÄFER’s cooperation partners come together to discuss one particular issue – ranging from technical subjects, like cable management, cooling and monitoring, to organisational matters, like service or production sequences. The results are summarised, analysed and evaluated. This will lead to product improvements and extensions being achieved much faster than they have been up to now.

Innovation meetings for constant process optimisation

As a result, SCHÄFER developed and imple-mented a feature, together with Thales, that was extremely important for the customer: individual racks can now be taken out of the cold-aisle unit and re-equipped and tested in the laboratory. This newly pre-configured system can then be re-incorporated into the data centre. But, while this is happening, doesn’t that mean there’s suddenly a huge gap in the enclosure, which will disrupt the vital separation of cold and warm air? Not in this case, because SCHÄFER IT-Systems has designed a special rack that can be positioned easily in the gap and works as a kind of “air stopper” to seal the cold-aisle enclosure. For the SCHÄFER designers, it was the first time they had developed a solution involving the exchange of operating racks – but hardly the first customer-specific solution. In fact, the company’s core competence in being able to supply such “made-to-measure” products was a decisive factor for Thales Deutschland to award SCHÄFER IT-Systems the contract. In Thales’ view, SCHÄFER combines the benefits of standardised component systems

with the flexibility of being able to in- corporate individual customer-specific solutions as well. For SCHÄFER IT-Systems, this was also a premiere in another respect: it was the first time, such an extensive customer project was realised solely with the new IS-1 racks. This server cabinet layout has been the basis for the company’s component system since 2014. Accessories like the AirTube Switch, for guiding air flows, which are also in operation at Thales Deutschland in a slightly modified form, are geared to the IS-1.The fact that any project not supplied as a purely “off-the-peg” solution sometimes requires modification goes without saying. The project’s success was characterised greatly by the short pathways at SCHÄFER IT-Systems between sales and design.Thales stated that they found the supplier’s flexibility and customer orientation to be very good and consequently there were definite plans to work together again on projects in the future.

The community of Wildpoldsried near Kempten in Germany’s Allgäu region self-confidently call themselves “the energy village”. And rightly so, for there can hardly be another place in Germany where the density of private, commercial and public activities in the field of renewable energy is as high as it is here. The company Sonnenbatterie GmbH has been making its own contribution since 2011. At that time, it launched its first solar battery onto the market. Further models fol-lowed and finally, in 2014, came eco, the fourth product generation. The solar battery enables operators of photovoltaic systems to use as much self-generated electricity as possible and minimise the amount they have to buy from the energy companies. With this, the solar battery solves one typical photovoltaic problem. Most power is needed in the mornings or evenings, at times when the sun either hasn’t risen or hardly shines at all. By means of storage and intelligent energy management, the Sonnenbatterie system enables households or businesses to use as much solar power from PV systems as possible.

This combination of functions provides users with the opportunity to cover up to 90 % of their energy needs with self-generated electricity. Meanwhile, Sonnenbatterie GmbH is Germany’s market leader for intelligent lithium storage systems. Thanks to techno- logical advances and the enormous market potential, the company has now brought a new generation of eco solar batteries onto the market for 2015.With up to 10,000 charging cycles, their service lives are considerably higher than those of the previous generation, which also makes the batteries much more economical. The key to a really long battery life, however, lies in how well it can be protected from damage. That’s why Sonnenbatterie GmbH attaches great importance to accommodating its technology in robustly constructed cabinets made of high-quality materials. With a cabinet design specially developed for the new eco solar battery, the housing specialists from SCHÄFER in Betzdorf were really able to convince the energy experts from the Allgäu.

Almost everyone has probably seen the CWS logo in a washroom at some time or other – when taking a paper towel out of the dispenser to dry your hands, for instance. Besides textile services, washroom hygiene products also belong to the CWS-boco group. What both divisions have in common is that, in each case, it involves a rental service – usually dealing with textiles, that ranges from dust control mats in building entrances to clothing for clean rooms in pharmaceutical and chemical laboratories. In textile services, CWS-boco offers workers a rental agreement for occupational clothing, in which washing, collecting, replacing and delivering the working clothes is all part of the service. For customers, this saves purchasing and personnel costs, space, as they don’t need their own washing machines, and time they can devote to their actual tasks. Among the target sectors are not only industry, trades

In general, CWS-boco’s customer relations tend to be very longstanding. That’s why CWS-boco sets great store by very good material quality and workmanship, and not only for its clothing but also for its drop-off cabinets, which should be robust enough for sustainable use. When CWS-boco was looking for a new cabinet solution in 2014, they discovered all their high quality standards were met by SCHÄFER Interior Solutions. And on top of this, SCHÄFER was able to present a very convincing customer-specific cabinet design and short delivery times. That‘s why CWS-boco now purchases its drop-off cabinets from Betzdorf – and enjoys a very professional service.

and the entire motor mechanic sector, care facilities, services and catering, but also any other sector for which uniform professional clothing is required, like security services, for instance. The leasing model revolves around the so-called drop-off cabinet. This is where employees deposit their used clothing at the end of their working day, and where the CWS-boco driver picks them up to take them to the laundry. And it’s the same cabinet where he deposits a clean set of clothes. They can then be picked up by the staff when they come to work the next day, and each individual wearer is allocated their own personal set of clothing. So that CWS-boco can clearly allocate the correct clothes to the correct employee, all items of clothing are fitted with a memory chip containing the number of both the individual company and the wearer.

Health drive at SCHÄFER

Company’s health management supports staff

To help support the well-being of staff actively, SCHÄFER WERKE have introduced a general health drive, within the framework of the company’s health management policy. To what extent SCHÄFER employees take advantage of this is something they will have to decide for themselves. In cooperation with the AOK health insurance, the project was launched in 2014, with its main focus on dealing with back pain. A screening programme carried out at the company in a so-called “health bus”, provided information on each individual’s coordination abilities and served as a basis for health counselling with a recommended programme of training. To offer sustained support, there will be a series of talks held on this topic in the coming months with recommendations for health improvement, and a number of practical workshops demonstrating specific exercises. For the future, SCHÄFER is planning to focus on other topics, so they will be able to offer their employees specific, supportive measures to improve their own health individually.

Increasing challenges in the workplace and risk factors like lack of movement and inner tension and stress.

These are only some of the things proven to have negative effects on our health.

Safety has top priority

Protection and safety of employees takes top priority at SCHÄFER. To comply with German laws on health and safety at work and the modifications and improvements of regulations by the European Union, SCHÄFER WERKE have been working closely with the AMZ – the Siegerland Occupational Medicine Centre e.V. – and its safety service since June 1st. 2014. The AMZ offers advice and support on all aspects of the law on health and safety at work (“Arbeitssicherheitsgesetz” – ASiG) such as the organisation of work-places to benefit work and health, the acquisition of machines and equipment,

Cooperation with the “Arbeitsmedizinisches Zentrum Siegerland e.V.” (Siegerland Occupational Medicine Centre)

the implementation of legal require-ments and many other topics relating to health and safety at work. Risk assessments also help in recognising and minimising potential dangers, as well as checking the safety of planned measures at an early stage. Carrying out regular measurements for noise, lighting intensity, climatic conditions and hazardous substances are also among the services the Centre offers. This enables working conditions relevant to safety and health to be regularly analysed and constantly optimised for the good of our employees.
