he modern design of homes has allowed for the introduction of a whole new array of furniture. The different layouts of homes call for varying appropriate furnishings to adorn the home. One

very fun and interesting design move that homes are making more and more frequently is implementing an island into the middle of a kitchen. For ages people have often gathered in the kitchen during times of celebration whether it is a family Christmas party or a friend’s birthday, everyone somehow makes their way into the kitchen to congregate. With a large enough kitchen, having an island in the middle facilitates this kind of meeting even better. The implementation of the island also calls for the use of appropriate seating for this design. Bar stools are the perfect fit for this kind of kitchen layout.

The wonderful thing about stools is that they take up less space than chairs and indicate a much less formal setting that allows for more people to join in. Another quality of stools that makes them the perfect addition to a kitchen island is that they can adjust to the height of the counter. They allow people to sit higher with all the comfort of a normal chair. Bar stools are appropriate for more than just kitchen islands. Some kitchens also have the design of a serving window type layout that allows people to sit at a counter while looking into the kitchen. This style of kitchen provides a less formal dining situation than a traditional dining room set up.

The rise in popularity of these kinds of kitchen designs has lead to a dramatic increase in the types of stools that are available for purchase. The choices are no longer limited to bar room style stools without a back that start to get uncomfortable quite quickly. Now

there are stools that have both high and low backs, offering varying degrees of support and comfort. Along with backs, there are bar stools that have adjustable heights. Being able to set the correct height for a stool means it has increased versatility and can be used in other areas of the house beyond just the kitchen.

Another popular addition for many homes is having an outdoor bar. This is perfect for outdoor entertaining whether it is a backyard barbeque or cocktail party, having an outdoor bar allows everyone to bring the fun outside. There are also all weather bar stools that can join the fun, providing people with a place to sit while continuing to socialize. That is one of the great things about stools is that it allows a person to sit down without sinking to a level far below everyone else, thereby removing them from the conversation.

Whether indoors or out, stools are a wonderful, modern addition to any home. They provide a unique touch of style along with function and convenience. People can custom design their stools or select from the wide variety to see what suits their needs best. Whatever the occasion, bar stools are always the ap-propriate and stylish choice of decor.

When it comes to color, many homeowners have a terrible time deciding whether or not a color they absolutely love with will look good in their home. You may also wonder if certain colors in a cushion or throw will fit into the whole scheme of things. To determine whether colors will work for you, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

When deciding on what colors you love, start by taking a look at your wardrobe. Think about what colors you wear most of the time? Are there any colors that stand out as your absolute favorites? Chances are, these are the colors that you’ll be the happiest with. Even if you pick a neutral color for most of your home, you can still inject those great reds, oranges or other “wardrobe” colors you love without overpowering the space. The great thing about painting only a few walls (or rooms) with strong colors is that they can easily be re-painted when they become a bit tiresome (as we all know our tastes change over the years).

Once you have an idea what colors you like, visit some local paint stores and look for colors in that range. Pick several paint chips that appeal to you and take them home before buying any paint. The color on the paint chip will change when you take it home because of the different lighting conditions. You’ll also want to check the color in different rooms and at different times of the day (morning vs. evening light).

Once you’ve narrowed your selection down, you may want to put together a “sample” board to give you a realistic idea of how your room will look when completed. Foam core is probably the best type of board to use for the project. If you paint the foam core board your main wall color, it will give you a

good sense of how the room will feel (with respect to color) when you hold it up to the wall. Samples of your sofa fabric, wood tones (furniture) can be added to the board so that you have an idea how all your items will look together. Don’t rush the process - live with the sample board for a few weeks before making your final decision. Check the board at various times of day to ensure that you still like the color as it changes throughout the day.

It’s important to take your time when making the final decision on the color selections for your home. Mistakes can prove to be costly if you need to re-paint your entire home because of some bad color choices. Living with a sample color board for a while will prepare you for an outcome you’ll be sure to be happy with.

1. The Living RoomMake sure the art piece is visible to people sitting in the living room. If possible, have the sofa set arranged to face the art piece such that each person seated will have a good view of it. A good place to hang the art could be above the fireplace. One large art piece hanging above the fireplace would really make a statement and draw attention. If you want your art piece to be the focal point of the whole room, place it in a strategic location where visitors will be able to see it first thing when they step into the room. If there is a wall directly facing the front entrance of your home, hanging a large art piece or tapestry there would really catch your visitor’s attention.

If the sofa is placed against a wall, hanging art pieces on that wall is also fine, but note that you should hang it high enough such that a person seated on the sofa and leaning his head against the wall will not come in contact with the art piece and dislodge it. Try using several different art pieces and group them cleverly to add a more balanced effect. The size of the art pieces should be chosen based on the size of the sitting area and the distance between the viewer’s eyes and the art. If the living area is small and the viewers are within close proximity of the art piece, you can choose pieces which are smaller in size but contain finer detail so that they can be better appreciated at a closer distance.

2. The BedroomHanging an art piece on the wall that your bed directly faces will certainly give you something pleasant to look at as you prepare yourself for bed. If your bed is against a wall, you can put groups of smaller pictures there as well. Try to place your art in a location where it is viewable from where you or your guests would normally be in the room. An example would be the bed or the study table.

3. The Dining AreaThe dining area is also a good place to hang art. Pictures of food or flowers will add an interesting balance to the dining room and will create good conversational topic for your guests. Be sure to hang the art piece at just about the right height on the wall so that your guests seated around the table will be able to see it. As a rule of thumb, hanging the art piece at eye level should be just about right. However, if your dining area is in the kitchen, then you might want to think twice about putting your art there as the grease from regular cooking might damage it in the long run.

4. The Staircase LandingA staircase landing between two floors is also a great place to hang art. It will be an interesting focal point for someone who is climbing up the stairs. If the wall at the staircase landing is large enough, you may consider a larger art piece so that your visitor may start to notice it even before he reaches the top of the stairs. The wall along the stairway can also be used to hang art. As most stairways are narrow, you can use smaller pictures for this area as it will be very close to the viewer’s eyes as he is walking up or down the stairs.

Hanging art on your walls can really help to spice up the place and transform your house into a home. There are no hard and fast rules as to how you should decorate your home. Feel free to experiment. At the end of the day, so long as it looks good to you, it’s all that really matters.Enjoy your home decorating!

THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION recognized the valuable contribution of Saskatchewan volunteers during their annual Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Banquet held at Manitou Springs on April 24th, 2009. “Although we have many very humble volunteers who often feel that that they should not be recognized, it is important to show others that great things are being done by people all over the province and that we appreciate their efforts,” says Janet Schultz, Regional Director, Saskatchewan Canadian Diabetes Association.

Nation wide the Association benefits from the work of more than 20,000 volunteers who give selflessly of their time, effort and compassion each and every day. Their incredible contributions allow the Association to serve the more than 2.4 million Canadians living with diabetes in communities across Canada.

“Our volunteers are essential to the work we do and we are grateful for the time and the expertise they share with us and the communities we serve,” said Schultz. “Their commitment benefits the millions of people living with diabetes across Canada and their efforts help to create healthy, thriving communities.”

The 2008 awards recognized the following volunteers:

Length of Service: 10 yrs. - Dorothy & Pete Quebec (Swift Cur-rent), Darren Baiton (Moose Jaw), Sherry Doerr (Moose Jaw), Ken Rowan, (Estevan); 15 yrs. - Ella Lewis (Weyburn) and Dorothy Sovdi (Estevan); 20 years: Dorothy Schlemko, (Admiral), June Truman (Regina), Lloyd Soroka (Weyburn), Clint Davies (Estevan); 25 yrs. - Lottie Wihak (Melville)

Outstanding Health Professional: Lindsay McGregor (Cyprus Health Region)

Regional Inspiration: John Chick (Regina)

Outstanding Partnership AwardS: The Lions Clubs of Saskatchewan and Pharmasave No. 406 (Swift Current)

Camp AwardS: Amanda Leader (Tisdale) and Vanessa Davies (Southey)

Youth Volunteer of The Year: Jennifer Taylor (Langham)

Regional Appreciation Award: Donna Wiebe (Saskatoon)

Regional VolunteerS Of The Year: Peter Quebec (Swift Current) and Allison Koester, awarded posthumously (Prince Albert)

Several special guests were recognized during the Awards ceremony. Insulin Awards were given to four individuals who have been living with diabetes managed through insulin for over 40 years. Murray Straker was recognized for 60 years of living well with diabetes. “We have come a long way since I was diagnosed 60 years ago,” says Straker. “I was sent home with little knowledge or training and had to find my own ways to manage my diabetes.

Since then there have been many advances and there is much more help available.”

These individuals living well with diabetes, reminded us once again of the vital role that the Association and its volunteers assume. From advocating local government to support those living with diabetes to assisting at a Diabetes Expo; volunteers play an integral role in the ongoing fight against diabetes. Current volunteer opportunities include fundraising through community initiatives and residential campaigns, as

well as supporting community outreach through public programs and ser-vices, advocacy, administration and camps.

To learn how you can make a difference in your community or for more information, visit diabetes.ca, call 1-800-BANTING (226-8464) or visit your local Canadian Diabetes Association branch.

The Canadian Diabetes Association works in communities across the country to promote the health of Canadians and eliminate diabetes through our strong nationwide network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers, partners and supporters. In the struggle against this global epidemic, our expertise is recognized around the world. The Canadian Diabetes Association: setting the world standard.

Whether you pick out a square, round, rectangular or anything model or style in between, a glass dining table is one of the most spectacular furniture pieces you might own. They can fit in corners and into any space and they reflect light which in turn brightens any room.

Additional reasons why people choose to decorate with a glass dining table are listed below:

• Glass dining tables come in clear, frosted textures and an assortment of colors. Tinted black is one of the most common choices, second to the clear and frosted variants.

• People commonly choose glass dining tables because they are easy to assemble. They can normally be set out within short of a time as a few minutes. Furthermore, they typically are delivered to you in only a few main segments.

• An additional reason individuals pick out furniture pieces of this time is because of the versatility of this style. A table like this often matches with different forms of leather, cloth, or chromed steel. Some wooden chairs with cushions may also accom-pany a table of this style.

• They are often chosen because of the entire item is built as a whole. Some versions of glass dining tables even are created with an assortment of wood, chrome or other materials to great a unique, refined design.

• This particular style of furniture appears amazing with just about any mix of accessories. Modern or timeless classic lamps, light or dark drapes, or small and large figurines all have worked well with special models of dinner furniture.

• Speaking of ordering, your items normally are packed very well-at least if you order from an honest company. Whether you live in the city or in the countryside, you can guarantee (at least in most cases) that the pieces will be presented to you safely.

• In case of a shopping accident or damage of product, it is advisable to acquire insurance. It hardly ever is the case that an item you order will not come to you the manner it should. Nonetheless, glass dining tables are a precious commodity so cherish them.

• A glass dining table is made to fit in nearly any space. They even fit in some small flats or apartments, given that there are so many variations of them.

This type of furniture never seems to go out of style. Your glass dining table is likely to be used decades from now.

They are affordable as well as safe. They are ideal for just about any social or family function. A larger glass dining table can even be used for a buffet style meal.

from Weber’s Art of the Grill™ by Jamie PurviancePrep Time: 15 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 8 to 10 minutesSauce• 1 pound dark cherries, pitted (about 1c.)• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar• 1/2 cup dry red wine• 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar• 1 teaspoon kirsch (cherry liqueur)

• 4 medium peaches• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter• 2 tablespoons brown sugar• 1 cup vanilla ice cream• 4 cookies

1. In a sauté pan over medium-high heat, combine the pitted cherries, sugar, red wine, and balsamic vinegar. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is soft, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and purée until completely smooth. Return the mixture to the sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the kirsch. Simmer until reduced to about 1/4 cup, 1 to 2 minutes.

2. Cut the peaches in half and remove and discard the pits. Place the halves in a medium bowl. In a small saucepan set over low heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Coat the peaches with the butter mixture. Grill the peaches over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F) until grill marks are clearly visible and the peaches are soft, 8 to 10 minutes, turning once. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling.

3. While the peaches are still warm, layer each serving glass with 2 peach halves, 1 scoop of ice cream, and 1 tablespoon cherry sauce. Tuck a cookie into each glass. Serve immediately.

from Weber’s Big Book of Grilling™ by Jamie Purviance and Sandra S. McRaePrep Time: 10 minutesMarinating Time: 4 to 6 hoursGrilling Time: 40 to 50 minutesMarinade• 1/2 cup nely chopped fresh Italian parsley• 1/4 cup dry white wine• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice• 1 tablespoon minced garlic• 1 tablespoon black olive tapenade• 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 teaspoon paprika• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 whole chicken, 3-1/2 to 4 pounds, cut into 8 serving pieces

1. In a medium bowl whisk the marinade ingredients.

2. Rinse the chicken pieces under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Place in a large, resealable plastic bag and pour in the marinade. Press the air out the bag and seal tightly. Turn the bag to distribute the marinade, place in a bowl, and refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours, turning occasionally.

3. Remove the chicken from the bag, reserving the marinade. Pour the marinade into a small saucepan, bring to a boil, and boil for 1 full minute. Set aside.

4. Grill the chicken, skin side up, over indirect medium heat (350°F to 450°F) until the juices run clear and the meat is no longer pink at the bone. The leg and thigh pieces will take 40 to 50 minutes and the breast and wing pieces will take 30 to 40 minutes. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling. Baste with the boiled marinade during the last 10 to 20 minutes of grilling time. Remove from the grill and serve warm with orzo, a Greek salad, and pita bread, if desired.

It is important to be familiar with your barbeque equipment because not knowing what you are doing can result in consequences. Once you have familiarized yourself with the appropriate information, barbequing is an extremely fun thing to do, and it creates quality time with family and friends.Finding appropriate barbeque equipment becomes more and more difficult as time goes on. The reason? As time goes on, the selection of barbeque accessories increases. It becomes difficult to find the right equipment if you’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for, and using the wrong equipment is a great start for an unsuccessful barbeque experience. The following tools, the barbeque fork, the barbeque tongs, grilling spatula, brushes, and mittens are very basic barbequing accessories. They are comfortable to use and will more than pay for themselves every time you grille. Many people think the barbeque fork is used primarily turn meat and stab/transport it. Instead, you use the fork to test if your food is done, or to loosen up the food that gets stuck to the grille. As stated above, the fork is not actually intended for flipping. Instead, use barbeque tongs. Barbeque tongs are great for flipping various meats, from burgers to steaks to sausages, to ensure an even grille. Beyond

flipping food, you can use it to move things like coal and grates. It is a very basic barbequing item, and hard to be successful without a pair. For your more delicate foods, try using a grilling spatula instead of the barbeque tongs. The reason being because delicate foods will likely break apart if tongs are being used. Many find that spatulas with a bent handle and wide blade make it easiest, however, try holding a few different spatulas and get the one most comfortable to you..When barbequing, it is likely you will be brushing different sauces on different foods. To brush these sauces on, you will need brushes. It is highly recommended to have multiple brushes since there are so many different bastes and flavors. It is wise to use oven mittens when handling food from the grille, whether it be turning or removing a food on the grille. You can also use the mittens to pick up food wrapped in foil, handle hot accessories, and transport food.Of course the equipments used for barbequing far exceed this list, but this is a pretty basic list to start off with. Whether you’re handling forks, spatulas, tongs, or brushes, wear mittens when necessary, and try to keep your accessories with long handles. Spend time around the grille while others are hosting to learn about it and to be comfort-able around it so that when you host your own barbeque it is fun, safe, and delicious for all.

Dear Reena,I would like to know what the best way is to store onions so that they will keep for a fairly long time. Thank you, Ruth

Dear Ruth,My favourite onion storage solution includes a pair of clean pantyhose. Place an onion in the toe and tie a knot above the onion. Drop another onion into the leg of the pantyhose and tie a knot. Continue filling both legs with onions. Hang the contraption inside of a pantry or cupboard (warn family members, they may be scared at first). Each time you need an onion, cut below the knot of the next onion. Storing onions in pantyhose keeps them properly ventilated and dry so that they last long. Onions can also be chopped and put into freezable containers. Chopped onions can be stored in the refrigerator for 30 days or frozen for about six months. Extra tip: Do not store whole onions next to whole potatoes, they will both spoil. Always store onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.

Dear Reena,I am storing about 15 pounds of white sugar that turned as hard as a stone. I thought that the plastic lid would never let moisture in, but last summer’s moisture did it. The sugar is in a plastic pail about 1- foot in diameter. First of all, how can I get it out of the pail without a sledgehammer? Secondly, how can I use it up a little at a time without it reverting back to a solid lump? Thank-you, Audrey

Hello Audrey,With regards to the sledge hammer, you are not far off. Begin by lining the kitchen floor with a clean bed sheet. Have a friend help you turn the pail upside down onto the bed sheet and slam the container down hard to release the contents. Or fill a bathtub with hot water and place the bucket into the water. Make sure that the water does not touch the sugar. Leave for an hour and carefully pour sugar into separate sealable containers. After the sugar is released from the bucket, break the block into small pieces using a meat tenderizer or mallet and then use a food blender to grind the pieces until smooth. Store pieces of bread, moistened clay or halved apples with sugar to prevent future hardening. Extra tip: In order to soften brown sugar put it in a container and place it in the microwave with a small bowl full of water beside it. Mi-crowave for about 1 minute. If it is still hard, microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Repeat until sugar is soft, being careful not to burn the sugar.

Hi Reena,I’ve looked through two of your books but can’t find the solution that I need. I received a white polyester cotton blouse trimmed in heavy cotton lace, it looks like it’s been hanging for awhile and it has yellowed. I tried lemon juice and cream of tartar but it didn’t seem to do anything, I just guessed at the measure-ments and the time it needed to soak. Is there anything else I can try? I currently have it soaking in borax and water (again no measurements). I am desperate because I need it to sing in a choir and I don’t like yellowed whites. Thank-you so much for your help, your recipes are much appreciated. Rosabelle

Hi Rosabelle,Well the great news is that the blouse is white which makes cleaning this stain easier than most. If you have tried borax or washing soda and the stain has not budged you will need to move onto a more drastic solution because sometimes stains are here to stay. Assuming that the blouse is 100% washable, use a product called, “Iron Out” found at home hardware store such as Canadian Tire to zap that stain. Put the blouse into a pot filled with enough water to cover the fabric. Add one quarter cup “Iron Out”. Boil the blouse for 5 minutes. Using tongs remove fabric from water; the stain should be a distant memory, if the stain has faded but still remains repeat the process.

Hi Reena,What’s your best advice for removing odour from hockey equipment and most specifically hockey gloves? The gloves are synthetic. Do you have any suggestions for cleaning them? We are unable to go a full season without the gloves becoming unbearable. Also what is your best advice for storing hockey equipment between games and practices so as to prevent odours from build-ing? Thanks, Elliott

Elliott ,The easiest thing for you to do is move out or encourage family members to switch to chess but since those are not options let’s talk cleaning. When it comes to stor-ing hockey equipment the first step is to make a hockey tree using old hockey sticks and nails, hockey trees can also be purchased at sports stores. Whenever your hockey player returns home from a game or a practice make sure that he or she hangs all equipment on the tree which should be stored in a cold ventilated area such as outside or in a garage. Freezing equipment between uses kills the bacteria that cause some of the odour.

Before washing equipment check care label instructions. I wash all hockey equip-ment including gloves in the washing machine and lay them out to dry. Hockey equipment can also be washed in the bathtub with hot water and detergent. You can even add one-half cup of vinegar, borax or washing soda to the washing machine to battle odours. The hockey gloves will not lose their shape and you will once again breathe easy. When the season ends stuff skates, gloves and helmets with oodles of crumpled up newspaper to absorb odours.

You would see these kinds of doors in the futuristic movies once upon a time, and today you can own them! The unique design of doors was first introduced in the concept car, Alfa Romeo Carabo. This car and the door were designed by Marcello Gandini. Basically, Lambo doors, also known as scissor doors are basically doors that rotate vertically at a hinge that is fixed at the end of the windshield. Scissor doors, also known as Lambo doors were actually made possible due to the wide chassis of the Lamborghini Countach. When the Lambo doors were first seen, they were thought to be unconventional, unusual and even weird. However, Lambo doors today are a fashion statement of the highest order.

Lambo doors are basically used in the higher end and exotic cars. They were first used in many Lamborghini models, but went on to be used by many other higher end cars as the years progressed. There are several types of Lambo doors. Here is a short description of each of them:

Conventional Door Hybrid:

Some lambo doors are designed in such a way that they open like conventional doors as well as like scissor doors. They are designed so that the user can take benefit of the conventional doors as well as the scissor doors.

VLS:

These doors are slightly different than the normal scissor doors, in the sense that they are designed to open slightly outwards and then open in the manner of a scissor door. This allows the top edge of the door to clear the door frame. It also allows the top edge to clear the A-pillar of the car.

130 Degrees

Some lambo doors rotate till a hundred and thirty

degrees, a bit more than the normal ninety degrees. These doors have some advantages over the normal lambo doors which open till ninety degrees. For one, they do not obstruct the passenger while entering or exiting the car.

Though Lambo doors are seen more of a conventional fashion as compared to the normal doors, they have quite a few advantages over the conventional doors. A car with lambo doors can be parked in a smaller area as compared to a car with normal doors, because the area needed for a lambo door car with open doors is equal to a lambo door car with closed doors.

There are several lambo doors manufacturers today. You even install lambo doors on almost any type of car. Lambo doors are usually car owners who wish to have the sports car look on their cars. Almost anyone and everyone would like to have the stylish and distinct move-ment and appearance of a lambo door. Lambo doors can be considered to be one of the best customizations a car owner may carry out on their car.

There is an increase in the demand of lambo doors, and with demand rises supply. There quite a few ways in which you can get lambo doors installed on your car. However, before opting for lambo doors, you will have to ensure that the design and make of the lambo doors is compatible with your car design. You should also ensure that the company carrying the customization is reliable and a provider of good quality.

Somebody once asked me why I was so fascinated with muscle cars. You know, it’s hard for an outsider looking in to understand why we muscle car lovers are so fanatical about our cars. Until they’ve been behind the wheel of a newly restored ’66 Pontiac GTO, they just haven’t a clue. Why is it that we can browse through muscle car advertisements for hours on end? Why do we have to go to every muscle car show that comes near our town? Why do we drive out of our way to see some of the hottest muscle cars around? Why do we seemingly pour all of our extra money into our muscle cars? Some people think a passion for muscle cars comes from peer pres-sure – a need to impress other people per se. As a muscle car enthusiast I can honestly say that’s not it, at least not for me. My interest in muscle cars dates way back to before I was ever concerned about what anybody thought. I have always found muscle cars to be fascinating and exciting.First, muscle cars are original. Those who collect or restore muscle cars put their heart and soul into their hobby which makes every muscle car truly unique. Second, muscle cars are powerful. There’s nothing that gets the adrenaline pumping quite like sitting behind the wheel of a classic, high-performance muscle car. Third, when you take a classic car, restore it and muscle it up, you really have something to be proud of. It’s a lot like an artistic ability for me – like

taking a blank canvas and creating an incredible piece of art out of it.One thing is for certain, regardless of the reason a muscle car devotee is interested in muscle cars, we all seem to talk the same talk and walk the same walk. Dealing with muscle cars is an incredible social outlet. Whether we collect, restore, show, or race our muscle cars, it doesn’t matter. We’re all on the same wavelength and we truly enjoy look-ing at and chatting about muscle cars. Some enthusiasts have specific lines of muscle cars that they are inter-ested in, while others are just crazy about muscle cars in general. Some like imports, others like exports, and most all muscle car enthusiasts have a strong interest in classics. We can look at them, talk about them, drive them, or just work on them. Muscle cars give us something to look forward to, something fun to invest our time and money into, and the muscle car hobby keeps us out of trouble – for the most part.

Take a look at some of the varieties of Western saddles out there, and remember that there are plenty more that can be found as well!

A trail or pleasure saddle is a Western saddle that is a saddle design mainly for comfort during long rides. It’s lighter than a working saddle, and there are many different variations on it. It tends to have a higher fork and a thinner horn, and it often features a padded seat.

Barrel racing saddles are built for speed, and they are often even lighter than pleasure saddles. They are meant to anchor the rider to their horse through all sorts of twists and turns, and you’ll often see them at sports events. They tend to feature a tall thin horn, and a deep seat for additional stability

Show saddles are meant to be seen, and it shows. These saddles are highly decorative and can

be considered quite trendy as they can fall in and out of fashion very quickly. You’ll find that they tend to have lots of silver trim, intricate leather tooling and deeper skirts to show off the stylings.

As the name suggests, a roping saddle is meant to help rope and dally a cow. These saddles tend to be extremely sturdy and to have a wooden saddle tree with a low and rounded fork. You’ll find that there is often a full double rigging for stability and a tall thick saddle horn.

A reining saddle, with its low seat, free swinging fenders and thinner stirrup leathers are designed to show off the horse’s conformation and precision. When looking at a reining saddle,

you’ll also find that there is no flank cinch, and the rigging is dropped in order to reduce the bulk that occurs under the rider’s legs.

When a horse and rider are involved in cutting, where a stock animal will be separated from the herd, you’ll see a cutting saddle with high and wide swells to keep the rider seated, a tall thin horn, which makes for a good gri,p and forward hung fenders that will help the rider stay balanced.

The endurance saddle, which is meant to see horse and rider through 50 to 100 miles at a stretch, is typically made light but sturdy, with a padded seat, deep stirrups and no horn. This is a saddle that is designed for durability and comfort, and is made to be fairly small and light.

Ranch saddles are also known as “all around” saddles, and these saddles are meant to about as multi-purpose as you can get. They are heavier saddles that are suited to both full work days and long rides, and they are meant to keep you and the horse comfortable for long stretches of time. They tend to have a deep seat, a thick saddle horn, and are usually double rigged.

About the Author: Written by TJ Stanton. TJ Stanton is a life-long cowboy and editor of www.TheWesternSaddleShop.com, a source for new western saddles of every type. Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=283341&ca=Sports

Whether you are a Western rider yourself or you are simply interested in the variety of riding out there, you’ll find that there is a Western saddle designed for any riding activity or discipline.

RECREATIONAL

VEHIC

LES

You’ve purchased an RV and the one thing that will help you have many years worth of enjoyment from it is without doubt a regular maintenance schedule. You may have negotiated a maintenance plan into your purchase price, if that’s the case great. If you have bought a second hand RV, you may be able to do a lot of the preventative maintenance yourself.Like any expensive item you cherish, you’ll no doubt make sure that it’s well protected and well looked after. Preventative RV maintenance is all about keeping a check on those parts that are either known to cause problems or will probably cause problems if left poorly maintained.A few of the more common things to keep a close check on when maintaining an RV are very similar to that of a car. These maintenance items will ensure that the basics are covered.Fuel System CheckRegularly check that the fuel filter is clean and free from debris that may have come from the fuel tank. Clogged filters will make it harder for the RV’s engine to operate efficiently as the correct mixture of fuel to air may not be maintained within the combustion chamber. This can cause what’s known as “kangaroo” jumping or juddering and is not a pretty sight.Air Filter SystemCheck the air filters and replace them regularly at least 3 to 4 times a year depending on how dirty or dusty the local environment is. Air filters keep the air that’s introduced into the engine combustion chamber clean. When these filters become blocked or compromised they will affect the efficiency and hence MPG of your RV. Check them regularly and replace when required or at the interval you have decided upon.Braking System CheckBe sure to check the brake pads and brake fluid before attempting any long journey. Brake pads will get worn down fast in more difficult or challenging terrain. Check the brake fluid lines regularly for damage or leaks.Ignition System CheckThe contact points on the ignition need to be

checked at least once every six months. Your engine may be having a hard time starting and this is exactly the type of problem caused by poor contacts. If you have a direct injection engine, clogged injectors could cause the same problem.Cleaning products are readily available that you can put into the fuel tank that can add some life to your injectors. You should though know that if this does not work, your injectors may be past the point of saving and will need to be changed.Suspension System CheckTires that have uneven wear patterns are often the result of suspension problems or may just be incorrect inflation pressures. If the RV leans heavily in turns or the front end drops low when braking, there is a real possibility that you have suspension problems. The old test for shock absorbers was to manually bounce each corner of the RV, if possible and watch to see if there are more than just a few bounces. Excessive bouncing will probably mean that the shocks need changing. If you have a large RV, then it would be best to get the above symptoms checked out at a local garage that offers RV maintenance.Preventative maintenance will help your RV run for much longer and give you extra years of service. Look after your RV and it will look after you. It would be safe to say it’s a bit like a marriage.

Extreme sports are those which are characteristically thrilling, owing to the high level of risk involved. They often include extremes of physical exertion or speed, or height. Danger is always present, and this adds to the thrills experienced. Many people enjoy watching extreme sports, rather than participating themselves. The popularity of extreme sports has increased in recent years, especially amongst young people.

One reason behind the evolution of extreme sports is the technological development which has made them possible. Most people do not experience much risk in everyday life, and this too adds to their attraction. People seek the thrill, and enjoy the attention it receives as well.

The Ten Most Popular Extreme Sports

SurfingThe surfer uses a board to glide along on a breaking wave. There are now two classifications of surfing, based on the design of the board and rid-ing style. These are short and long boarding. Surfing is said to have been developed long ago in Polynesia, and came to the rest of the world when Europeans first observed it.

WindsurfingThis sport uses a surfboard with a sail, by means of which the rider can skim across the surface of the water. Thus it combines elements of surfing and sailing. The sport developed in the latter part of the twentieth century.

Hot Air BallooningThis technology was the first form of human air transport. The balloon contains a bag which holds the hot air, and the passengers are carried in a wicker basket which hangs underneath. Hot air ballooning is now a sport, and modern structure includes fire resistant materials for the mouth of the balloon.

Mountain BikingIn this sport the bike rider rides over rough ground on a mountain bike or

hybrid road bike. There are four classifications in mountain biking: street riding, downhill, freeride and cross country. Mountain biking has now developed as an extreme sport, and there is now a hall of fame to celebrate the achievements of early mountain bikers.

Hang GlidingA hang glider is an aircraft which you can launch yourself, and which you then guide in the air by means of shifting your weight. You can also steer them by means of aircraft control technology. Modern hang gliders can perform aerobatic stunts and can fly long distances and at significant height.

ParaglidingThe techniques of flying and launching a paraglider are similar to those in hang gliding. There are no solid supports in a paraglider. The paraglider pilot needs to possess understanding of relevant engineering technology and aircraft design, as well as weather conditions. Rough weather can cause a high degree of risk in this sport.

SkydivingSkydiving, or parachuting, is when a person falls (on purpose) from a height, supported by a parachute. Early jumps were from hot air balloons in the eighteenth century, and it became an international sport in the mid twentieth century. It is now popular both as a recreation and as a sport.

MountaineeringThis sport is enjoyed as a recreational activity as well as a sport, and combines elements of hiking, trekking and walking. The original intention was to reach high places, where no one had trekked previously. It then developed into a physically demanding sport. Some people enjoy mountaineering in the snow, others prefer rocky climbs.

Ice ClimbingThis sport means climbing up icefalls and ice covered rock faces. There are two variations, water ice climbing (on cliffs or under waterfalls), and alpine ice climbing (in the mountains). The equipment used varies according to things such as the type of slope and ice texture.

Bungee JumpingThis extreme sport involves jumping from a height, whilst attached from above by a long elastic cord. The jumper usually jumps from a structure such as a crane, bridge or high building. The jumper falls free until caught and bounced up and down by the cord, and this provides lots of thrill.

It was not long ago when all outboard motors – whether for fishing or waterskiing on your favor lake issued that well known trademark of blue smoke.

On top of that there would always be mixing the 2 cycle oil into the gasoline tank with all the frequent cross examination by your father whether the oil / gas mixture in the outboard motor was correct either for that brand motor or was the mix for another motor in your outboard motor collection. Why, you most likely wondered why it all couldn’t be simple and easy – just like filling up the family car with gas at the gas station 1, 2, 3 on the way up to the lake, cottage chalet or fishing or waterskiing event.

Fortunately things have changed with the times. Convenience is everything.

Four stroke outboard motors rather than the older 2 stroke type seem to be the norm. Well at least with new and newer model motors. Of course with the limited use many motors receive over the summer and spring / fall weekend boating seasons there are still many of the older belching motors still around for sale – at considerably reduced prices.

Convenience has its price.

In a nutshell it can be said that four stroke outboard motors are everything a two stroke is not. They tend to run quiet and smooth, produce less pollution, burn less gas – which is a major consideration with four dollar a gallon gasoline prices. In addition it can be generally said that four cycle outboard motors, have in comparison to the older style 2 cycle motors- increased longevity. Most importantly for boating safety on the water it also can be said, that with proper maintenance and care, four cycle motors tend to be much more reliable as well – compared to two cycle outboard motors. But best of all its no muss, no fuss, no forgetting of the two cycle oil to ruin your day at the dock.

Four cycle motors take simple, standard, run of the mill gasoline. They fill up with the same readily available fuel as your family car.

Still there are pros and cons to both sides of the coin. There are people and situations where a good old two cycle outboard motor is preferred and yet other areas where the newer four cycle outboards rule the day. In terms of fuel economy and maintenance costs the four strokes are preferred. Organizations and businesses that have a fleet of boars usually prefer four strokes – less cost for gas and maintenance, more reliability and not only simpler maintenance but also less chance of guests as well as workers making mistakes with the oil / gas mixture or in extreme cases even forgetting to mix the oil with the gas. These fleets genially turn

over and replace their stock of motors on a regular basis – just like a fleet of leased cars or trucks, replacing these motors with new ones on a 2 year cycle basis. Hence there is usually a good supply of relatively new, reliable four stroke motors around for most cottagers, water skiers or fisherman.

On the other hand a two cycle motor is lighter to carry – there is no cranks case full of oil to add weight. A two cycle motor, empty of gasoline can be carried in any position where a four cycle – with the oil in its crankcase can not. In cases where light weight is a consideration – for example fishing lodges where everything is flown in or even walked in prefer the light weight and greater flexibility of transportation and storage of two cycle engines. Fishermen who physically carry the motor to a remote lake or setting are also in this boat so to say. However on the other hand for slow speed trolling a four cycle engine will completely out compete the two cycles. Ditto that for bass fishermen who need ultra quick acceleration at times. For bass fisherman the much greater speed and acceleration of the four cycles make it the wise choice over the two cycle outboard engine.

In the end it can be said that boaters and fisherman now have a more convenient option in their outboard motor choices. It used to be that there was only one choice – the two cycle engine with its characteristic blue smoke. Oil had to mix into the gas. Now with the availability and popularity of four stroke outboard motors, the boating public – whether they are fisherman, water skiers or simply those who need a boat for transportation or recreation have a choice. On top of that the four stroke engine is a lot more convenient. Just fill it up with regular gas.

Shafts for golf clubs are primarily made of either steel or graphite. The steel shafts are made from a carbon steel alloy and protective chrome plating is applied to prevent it from rusting. A graphite shaft can also be called a composite shaft because it made from multiple layers of carbon fiber and epoxy resin holding the layers together. There are even some shafts made of both steel and graphite. However, you are probably wondering which is best for you?

Steel shafts have been used for golf clubs since the 1920’s, although earlier versions can be dated back to the turn of the 20th century. Graphite shafts are a relatively new material used in golf, dating back to the late 1960’s, but didn’t gain widespread acceptance until the mid 1980’s. Both materials are used for some of the following reasons.

Steel shafts are less expensive to manufacturer and easily able to make consistent from shaft-to-shaft. Steel shafts are made from a single material, so creating a new model is limited to geometry changes to the shaft such as the outside diameters along its’ entire length, wall thick-ness, distance between each step (unless it is a stepless shaft) and usage of additional metals (such as chromium, vanadium and nickel) in the alloys. Premium steel shafts cost about the same as low end graphite shafts.

Graphite shafts were originally designed to make a lightweight alternative to steel shafts. However, there are graphite shafts that actually weigh more than some steel models, but this is very rare. Steel shafts range from approximately 90g to 130g, while graphite shafts can be a low as 39g. The most popular weight range of graphite shafts for woods is 60-70 grams and for iron shafts the weight is closer to 70 – 80 grams. One of the biggest advantages to graphite shafts is their lighter weight.

Since the graphite shafts are generally lighter than steel shafts, there is a potential for greater distance because they may be able to be swung slightly faster. Most graphite shafted clubs are assembled longer in length than standard steel-shafted clubs. Golfers that tend to be less consistent may find the steel shafts to give them greater control. But for those golfers, such as ladies and seniors, who need additional length to enjoy the game better, graphite shafts are a welcome alternative.

Another advantage of graphite shafts over steel is from a design standpoint. As earlier stated, graphite shafts are manufactured from multiple layers of carbon fiber. Each layer can be a different modulus (strength) material and can be applied at different angles to contribute independently to the stiffness or reduction in twisting along the length of the shaft. This allows graphite shaft manufactures almost limitless possibilities in new designs.

Because of the various materials able to be used in the manufacturer of the golf shaft, there is a much greater range in pricing as well. An inexpensive graphite shaft may cost $10.00, while the most expensive shaft can cost as much as $1000.00! Although most

graphite shafts normally found in $10 - $90 range. Expect a club with a graphite shaft to cost more than with a steel shaft.

This is one reason why you so the majority of golfers have both steel and graphite shafted clubs in their bag. Greater than 90% of all drivers have graphite shafts in them. This is because the driver is designed for maximum distance and is much larger and easier-to-hit than they were just a few years ago. For fairway woods, more than 80% are equipped with graphite shafts as players tend to match the driver with the same type of shaft. Golfers, who tend to hit the ball a long way and/or need more control, may find steel to their liking. There are a number of lightweight steel shafts available as an alternative to graphite.

Irons and wedges are usually just the opposite in the shaft material choice. Approximately 75% of irons sold today are sold with steel shafts. The primary reason for choosing steel may be an economic factor as the irons and wedges make up a great percentage of the clubs

in the bag. The other reason why golfers choose steel in their irons and wedges is for control rather than increasing distance, especially among stronger individuals. However, there are a number of quality graphite iron shafts that come in all different weights and stiffness to match nearly every golfer.

The choice between steel or graphite shafts for you will be based on if you are looking at greater distance or not. Greater distance will come at a greater cost, not only economically, but for those who already don’t hit their ball very straight, hitting the ball further may even compound the problem. Make sure to make the choice wisely based on your personal goals and current tendencies.
