I love putting together our annual swimsuit issue. When we did our first swimsuit issue in 2007 we made a point to photograph outstanding athletes who were making a difference just by being who they really were. And I am proud to say the same holds true

for our ninth annual swimsuit issue.This year’s participants are truly outstanding individuals as you

will see from their photos both in swimsuits and in their athletic gear. West Hollywood Dodgeball sent two of their own dodgeball greats to the photo shoot, Chris and Allan. Besides dodgeball, Chris played soccer growing up and Allan wrestled and played baseball. As sports lovers, they joined WeHo Dodgeball early in the league’s formation.

Arizona was also well represented by two amazing athletes. Trent is a triathlete and runner who is a member of the Phoenix Frontrunners while Baylen runs with the Frontrunners and also plays for the Arizona Gay Volleyball Association.

All our athletes shine on their respective fields, courts, tracks, etc. In fact, this year we decided to include pictures of the swimsuit participants in both their active wear and swimsuits. This is something we may make a part of future swimsuit issues.

As always, it takes many talented people to produce a photoshoot of this caliber and we want to extend our deepest appreciation to our photographer Leland Gebhardt and our stylists from TUC Shops.

We are very proud to work with so many amazing organizations that include professional athletes, amateur athletes and weekend warriors in their membership. They are changing the face of the old homophobic atmosphere in sports to one of diversity that’s welcoming to all. And we are already looking forward to making an even bigger splash with next year’s 10th Anniversary Swimsuit Issue.

We’re now officially into the spring season, meaning it’s time for our ninth annual swimsuit issue. This year is part of a return to our original idea of honoring

real athletes—gay or straight —who love sports and are participants in changing the face of sports into a more open, accepting culture simply through their love of whatever game they play.

We got so many positive comments on last year’s use of regular athletes that we decided to use regular ath-letes in this year’s photoshoot as well. Now this isn’t say-ing that our readers don’t appreciate looking at perfectly chiseled swimsuit models; they’re just happy to see bod-ies that look more like theirs. So if you haven’t gotten your body into swimsuit shape yet, it’s time to start!

In addition to the swimsuit eye candy there are sto-ries on the Phoenix Frontrunners 17th Annual Pride Run & Walk and a fun night-time fluorescent cycling event in Palm Springs—their bi-annual Cycledelic Festival & Ride that promotes bike safety. It’s also a free event and while supplies last, bike lights and glow in the dark dec-orations will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. And if you missed the rodeo in Arizona, fear not. We’ve got rodeo action in Las Vegas so get your cowboy/cowgirl on and mosey on over to Vegas.

ACTIVE IN LOCAL POLITICS AND HIV/AIDS healthcare, Brett has served in many leadership and committee roles. Brett co-founded the Coachella Valley Bicycle Coalition and chairs the City of Palm Springs committee on Active Transportation. Brett is also the current president of Dining Out For Life International Association. The last Thursday in April the organization stages its annual “Dine Out, Fight AIDS” event in over 53 cities. In 2015 these events will collectively raise more than $4 million for HIV/AIDS services.

Brett is a marketing, special event and fundraising development specialist. For more than 30 years he has worked beside business and community leaders, volunteers and service groups. Understanding the importance of team-building, he works in partnership with many local LGBT groups and volunteers to promote and encourage wellness and exercise. Brett is a leader in the region’s Active Transportation activities and initiatives, specifically biking and walking for a healthier community.

Over the years, Brett has played LGBT competitive beach and indoor volleyball with the North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA) across the nation and is now actively focused on cycling. Having completed multiple California AIDS rides and volunteered with AIDS LifeCycle fundraising events and training rides, cycling is foremost in Brett’s mind these days—if he can’t be out riding his bike then helping to craft the future of biking efforts in the desert is what matters most. Brett lives in Palm Springs with his lifelong partner Sean and their two beautiful dappled Dachshund boys.

AS A PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE PHOENIX area community, Stacy has worked hard to create a warm, friendly and inclusive gathering place that makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable. As the owner of Stacy’s @ Melrose, he has contributed a significant amount of time, energy and money to the community he serves.

A gold medal billiards player, Stacy has participated in four Gay Games since 2002. In 2014 he was a medal winner again at Gay Games 9 held in the Ohio areas of Cleveland and Akron. More than an avid billiards player, however, he is truly committed to making Phoenix a bet-ter place for everyone – including the LGBT community.

Through hard work and determination, Stacy strongly supports many local sports leagues and teams, including the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL), Cactus Cities Softball League (CCSL), Phoenix Unified Gay Bowling Alliance (PUGBA) and many others.

Stacy’s @ Melrose has held fundraising events for many area nonprofit organizations, including one n ten and Joshua Tree Feeding Program as well as an array of other important charities.

Whether he is hosting a cocktail party for former NFL athlete Esera Tuaolo, airing national sports tournaments on his flat screen TVs or welcoming newly arrived Phoenicians to the Melrose District, Stacy Louis is known for making everyone feel welcome at his place.

GAY GAMES 9 LEAVES A POSITIVE LEGACY

NOW THAT THE VARIOUS sports competitions and cultural events of Gay Games 9 are fond memories for its participants,

spectators and community members, the organizers have announced that this was the most financially successful Games in the organization’s 32-year history.

As the largest world-class inclusive sporting and cultural event held every four years, the Gay Games gives athletes from across the globe the opportunity to come together under its founding principles of “Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best.” Held during August 2014 in the northeastern Ohio areas of Cleveland and Akron, the next Games will be held in Paris in 2018.

According to the Cleveland Founda-tion, lead sponsor of the Gay Games, here is a numbers breakdown of the recent event:

Gay Games LGBT Legacy Fund at the Cleveland Foundation to continue efforts for a more inclusive and diverse community in Ohio’s northeast community.

Thomas Nobbe, executive director of Gay Games 9 said at a recent forum on the lessons and legacies of the Games that another $27,000 will go toward boosting the Gay Community Endowment Fund of the Akron Com-munity Foundation.

Nobbe gave credit to generous corporate sponsors for the economic success of games and also praised event organizers who were committed to

leaving the Cleveland and Akron areas with a gift that will help to continue the Games’ legacy. He also noted that the board leadership of Gay Games 9 placed importance on operating in a fiscally responsible manner, saying that the “event planners learned from previous games, which offered elaborate—but very expensive—opening ceremonies. We were advised not to go overboard,” he said.

The Opening Ceremonies in Cleveland saw a huge rainbow flag rolled out while thousands of athletes from over 50 countries and representa-tives from across the United States proudly marched to officially start Gay Games 9. Presenters and performances included Greg Louganis, Lance Bass and the Pointer Sisters and also included chorale groups and the Gay Games Team Marching Band as part of the week-long celebration.

ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY ADDING MORE SAFETY BARRIERS

FOLLOWING KYLE BUSCH’S accident during the recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Daytona International

Speedway (DIS), Atlanta Motor Speedway and NASCAR officials reviewed existing SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barriers and other walls at the track and decided to add a total of 130 linear feet of extra protective barrier.

Busch sustained a compound fracture in his lower right leg and a mid-foot break in his left foot, the result of a multi-car wreck that caused hisNo. 54 Toyota to strike a concrete wall at nearly full speed. Joie Chitwood III, DIS president vowed to add SAFER barriers to “every inch” of the DIS facility.

Meanwhile, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing develop-ment officer Steve O’Donnell took responsibility for the accident, telling FOX Sports “As promised, we expedited a review of potential safety advance-

ment at each of our racing venues.” He continued to say that “We’re pleased with the additional safety enhance-ments Atlanta Motor Speedway will be making leading into our events this weekend. As we’ve stated, NASCAR and its track partners remain steadfastly committed to safety.”

According to multiple reports in addition to Atlanta and Daytona, more SAFER barriers are also being added to Talladega, Superspeedway and Kentucky Speedway.

SPRING TRAINING INCLUDES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EDUCATION

SPRING TRAINING INCLUDES some new training this year for all major league base-ball players on 40-man ros-

ters according to an Associated Press report. This is being coordinated by Futures Without Violence, a San Fran-cisco-based organization in agreement with the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Following the bad press received by the NFL’s handling of domestic vio-lence issues of several of their players, the report indicated that MBL officials started meetings with groups to work on an effective policy to address how baseball would handle the problem.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said that “… we’re not going to settle for something less than that.” Manfred also said that he was hopeful an agree-ment would be reached before open-ing day, saying he’d be “disappointed if we were not able to come to an agree-ment.” Opening day for the 2015 season is Sunday, April 5.

While the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) doesn’t define disci-pline for players charged with “phys-ical force or violence, including but not limited to, sexual assault, domes-tic violence, resisting arrest, battery and assault,” it does permit for punishment to be imposed by the commissioner or the player’s team. A clause of the CBA also provides for players to get treat-ment for alcohol-related and off-field violent offenses.

PHOENIX FRONTRUNNERS HOLDING 17TH ANNUAL PRIDE RUN & WALKBY DAN SHABRA

PHOENIX FRONTRUNNERS, INC. (PHXFR) announced its 17th annual Pride Run & Walk which will occur on Saturday morning April 11, 2015 in central Phoenix, Arizona over Pride weekend. For those who are so inclined, there is an option for participating in a Friday night pre-race dinner party at downtown’s historic “ICEHOUSE—Phoenix.”

PHXFR is again stepping up its game in 2015 with the introduction of new professionally-timed USATF-certified courses supporting five events, including a half marathon, half marathon relay, a 10K run, 5K run and 5K walk. In addition, there is a noncertified, chip-timed 3K walk.

“This is going to be another exciting year for us,” said Kurt Gross, president of the board of directors for PHXFR. “We’re expanding our offerings again this year so everyone at all fitness levels can find his or her unique experience built on a foundation of quality and professionalism.”

To coincide with the individual run and walk options, PHXFR is introducing “Team Challenge” this year where you are able to participate as a team. They are introducing a half marathon two-person relay option, too. In addition to the run and walk options, there will be entertainment and an Adventure Expo that is open to the public whether participating in a run or walk event or not. So it’s a great way to bring a cheerleading squad that won’t get bored while you’re running or walking. It seems that PHXFR is very serious about producing an elite running and walking experience in the industry.

In addition to the more standard expectations like tech shirts, swag and refreshments, the organization has upped the ante, including more unusual perks like finishers’ medals and chip-timing in all events, including

their walks. Also being introduced are pacers for the half marathon to help runners pace themselves relative to their completion goals and hopefully, help them accomplish a new PR (personal record).

More importantly, at its core the organization is staying true to running and walking. PHXFR has designed courses taking advantage of central Phoenix city streets, all of which have been mapped to be flat, fast and interesting.

As a nonprofit running and walking organization, PHXFR is focused on community health and education. And while it is LGBT-identified, a main reason it produces

its Pride Run & Walk event over Pride weekend, this event should not be considered a “gay

only” event. “We have people from all walks of life participating in our events

and for many different reasons,” said Dan Shabra, vice president and treasurer of the board of directors for PHXFR.

“You’re right,” said Gross. “When someone chooses to run or walk in our Pride Run & Walk, we want it

to be because it’s a great event that is fun for everyone. And we

are very proud to bring this amazing sporting event to Phoenix that also focuses on equality and inclusion and promotes acceptance

and diversity for everyone.” PHXFR was recently honored

with an award from Compete magazine at its 2015 Compete Sports

THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS’ Office of Sustainability in cooperation with the Palm Springs Bike Coalition, Hot Purple Energy and Hocker Productions will present Cycle-delic. This colorful, fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark bike ride and vendor festival will take place Thursday, April 30, coinciding with the weekly Villagefest in downtown Palm Springs—all part of the non-motorized transportation ini-tiative to encourage more bike riding.

Cycledelic is a FREE, fun and easy downtown loop bike ride suitable for all ages. All bike riders are required to wear helmets and obey all traffic laws, signage and routes for Cycledelic. Bike riders will gather at the festival area located at the Northwest corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way situated between Palm Canyon Drive and Belardo Road startingat6:00p.m.PilatesPluswillhoststretchingandfree spinning classes onsite to get warmed up for the ride. Big Wheel Tours will offer bike rentals and PS Cyclery will offer bike valet service.

While supplies last, bike lights and glow in the dark decorations will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. A short instruction seminar will be given at approx-imately 7:15 p.m. focusing on bike safety, tips to navigate vehicle traffic, locking your bike and what gear should be worn for nighttime riding.

Cycledelic would not be possible without the sup-port of City of Palm Springs Office of Sustainability, Vil-lagefest, Hot Purple Energy, Palm Springs Cyclery, Pilates Plus and Chandler Coldwell. Riders will ride over the Richard M. Milanovich Memorial Bridge and continue on Belardo until they reach the curve just before it inter-sects with South Palm Canyon Drive, doing two loops to complete the seven-mile fun ride. BIGHORN RODEO COMING TO LAS VEGAS IN MAYBY IAN COLGATE

Q. What organization was formed in Las Vegas in February 1992 by a handful of country-western fans?

A. If you answered the Nevada Gay Rodeo Association (NGRA), you answered correctly.

What started as a small southern Nevada-area group quickly turned into a state-wide rodeo association that now boasts over 125 active members. An affiliate of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA), NGRA pro-duces the annual BigHorn Rodeo, one of the largest rodeos in IGRA’s rodeo circuit.

This year’s BigHorn Rodeo will be held at Horseman’s Park in Las Vegas on May 9 & 10 with official events begin-ningonMay6th.Inadditiontotraditionalrodeoeventsthere will be Pride Family Bingo, BigHorn Rodeo Pool Party, Two Chicks 4 D Barrel Race, Homorodeo.com Meet-N-Greet and the BigHorn Rodeo 2015 Awards Ceremony. Host hotel for the event is the non-gaming Alexis Park – All Suite Resort which is located directly across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel.

For those who have only experienced the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas Strip, a rodeo may seem like an anachronism—an event that feels like it’s out of time and space. But Nevada has a rich gay rodeo history. The firstgayrodeowasproducedinRenoin1976,manyyearsbefore NGRA’s formation. Although it took the new group twoyearstoholdarodeo,since1996NGRAhasproduced17 of them.

Using theCOLOR Wheel

Many people stick to wearing neutral colors because they have no idea how to coordinate

colors. For some people, wearing all black can be flattering and sophisti-cated but it can become boring and tired. A nicely colored accessory can bring your solid black style choice to life. If you wonder how to put colors together to create a flattering outfit, the good news is that it is something you can easily learn by using a color wheel and a few other concepts.

Do you remember learning the basics of the color wheel in grade school or art class? It begins with the three primary colors—red, blue and yellow. These colors go very well with each other and are commonly used in company logos and team colors.

Next are the secondary colors—orange, violet and green. They are produced by mixing together two pri-mary colors. Finally there are the ter-tiary colors—purple, red-orange and yellow-green. These are produced by mixing together a primary and a sec-ondary color.

Once you understand this it becomes easier to apply the next part using the color wheel. We’ll begin with complementary colors since this will be often used. Com-plementary colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel and yes,

they complement each other. Exam-ples are purple and yellow, orange and blue, and red and green.

Another interesting fact is that mixing two complementary colors produces brown, a neutral color. But oddly enough, silver and grey can have varying levels of blue pigments. Analogous colors are neighboring colors, like red, pink and orange or blue and violet.

The last thing to know is which colors are warm and which are cool. The warm scale has colors of red,

orange and yellow shades and the cool scale has green, blue and vio-let shades.

Take this information and have fun putting colors together and mak-ing your wardrobe or home more interesting. Don’t be afraid to play with different color combos and even break the rules every now and then. Also, note that neutral col-ors like brown, grey, black and white go with pretty much anything. But like anything in life, there are always exceptions.

WITH A VIBRANT DOWNTOWN FULL OF TRENDY restaurants and shops, majestic mountains as your backdrop, vistas galore and miles of waterfront, Seattle is an ideal vacation spot. OK, maybe it is a bit overcast and drizzles too often, but it is a beautiful and modern city.

The downtown is constantly changing with new hotels, condos and apartments replacing older buildings. To see some of Seattle’s historic past, you’ll need to visit its neighborhoods such as the area surrounding Kerry Park in the Queen Ann Hill neighborhood. There you’ll find its Victorian homes and some of the most iconic panoramic photos of downtown including the Space Needle and Mount Rainer (on one of those few clear days).

Seattle is a friendly city. People are approachable and willing to help if you need directions or suggestions. It trends toward a younger age and embraces the avant-garde. Since it is built into the mountains, it requires lots of vertical walking and an active lifestyle.

Stay downtown if you are looking for action, food and fun. But don’t look for a good mass transit system. There is one light rail from the airport to downtown. One monorail with one stop. A streetcar which goes only a few blocks, and a confusing bunch of separate bus lines. Walking or a cab is the best way to get around. Seattle has a strong and active gay center in the Capital Hill area with several gay bars and cafes.

There is a wide variety of hotels from luxury five star properties down to very clean and affordable hotels—something for every budget. Foodies will appreciate that Seattle was ranked #8 in the “Best Food Cities” by Condé Nast. You don’t have to spend top dollar to get incred-ible food. Some of the best restaurants are located in its neighborhoods, offering affordable and delicious meals. With over 200 local breweries, Seattle is also a top destina-tion for craft beer lovers.

If you aren’t familiar with Seattle, one of the best ways to get to know it is a ride on the “Ducks,” which are amphibious vehicles. While you’ll see them in other cities, here they have become a local institution. As you board the Ducks, you might feel a bit foolish and awkward. But the drivers are showmen and know the city inside and out. While you learn the history of Seattle and see its iconic landmarks, you can’t help but get caught up in the moment as your Duck travels downtown blaring its music with the locals waving and dancing on the street as you

pass by. Even the toughest curmudgeons will break into a smile—it’s so infectious. After touring the city, you launch into Lake Union for a breathtaking view of the city from a completely different perspective. The once individual towering buildings you looked up to while in town, blend into a perfect postcard of the city with the mountain background.

After the Ducks tour, spend time in the Seattle Center, a74-acreparkbuiltforthe1962World’sFair.Ofcourseitsmost famous feature is the iconic Space Needle; below the observation platform is a rotating restaurant. In the park you’ll find several worthwhile museums, performance venues, plus the park is great for relaxing or people watching.

Seattle and Tacoma are glassblowing hubs. The Seattle Glassblowing Studio (SGS) is located downtown and offers a glimpse into the art of glassblowing. You can watch master craftsmen create unique gorgeous masterpieces, or take a class where you’ll learn how to mix colors and shape glass. After you’ve learned glassblowing, visit the Chihuly gallery and gardens next to the Space Needle to see his incredible glass creations.

Any visit to Seattle must include a stop at Pike Market Place downtown, a marketplace where you can watch them throw and catch fresh fish to entertain customers, find locally grown fruits and vegetables, choose from several booths of fresh flowers, or select from a variety of locally produced gourmet food products.

Finally, Seattle is the starting point for many Alaska cruises where you can see up close the pristine beauty of the Pacific Northwest. If you haven’t taken a cruise to Juneau and seen the Mendenhall Glacier, the salmon run, or whales breaching the surface, an Alaskan cruise is something you must experience.
