Compass offer two tools for implementing Web Map Viewers - one based on an Esri/Microsoft Silverlight framework and the other using well supported open source toolsets.

Example applicationsSustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has a function-rich Bioenergy Mapping System intranet tool, developed with the Compass Open Source Map Viewer,

used to inform planning and strategic decisions at national and local levels regarding development of bioenergy.

Pobal is a charitable company managing programmes for the Irish Government and the EU as an intermediary to support communities

and local agencies in achieving social inclusion, reconciliation and equality. Pobal Maps was developed using the Compass Esri/Silverlight Map Viewer to help disseminate various information to its many stakeholders.

Web Map Viewers are used to present spatial data in cartographic (map) form, via the user’s own internet browser, typically providing some basic spatial information manipulation capabilities.

a Compass server, a client server, or our cloud server. The viewing application runs via the user’s browser. The Viewer front end is based on three standard open source toolsets that are supported by active development communities:

The Viewer backend uses MapServer for the server component, allowing map images to be created, and the powerful, high-level programming language Python.

Compass proprietary map viewerMicrosoft Silverlight provides a cross-browser, cross-platform development environment for delivering engaging,

interactive services for the Web and mobile applications. Silverlight is a free plug-in, powered by the .NET framework that is compatible with most Web browsers, devices and operating systems.

The Compass proprietary Map Viewer is based on the Esri ArcGIS API for Silverlight. This software allow for integration of ArcGIS Server, along with Google, Bing, Open Street Map data in a Silverlight application. Developers create interactive and expressive applications incorporating ArcGIS Server and data resources, e.g. maps, locators, and geoprocessing models, plus Silverlight components, such as grids, tree views, and charts.

Among the many features of the Compass MapView solution is the ability to confi gure it without recourse to IT developers; and the ability to add in really useful modules such as reporting, user authentication, and others in on-going design and development.

The Compass approachWeb Map Viewers are offered by many software companies and open source groups. Compass, however, becomes much more involved with clients in providing Web Map Viewing applications. We work closely with the client and their specifi c data and viewing requirements, importing and often cleaning data, ensuring that symbols displayed on the map are appropriate, and confi guring a fully customised web viewing experience to display the data. Compass can also host the server-side software, if requested to do so by the client.

Future developments

The underlying programming components for the Compass Web Map Viewers undergo periodic updates. Ongoing development of the Web Map Viewers takes such changes into account, as new versions are released. We have a long term commitment to research and development, and to our clients.

Compass Biodiversity Information System is a comprehensive data management and mapping system to store, manage and present biological records – records of animal, plant or any other species. The data stored in databases and presented via the Web Map Viewer is used by planners, researchers, government and non-governmental organisations alike to support evidence based assessment of biodiversity.

The Irish Heritage Council Heritage Map Viewer provides information on a wide range of heritage-related features, including geology, natural habitats and species, cultural artefacts (e.g. museum fi nds, shipwrecks, archaeological excavations), various protected sites, special landscapes, amenities, coastal and marine infrastructure, etc. The map can be manipulated using all the standard functions of the Compass Map Viewer, for ease of use in discovering the cultural heritage of Ireland.
