Find out what your choices in home lamps can mean about you and what others might perceive about you simply from the lighting you use in your home.

    1. If you choose Tiffany lamps, you may be more in tune with creativity, art, colors, and a fine elegant lifestyle. Tiffany lamps are beautiful works of art made by artisans with stained glass pieces they create into stylish patterned shades. Tiffany lamps enjoy a long history as coveted lighting that exudes fine style in home decor.

    2. If you like touch lamps, you may be focused more on practicality. More interested in ease of use than fancy or expensive materials, you are likely to be a down to earth person whos got easy going needs when it comes to lighting. You like interesting magical things too, like touch lighting, though. So, you basically seem to like to have fun with a twist. Whats the twist? Touch lamps also have a variety of shades, including floral patterns, animal images, celebrity images, so you can find what feels just right for you!

    3. Bedside table lamps might tell a lot about you as well. Romantic types may be more likely to seek out table lamps with flowers, Victorian themes or styles, and low wattage to enhance those intimate moments. Practical types, though, will likely choose table lamps with enough wattage thats comfortable for reading or laptop computing in bed. Home nesters who want to surround themselves with the themes and the quirky favorite things they love (monkeys, palm trees, motorcyles, panda bears, mountains, boats, or whatever thrills you), will choose a novelty table lamp that includes or represents such a beloved theme.

    4. Including chandelier lighting in your home used to exude more of an aire of opulence than perhaps it does today. However, especially when a larger, or more intricate, or more impressive one is selected, then these chandeliers still make their owners and their guests feel a thrill of wealth and elegance as they upscale their home surroundings.

So what type of lamp and lighting ideas are you more drawn to? Perhaps it supports your view of yourself or you discovered another facet of wonderful you and how its playing a role in your lamp choices. Whatever home lamps you choose, embrace your choice so long as you remember that impressing others should be way down on the totem pole in terms of importance. Think use of lamp and think of impressing yourself first. Then the rest will follow.

Remember that even though the lamps you choose may make others guess certain things about you, that should be at best your third most important decision in selecting your lamp choices. First, choose lamps by the tasks and preferences the lighting is needed for. Next choose your lighting by the feelings of happiness and satisfaction the lamp invokes in you (love your lamp!). Finally, perhaps give some weight in your choice for the type of impressions youd like your lamps to make on the guests to your home.

Remember that even lower priced quirky lamps with funny or unusual themes can make great impressions on your guests because youll have stories you can share with them about your hobbies or quirky collections and tastes! And, everyone enjoys a good story!

About the Author: Written by Liz Hekimian-Williams Liz Hekimian-Williams still remembers getting her first chandelier. Saving money for it was a hurdle, but it sure was fun to get it. Since then she enjoys the lamp over her dining room table as it lights up the familys holiday dinners. Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=354231&ca=Home+Management

Communication is just as important of an element when it comes to design as it is in Dr. Phils world. Many of us have experienced the renovation process at one point in time. How often have you been confused or overwhelmed with the whole design process? If you answer yes to this question, youll be pleased to know that technology is moving full force ahead with wonderful solutions. Some of the newest and most innovative design technology includes providing the client with realistic renderings that assist both the designer and client with the communication process. 3D models are the new rage that allows the client to visualize lighting conditions, products and finishes and even spatial requirements.

This design tool is not only used for new construction but to help visualize the full potential of an existing home. With the economic down-turn we cant help but to re-

search cost effective ways to enhance and accommodate our particular lifestyles. Todays trend is to renovate existing properties that better suit your own personal needs, rather than dumping it and moving on to an entirely new home. The 3D models allow the designer to show the client specific details for any renovation, including tile, carpet, cabinetry, lighting, wall color and furnishings. Lighting is such an important element in design and using this process allows us to determine the proper placement and amount of lighting required in the home before making the final commitment.

We have also used this new design technology in some of our most recent projects, including an exterior renovation of an existing country home. We were able to communicate our thoughts and ideas with the client in a manner that

was simple to interpret. The client requested an exterior facelift to modernize their home and give it wonderful curb appeal. We were able present different window options as well as a new color palette, deck and landscaping ideas to

the client in a realistic rendering. Providing the client with this service allows for modifications to take place before the final work commences and gives the client peace of mind before committing to the scope of work. In the past, clients were not able to visualize the entire project until it had been completed.

Computer renderings certainly help to eliminate anxiety problems (or uncertainty) that clients may experience during any renovation process. This also has been proven to be a cost-effective tool to use at the initial design stage to prevent costly mistakes from occurring and misinterpretations by the builder or contractor.

Technology such as this helps designers focus on better communication (resulting in better relationships) with their clients. In such a busy world, its nice to know that there are much simpler solutions to utilize when designing or renovating your home.

Bathrooms are probably one of the most important rooms in a house and yet sadly often the one room which is overlooked when it comes to interior design styles.

Although bathrooms have to be practical and functional places to abandon their design style is a mistake many people make.

As the bathroom is usually the smallest room in the house they can be transform and rejuvenated inexpensively and fast.

One of the easiest way to bring a bathroom up to date is to have a white bathroom suite. These offer the possibility of using any accent colours and still look striking.

Mixing old with new is one of this years in vogue trends, so although you may not wish to replace the whole bathroom suite it is possible to inject a clean and fresh look by simply giving careful consideration to the colour you use.

Before you begin it is best to take a step back, look at what you have. If you are on a restricted budget it may not be possible to replace the suite,

however with some careful styling your bathroom can become more than just a place it wash!

Free standing baths in either a modern design or reproductions of Victorian roll top and slipper baths are among this years collision of old and new. Designers have taken these classic shapes and used them to brighten up a bath by having bold and vivid colours on the outside. By taking this idea and painting the side of your bath with paints which have been specifically designed for baths you can recreate this design styles.

Those that have a bath with a side panel may like to think about replacing this and incorporating some striking tile work which covers the walls, the side of the bath and the floor to provide a striking and cohesive visual effect.

The great advantage of using bold colours such as blue, red and orange with white is the possibility to chose one of these as the accent colour for the window dressing. Blinds are always a good option in a bathroom due to their resilience against damp conditions.

Black may seem a bit gloomy for a bathroom, but when used with crisp whites the effect can look stunning. Lacy shower curtains add a touch of femininity particularly in pale creams or white. Add some pretty lace edged towels and the room will start to come together beautifully.

Keep with the main theme of white and add narrow louver Venetian blinds for privacy and an clean feel to the room. The great thing about using a blind fitted into the recess of the window, is that the sill will be left free to add personal touches such as delicate perfume bottles and a glass vase filled with fresh, fragrant flowers. No clutter is the hallmark of making bathroom designs a success. Using vanity style units or if the bathroom is large enough a free standing cupboard would be ideal.

Try and keep to a specific theme for the bathroom and you can produce some stunning design styles which do not cost a fortune. Scour charity shops, visit boots fairs and markets to pick up inexpensive items like old fashioned wooden towel rails and framed mirrors to add the finishing touches.

You have a wide range of stain shades and colors for hardwood floors. You can depend on color charts for different colors but the colors on the surface still looks different from the colors printed on paper. In addition, a particular stain has different effect on different types of hardwood floors so it is best to consider hardwood species.

Moreover, stain also looks a bit different on newly installed wooden floor from on refinished flooring though the right sanding is helpful to have a better stain effect. It is recommended to try different kinds of stain colors on a certain sample of wood in order to get an idea of the result.

Hardwood floor has different kinds of shades and colors and some of the most popular stain choices are the following:

1.The natural stain of hardwood floor looks like bare wood.

2.Light shade is a popular hardwood floor shade since it adds a fine tone to the wood as well as it darkens the grain.

3.Another popular choice is the medium shade, which is darker than the light shade.

4.The dark shade is often very dark in color and has a rich feel.

5.Hardwood floor custom color is any color aside from brown, sand of tan.

Most people choose deep green or bright red that can give striking results. Usually, it is best to select a vibrant color when it comes to smaller rooms or areas.

When you find the shade that you want, make sure to try it in not noticeable places such as inside your closet. Make sure to let the stain dry before making a decision. Remember that the color of the paint tends to become lighter when it dries.

One of the most practical materials used for flooring is hardwood. Its

protective finish can wear off especially in areas that are often used so it is necessary to refinish the hardwood floor. Dulled areas of hard wood that are hidden for a long time must be refinished in order to freshen up the hardwood floor.

Hardwood finishing job may be quite difficult and messy because you first need to remove the previous finish of the floor. If you do not have any experience in this field, it is best to hire a hardwood flooring professional who has the knowledge in refinishing floors. These hardwood floor professionals have the appropriate tools to do the job such as power sanders to eliminate the existing finish of the floor and to accept the new stain.

Make sure to do a refinish test to know if the hardwood flooring is dirty or shot. Here are the ways to do a flooring refinish test:

Focus on the high-traffic areas where the finish is more abused. Pour one tablespoon of water to the floor and if the water forms beads it means that, the floor is sealed properly. Usually, you need to cleaning and stain removal. On the other hand, if the water takes several minutes to be absorbed and leaves a slight dark mark on the floor it means that the finish is partly worn. You must not wait long to refinish your floor. In addition, if the water soaks right in and then leaves dark spot it means that you need to refinish the floor immediately.

Not all garden pests are harmful for your garden. Some garden pests, in fact, provide excellent pest control to protect your plants from other quite harmful insects. Isnt nature wonderful? Here are 5 well-known garden pests which you wouldnt object to having in your garden. Some very useful techniques are also offered on how you can attract these insects that are in your area over to your garden.

    1. Praying mantis.

Praying mantises are regarded as the consummate small-sized predator. They are something to behold in their natural environment. The manner in which they hunt down their prey is methodical and meticulous. This makes them efficiently dangerous for other garden insects, but they are never dangerous for your garden. They harm it not at all. Praying mantises can immediately put

a stop to any pest infestation that may have started in your area. As a matter of fact, most gardening shops sell praying mantises for this purpose alone. Thats how useful they are.

    2. Ladybugs.

If youre living in North America, then chances are very good that your garden will host this kind of bug.

They are extremely widespread and so are very common. Ladybugs feed on soft-bodied insects. These soft-bodies are harmful for your garden. Ladybugs will even feed on the eggs and larvae of these harmful garden pests. This

is what makes ladybugs an excellent feature of natural pest control.

    3. Spiders.

We all know what many spiders do. They cap-ture insects with their webs and feed on them. In this way, these spiders help to manage pest infestation. Those that dwell in gardens are usually not poisonous or lethal, and there is virtually no risk of thesecreatures ever creeping into the household.

If you want to attract spiders in your garden, grow some permanent perennials. These kinds of spiders find perennials very suitable for a home.

    4. Tachinid flies.

Grow some pollen and nectar plants, and youll be able to attract this variety of flies. Once in your garden, these Tachinid flies will feed on small harmful insects. Were talking about armyworms, cutworms and cabbage loopers. How about caterpillars, gypsy moths, squash bugs and sawflies?

All of these pests will eat away at your plants and give you a decaying garden. Tachinid flies to the rescue!

    5. Parasitic wasps.

Again, by providing pollen and nectar plants, youd be able to attract these beneficial garden insects. They really will help your garden because these parasitic wasps will attack and feed on the eggs of harmful insects. With parasitic wasps inhabiting your garden, youd be able to stop the infestation of dangerous insects by eliminating their

    very source: their eggs.

Isnt that wonderful to have insects that will help your garden grow instead of damaging it? There are more kinds of insects that can help you in dealing with different types of pest invasions. Take the time to learn them. Your garden will be better for it.

The only place in the universe where a flag flies all day, never goes up or comes down, never flies half-mast and does not get saluted, is the moon.

It is, of course, the American flag, the only country to have landed people on

the moon even though British Interplanetary Society engineers had in 1939 designed a ship to carry people to the moon. Since Apollo 11 landed

on moon on 20th July 1969 untill 1972, 12 American astronauts walked on the

moon, spending 170 hours roaming over 60 miles (100 km), planting 6

flags in total. They brought home 880 pounds (400 kilograms) of soil and rock, and 30,000

    photographs.

The 6 American flags on the moon were planted

during the missions of Apollo 11,12,14,15,16,and 17. The flags of the European Union, Russia, and India are also on the moon but they are

    displayed on equipment or probes.

The first landing of the moon is celebrated in the festival of Evoloterra on 20th July.

Cant remember if an egg is fresh or hard boiled? Just spin the egg. If it wobbles, its raw. If it spins easily, its hard boiled. A fresh egg will sink in water, a stale one will float.

Eggs contain all the essential protein, minerals and vitamins, except Vitamin C. But egg yolks are one of few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D.

The colour of the egg shell is not related to quality, nutrients, flavour, or cooking characteristics. White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and white ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. Bown egg layers usually are slightly larger and require more food, thus brown eggs usually cost more than white eggs.

China produces most eggs, at about 160 billion per year. In the US, about 260 million hens produce more than 65 billion eggs per year. A hen can lay about 250 eggs per year.

An egg shell has as many as 17,000 pores over its surface.

There are 150 species of chicken.

Chicken are descendants of the red jungle fowl (gallus gallus spadiceus) that lives in Asia.

The chicken is one of the first domestic animals, appearing in China around 1400 BC.

from Webers Art of the Grill by Jamie PurviancePrep Time: 5 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 6 to 8 minutes 2 tablespoons whole coffee beans

    2 tablespoons whole black peppercorns

4 New York strip steaks, each about 3/4 pound and 1 inch thick

    Vegetable oil

    Kosher salt

    1. Coarsely grind the coffee beans and peppercorns in a food processor or coffee

    grinder.

    2. Lightly brush or spray the steaks with oil

and then season them on both sides with

    the coffee-pepper mixture.

    4. Grill the steaks over direct high heat (450F to 550F), with the lid closed as

much as possible, until cooked to your desired doneness, 6 to 8 minutes for

    medium rare, turning once.

    3. Remove the steaks from the grill. Season both sides with salt. Allow to rest

for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.

    Makes 4 servings

Prep Time: 20 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 18 to 23 minutes 1 medium red bell pepper 1 bunch asparagus, tough ends removed 2 small zucchini, halved lengthwise 4 plum tomatoes, halved lengthwise Extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt

Sauce 2 eggs, well beaten 1 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 shallot, minced 2 medium garlic cloves, minced 1 pound spaghetti

    1. Grill the bell pepper over direct medium heat (350F to 450F), with the lid closed as much as possible, until blackened and blistered on all sides, 12 to 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Remove the pepper from the grill and place in a paper bag; close tightly. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes to steam off the skin.

    2. Brush the asparagus, zucchini, and tomatoes with olive oil and season them with salt. Grill over direct medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes, turning once. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling. Remove from the grill. Take the pepper out of the bag and peel away the charred skin. Cut off the top and remove the seeds. Coarsely chop all the vegetables and set aside.

    3. In a small bowl mix the sauce ingredients.

    4. In a large saut pan over medium heat, warm the olive oil and saut the shallot and garlic until tender, about 4 minutes. Add the grilled vegetables and stir to combine.

    5. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Drain the noodles and transfer to a large serving bowl. Immediately add the sauce to the hot noodles (so the heat will thoroughly cook the eggs) and toss well to coat. Add the grilled vegetables, shallot, and garlic, and toss to combine. Serve immediately and top with additional cheese, if desired.

Dear Reena,Congratulations on your wonderful books and newspaper columns Reena! We have a mountainous ant hill which is rapidly destroying our perennial garden. HELP! Thanks, Ditte

Ditte,There are a number of solutions for tackling ants because what works for one will not necessarily work for another since there is such a large variety of ant species. To begin with many ants will stay away if they smell an odor unpleasant to them such as: cin-namon, garlic, tea leaves or coffee grounds. You can also sprinkle ant hills with dry oatmeal or Cornflake

cereal. Another option is to make what I like to call Rhubarb Tea. In a stainless steel pot boil rhubarb leaves with water. Pour the liquid onto ant hills. This helps get rid of ants and because of the oxalic acid in rhubarb, your pots will come out sparkly clean! You can make your own ant ridder by combining 1 cup borax with 2 tbsp. icing sugar; add a few drops of honey. Trickle near ants or leave this solution in a bowl and place it outside where ants are a problem. Keep this combination away from pets and children.

Dear Reena,I have stainless steel cutlery that has turned black. I have tried cleaner, the foil method, and have not had much luck. I did try bleach with dish soap and that did clean them a bit but there must be something better. Thank you, Judy

Hi Judy,Well, Im not sure what you used for the foil method but let me give you my favorite foil trick, I love it! Get a baking pan and loosely lay crumpled aluminum foil onto the bottom. Into the pan drop one-quarter cup Arm and Hammer So Clean washing soda and enough hot water to cover the bottom of the pan. Put the stainless steel into the water and washing soda for about 5 mins. If anything is going to get rid of the black this is it!

Dear Reena,I have your books, but was unable to find a cure for ink stains on a suede leather

jacket. I havent had it for very long, so I dont want to give it up just yet. Thanks so much! Sandra

Hi Sandra,The problem with ink stains on leather and suede is that as ink seeps into the textile it actually dyes it which makes it very difficult to remove. Begin with this easy solution:

Sprinkle the area with baking soda and then using a stiff dampened brush move the brush back and forth until the stain is gone. If the stain remains, dab the area with rubbing alcohol and a white cloth. If you see ink appearing on your cloth, continue until the stain is gone. If dye from the jacket lifts, stop cleaning. In this case your best bet is to take the jacket to a professional leather cleaner or leave the jacket as is. As you wear it, the ink will likely fade over time.

Dear Reena,I have stainless steel cutlery that has turned black. I have tried cleaner, the foil method, and have not had much luck. I did try bleach with dish soap and that did clean them a bit but there must be something better. Thank you, Judy

Hi Cathy,If I were in your situation I would put the tablecloth in 12 cups of hot water and 1 cup of borax or washing soda. Let soak for an hour. While wearing rubber gloves, remove the

tablecloth, rinse with water and lay flat to dry. Another option is to soak the tablecloth in

1-cup 3% hydrogen peroxide and 8 cups water. Leave for an hour and lay outside to dry. Worst case scenario, soak the tablecloth in a commercial product called, Iron Out and hot water, rinse in cold water and lay flat to dry. Note: Iron Out is risky because it is a strong

    toxic product.

    Feedback from Reader:Hi Reena,

I read your reply regarding smelly towels as a result of front end loading washing machines. I feel I have to respond because this is a much bigger issue than it might seem at first. The odor is not caused by dyes but by bacteria growing in the fabric of

the face cloths and towels, particularly when moistened by a couple of uses. It can be transferred to clothes in the wash and produce rashes. Some new clothes, towels or other cloth products have this smell even when new because they have already been

contaminated with bacteria. We have a front loader that has had this issue since almost new. Virtually all low water

consumption washing machines have this problem which is why you are seeing ma-chines on the market with sanitizing cycles, silver interiors and steam cycles in part.

The manufacturers recommend the doors be left open to help dry the interiors and door seals reduce bacterial growth. They also recommend an occasional wash cycle with

chlorine bleach with the washer empty to kill any growth. I do not know if theyacknowledge that it is mostly a bacterial problem but speak around it with terms like

musty odors and moldy smells. It is not mould or algae. The smell is quite particu-lar to these bacteria and readily identified and is often termed a musty odor. It can withstand temperatures as high as 42 degrees Celsius so a normal wash cycle will not usually touch it. Chlorine bleach is an effective remedy; however, do not use chlorine

bleach with any other product as chlorine gas will result.Often large volume washers lend themselves to overloading and combined with the

small amount of water used simply do not get clothes as clean as the old agitator style washers.

The clothes must tumble to get clean and cant if the machine is too full. We have arecurring brown film on the door seal of our machine that is likely bacterial. Soap

residue is food for these bacteria as are skin particles and it seems just about anything. Liquid fabric softener residue may also provide a medium for these bacteria. I work in

the chemicalbusiness and deal with water treatment in particular.

To bring down a fever, soak a cloth with vinegar and wrap the cloth around the patients feet.

Gently bleach towels and sheets by soaking them in either lemon juice or 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Lay outside on the grass or hang to dry.

To get rid of rust stains in the tub, mix one half cup 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 tsp. cream of tartar; apply to stains. Wait 10 mins. and scrub. Citric acid is also very effective in removing rust stains. Sprinkle onto dampened area. Wait 10 mins. and scrub.

Finding just the right photo frame is not always so hard. There are many places to explore when shopping for a photo frame. Try a specialty store in the mall where there will often be a large variety of frames to choose from, or at least to give you ideas about the kinds you like. Try to select something that captures the mood or feeling you get when you are looking at the photograph itself. These days there is no need to settle for something bland or routine. Camera stores often provide a good, though probably smaller, selection.

You also can search online for picture frames. Picture frames come in many prices and quality levels, so you can be sure to find one in the price range that makes you the most comfortable. They are available in wood, metal, ceramic, resin, acrylic, stone and other materials. Be sure to ask any questions you have. Inquire about shipping and handling and how many days it will take for the picture frame to get to you.

Photo frames should be as beautiful and memorable as the special picture you want to frame, and should last indefinitely into the future. For that reason it makes financial as well as aesthetic sense to select a frame that you will be proud to display in your home over many years. Photos that have been passed down in the family to you will one day continue to your own children and grandchil-dren

Some people may be enthusiastic and skilled enough to make their own frames, but this will require not just materials but tools, time and space to work in as well. This could be a fun project for a couple of family members or friends and include designing and embellishing the final product. Making your own adds a personal touch as well as providing a one-of-a-kind item. For those who know exactly what they want, custom frames can also be ordered, though this will add considerably to the expense.

Sometimes the best frame will be one that allows you to display more than one image at a time. One type is called a floating frame. This type of frame is usually made of glass and does not

have a distinct edging. Instead you can slip one or more photos into the side or top of the frame and see all of them together. Another type is a collage frame with 2 or more separate openings in which to insert your pictures. These may stand on a table or shelf, be hung on a wall or perhaps may be suspended from the ceiling.

Most people just want to have a great frame that will enhance the display of the photo they select. Just spend a little time thinking over the general effect you want, do a little investigation and be ready to select the perfect frame when you come across it. Picking a particular picture frame with an appropriate flair for a specially-chosen photograph as a gift for someone is a personal gesture that most everyone will appreciate. You can count on your recipient to notice the effort you put into choosing just the right one.

    AUTO

    MOTIV

    E

Cars these days seem to have an entire mind of their own. Not only do they keep track of every little detail and thing going on within the car, they also tell you about it. If your car is trying to tell you something, the worst thing that you can do is refuse to pay attention. The warning lights on your dash are there for a reason. All car owners should be able to identify the warning lights and what it is that each of them means. Maintaining your car requires observation and general knowledge. Protecting your investment takes responsible action.

The biggest mistake that one can make when it comes to proper care of their vehicle is to ignore the warning signs that there may be a problem. Quite often these warnings are minor and can come on over things like forgetting to take off your parking brake. But they can also be very detrimental to the life of your car. If there is a serious issue that you overlook, it could come back to haunt you with a vengeance and one heck of a repair bill. Even if a warning light is because of something minor, deal with it right away. Do not make the mistake of putting it off.

There are certain warning lights in your car that may be much more important than others. If the lights for the ABS brakes or airbags come on, you should have the vehicle serviced by a professional immediately. If there is something wrong with either of those components, you need to know about it right away. An airbag that deploys at the wrong time due to a glitch could cause an accident, and it can happen.

The user manual that comes with your vehicle will have a section that shows all of the lights on the dash and what each of them means. It will also be able to give you a clear idea as to how serious the

situation can actually get. It is never worth risking your safety so watch your dash and do not shrug off any lights that come on. If you place your trust in your car and expect it to come through for you, then you must first do your part to take care of it. Even the most expensive cars could have an issue so be aware.

If you know that something is wrong with your car, do not make the mistake of putting it off with the intent of dealing with it later. You need to seek out a certi-fied professional that you trust to handle the situation effectively. Even if you get your car serviced through the dealership, get to know your technician and form a good bond. Though you hope you do not have to see him or her often, it is best to feel comfortable when you do. Make sure to check fluid levels in your car regularly so that they do not lead to a problem. Maintaining your car is all up to you as the owner. Make it worth your while.

Traffic lights were used before the advent of the motorcar. In 1868, British railroad signal engineer J P Knight invented the first traffic light, a lantern with red and green signals. It was installed at the intersection of George and Bridge Streets in front of

the the British House of Commons to control the flow of horse buggies and pedestrians.

Motorcars were introduced to the US in the late 1890s and the need for traffic control soon became obvious. A number of people came up with ideas for traffic control. In 1910, Earnest Sirrine of Chicago, Illinois filed for a patent (no 976,939) for what is considered the first automatic street traffic system, using non illuminated words STOP and PROCEED.

In 1912, Lester Wire of Salt Lake City, Utah invented an electric traffic light that used red and green lights. However, he did not apply for a patent. The next year, James Hoge received patent no 1,251,666 for a manually controlled traffic light system using electric lights. It was installed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914, displaying the words STOP and MOVE.

The first traffic light system to use red and green lights were patented by William Ghiglieri of San Francisco, California in 1917 (patented no 1,224,632). His design could be operated manually or in automatic.

The amber light was added in 1920 by William Potts, a Detroit policeman. He actually invented several traffic light systems, including the overhang four-way system, but did not apply for patents. The first person to apply for a patent to produce inexpensive traffic lights was Garrett Morgan, who received his patent in 1923.

Although his parents were separated when he was still a toddler, he is still very close to both his parents. A fire that burned down his mothers house forced him and his sister, Kelly, to live with Earnhardt Sr. and his new wife, Teresa, while his mother moved to Virginia. Earnhardt Jr. was a bit of a rascal in his younger days so when his father saw fit to send him to military school for two years although, by the time Earnhardt Jr. reached the age of 15, he decided to be like his father.

When he was 17, Earnhardt Jr. managed to pull together $500 after scrimping and saving to buy his first racecar from a junkyard. It was a 1979 Monte Carlo that needed a lot of work. Then he, his half-brother, Kerry, and father worked at fixing it up. His father was only determined to help with rebuilding the racecar and nothing more. Earnhardt Jr. was left on his own devices once he got behind the wheel to learn how to build up his own skills. Once high school was over, Earnhardt Jr. enrolled for a two year course at the Mitchell Community College in North Carolina. He signed up for a course in automotives and during that time, he worked as a mechanic with his father. Word got around quick about his oil changes.

With his co-owned racecar (Kerry had a say in it), Earnhardt Jr. went on to join the Late Model Stock Car division. It was then that he fine tuned his skills and gained more much needed knowledge on cars. One of his competitors then was his sister, Kelley. The only third generation NASCAR champion only began his racing career at age 17. He won the 1998 and 1999 Busch series titles over Matt Kenseth. In 2000, Earnhardt Jr., competed for his first Winston Cup victory. He also wrote a non-fiction book titled DRIVER #8 which was primarily based on his rookie season.

The year after was one of the worst years for Earnhardt Jr. In 2001, he finished second in the 2001 Daytona 500 but his father had crashed in turn four and did not survive. Earnhardt Srs death did visibly shake Earnhardt Jrs demeanor although he did race at Rockingham the following weekend. Eerily enough, he finished at the 43rd place after a wreck that was very similar to the one that his father had perished in the week earlier. Earnhardt Jr. got back on his feet and won more races at Dover, Talladega and Daytona.

In 2002, Earnhardt Jr. had to suffer through a concussion at Fontana in April which resulted in finishing places that were no better than the 30th spot. He did however

bounce back and was able to get two more wins at Talladega as well as a pair of Bud Pole Awards and an 11-th place finish in the standings. In 2003, Earnhardt Jr. was really showing his true nettle when he was awarded the NMPA Most Popular Driver award as well as winning at Phoenix in October. He has gone on to win a great many more championships which, many agree, would have made Earnhardt Sr. proud.

Earnhardt Jr. is not just an excellent racer, he is also a business man. He owns Hammerhead Entertainment which is a media production company and he is also partners with the investors who are currently building the Alabama Motorsports Park, A Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway. He has also made several cameos on music video clips, on radio and several TV shoes and advertisements.

The word vintage is used to describe a lot of things. Quite often it is just used in reference to something that is old or antique. When it comes to defining a vintage car, it is not always so cut and dried. Many people have very conflicting opinions on this and though everyone is entitled to their opinion, they cant all be right. Determining if a car is vintage or not may vary depending what you need the information for, such as insurance. Keep this in mind when you do your research.

For the most part you will find that a vintage car is considered to be one that was manufactured between the years 1919 and 1930. Those cars are incredibly old, some of them among the very first ever made. Even though this is the most common definition, you will likely find that it changes depending on who your source is. In Britain the cut off year is usually 1930. However, in the United States the year end for a vintage car is 1925. According to the Classic Car Club of America this is the era of pre-classic cars. This is just one example of how various the definitions for vintage cars are. You may be left to form your own opinion is some cases.

Some resources may tend to blur the lines between a vintage and a classic automobile. Because some people feel that those two eras overlapped, classic and vintage cars are often grouped together. The designation regard-ing classic vehicles just is not that clear.

It was 1919 when the car first came on the scene as a realistic means of

transport. Of course it took many years for it to become something commonplace that many households were using. That started to change in 1930 which is why some definitions state this is the year end for vintage cars. If your old car falls between these years then it is a pretty safe bet that it is a vintage car.

If you have a serious reason for seeking out this type of information then you may want to seek out a professional opinion. Quite often people will inherit older cars from family or find one at the auction and have no idea what it really is. But if you do not know then you will be unable to verify the real worth and definition of the car. Many people make the mistake of neglecting their old valuables simply because they do not know what they are. Antique dealers may have some valuable information on old cars as well.

You should always have some kind of insurance on your vintage car. Differing agencies will have specific rules and regulations regarding what type of coverage you need based on the age and value of the vehicle. Speak to various agents to see what type of coverage is best for you. You dont want to leave a vintage car unprotected. Seek out advice from a variety of sources if you are trying to define your older car.

However, there are many great reasons to think about getting a cover for your steering wheel. Not only can it add some personality to your vehicle, it can also prevent any damage from the natural wear and tear that occurs on the wheel over time. This type of thing may not seem all that important from a basic perspective, but if you value your car and want your investment to last, it is something that you should have.

Steering wheel covers come in a wide range of prices. You can go to your local Wal-Mart and get a basic one for as low as five dollars. Of course, that is not likely to be the highest quality you can possibly find but it is a start. Steering wheel covers sold on custom sites tend to be much higher in price, up to fifty dollars or possibly more. It really is a matter of choosing the level of steering wheel protection that you desire to have. Buying the cheapest or most expensive cover is not always going to be the best choice.

A steering wheel cover is perfect for adding a little splash of personality to your car. You can choose from a variety of different colors, designs or materials. You can even get some that have custom made designs or your favorite cartoon characters on it. There are many websites that offer steering wheel covers of all kinds. If you are the type of person that loves to dress up your car, a steering wheel cover is a low cost and fun way to do that.

The main reason to get a steering wheel cover is to protect your steering wheel. Many of them are made of leather which can become cracked over time. Also, many newer cars have features and controls right on the wheel. You want to keep them safe so that they will work as long as possible. Some of these control features are incredibly important to the way your car runs and operates. Taking care of them needs to be a priority and if a $25 cover can do that, it is worth it.

Always make sure to measure the size of your steering wheel before you make an order

or buy one at the store. They often are quite tight to begin with and do not have a lot of room for stretching. If you get one that is too small, you will be stuck having to return it. Do not make the mistake of falling for claims that a cover fits all wheels. That cannot possibly be right.

Some steering wheel covers have strategically placed grip for your hands which can make driving much more comfortable. Some covers are even ergonomic which may be preferred by drivers that spend a lot of time in the car. A steering wheel cover is more than an acces-sory. It is a useful item that protects and looks great while doing it.

Pinball machines have a complex history. The roots of the modern-day pinball machines that you use in your local caf come from games such as croquet and billiards, which constitute of guiding a ball to a precise location by hitting them with an instrument. However, the real spiritual ancestor to modern pinball machines was the game of Bagatelle. Developed in France during the 18th century, the game consisted of getting balls into the holes on one side of the board using a stick or a cue. The surface of the board was inclined, and obstacles were set in front of the holes to provide a more challenging experience. Many of these features have been adapted and can be seen in modern pinball machines.

In the 19th century an inventor named Redgrave took the design of the Bagatelle game and improved on it. One of his additions, still visible today, is the plunger: a device which launched the ball up an inclined field. However, once the ball was released from the plunger the user could not interact with the ball further, as flip-

pers for the pinball machine had not yet been developed. This lead to individuals gambling on the outcome the ball would face. As a result, pinball machines were banned in many parts of the United States, including in New York City from 1940 up to 1976. The ban on the machines was ended in a famous case where Roger Sharpe claimed that the balls could be controlled by skill (with the addition of flippers) and were not solely based on luck. On a pinball machine present in the courtroom, he announced where he was going to hit the ball and proceeded to do so successfully.

The 1930s saw much innovation in terms of the design of pinball machines. The machines now included limited electronic functions such as basic sounds and the ability to propel the ball without the users force. Several new features were introduced at this time as well, such as the tilt mechanism and free games. These new features were groundbreaking for those days and sparked a renewed interest in pinball machines. The Humpty-Dumpty pinball machine was the first pinball machine to include flippers. This meant that users could now play a ball for a greater period of time and introduced the whole aspect of skill and controlling the ball while playing pinball.

However, with video games being developed in the 1980s, they were quickly set aside in arcades to make way for the innovation provided by the video game sector. Many companies which had made their fortunes on manufacturing pinball machines were forced to close. It was only in the 1990s that pinball machines made a comeback, bringing exciting innovations to the machines such as a complex displays and sound systems.

Yet the turn of the millennium was a turn for the worse for pinball machines, and the sales reported by many manufactures were falling dramatically. Most manufactures were once again forced to close. Today, Stem Pinball is the only remaining manufacturer in the industry. We will have to wait and see whether they are able to bring innovation to an industry which has had so many ups and downs.

Alfa Spiders have always been considered to be much more than just a vehicle. These cars were produced from the 1960s to the 1990s and they were always available only in limited production numbers. The highest number of these cars produced in any one year was just over 5100. This rarity added to the allure and mystique that always accompanied the Alfa Romeo name. The Alfa Spider Veloce convertible that was marketed in 1992 remains a favorite for many today and when one is advertised for sale it will not stay on the market very long.

These exquisitely crafted machines have always been regarded as being special Italian racing cars. They come with an illustrious pedigree and an automotive DNA history rich with speed, luxury and dashing looks. To own one of these cars has brought an owner a certain amount of cachet and to drive one has been a privilege of some and a fantasy of many sports car enthusiasiasts around the world. The 1992 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce is one of the rarities in this famous line of automobiles because it has clout, speed and visual appeal to both sexes of all ages.

Beginning with the earliest Alfa Romeo cars their reputation was described as a sports car for gentlemen and was not considered the type of vehicle that one would take slogging about in the forests or on off road tracks. Ideally one would not subject the Alfa Romeo cars to rough handling or excessive speeds just for the sake of showing off in front of others. These cars were pampered and coddled by their owners and were known to be a bit a bit balky and petulant if maintenance or care was neglected or postponed. Given proper consideration and treatment the Alfa Romeo would deliver a quality ride to a gentle and generous owner or driver.

The sexy sleek lines of the dashing Alfa Romeo had always attracted attention and the 1992 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce was certainly no exception. The chassis of these cars have a uni-body design that has proven to be extremely durable and imparts a particular elegance to the feel and handling of this automobile. When you factored in the lightweight, aerodynamic build of the car, the high tech engineering design and the flashy look of the vehicle it was easy to see why drivers from many countries lusted after them. Even the price tag placed on the vehicles was very affordable, especially when compared with many other luxury sports cars from Italy, Germany or even the United States.

When the 1992 models were placed on the market they were greeted by an enthusiastic group of sports car lovers. The interior and dash components were covered with real leather in the upscale Veloce

vehicle, although there were some suede accents made for inserts in both the seats and the doors. The base units of the same year had only vinyl covering for their seats. The small amount of plastic that was used in the interior dash components was well constructed and very little cracking was seen, even today, many years after the original manufacturing date.

These 1992 Spider Veloce models came with toneau covers made of leather and they also had canvas tops that were surprisingly resilient in many different kinds of weather. Mechanically these speedsters were cars that you could rely upon to get you where you needed to be with style and elegance to spare. The engines were twin overhead cams with four cylinders and although regular maintenance was a mandatory for the best performance, the engines in these cars were amazingly easy to work on.

The last of any major changes to the Spider car line came with the Series 4 line up that lasted from 1990 through 1993/94. The largest of the

design differences was in the mechanics of the car. An electronic Bosch Motronic fuel injection unit was installed complete with its own electric fan. The Spider also had the spoiler removed from under the front bumper as well as the spoiler that usually graced the top of the trunk. New lights were installed in the back of the vehicle and they stretched the entire width of the rear end. The physical changes to the North American models began in 1991 and they included power steering, new plastic bumpers, driver airbags and the loss of the beloved spoilers.

There were two choices of Spider convertible created by the Alfa Romeo Company. The base model and the upscale Veloce roadster were the options available. There were not many differences in these cars. The Veloce vehicle had leather seats instead of the vinyl units and slightly larger wheels. The Spider Veloce model had 15 alloy wheels with special hubcaps. If you selected the upgraded vehicle you also received great air conditioning units and a canvas top as standard equipment. In 1992 almost 4000 of these cars were made and sold in Europe and North America and today collectors avidly seek them out and will pay top dollar for an original 1992 Spider Veloce vehicle in mint, or nearly mint, condition. In order to get to the fun part of owning a horse, one that you can take with you on trail rides or let your friends ride, you must first put in the training necessary to make him calm and agreeable in any situation. Its always great to find an older horse that is already kid safe but in the event you cant find or afford such a horse there are some things you can do to train your horse for trail or competition.

A spooky horse is no fun at all to ride as you are constantly worried that he will jump at the slightest sound or movement and you will end up with your backside on the ground looking up. A great partnership with your horse starts from his trust of his owner. Spend as much time with your horse as you can and get the groundwork in so that trust is built. Groundwork is the time and training you put in to your horse. It is the basics of horse training to work with a horse on the ground before even getting in the saddle. Daily grooming and working with your horse in different situations forms a bond or trust with your horse. You must become his lead horse. Trust is invaluable as there are times when you need your horse to overcome his natural instincts to flee when he feels threatened. If your horse trusts you to keep him safe, he will ignore his instincts and re-main calm. Take your time when grooming him and adopt a firm but fair attitude when handling him so that he learns to respect you as his herd leader.

One good way to help your horse react dif-ferently to situations is to take him out with a seasoned kid safe horse that stays calm

under all conditions. When a horse sees and feels that another horse is not concerned or spooked at every paper bag blowing in the wind or scary leaves blowing around, then it helps him to realize that the world isnt quite as scary as he thought.

If your horse is scared of certain things, then make sure you expose it to him every day until he is completely comfortable around it. For example you can tie plastic bags to the fence and let them flap in the breeze. Then keep taking your horse past the bags every day as part of his training to NOT be afraid of things that are moving around him when hes under saddle. Fear is the main thing that drives a horse. The point is to make him comfortable with as many things as possible on an every day basis. Your horse can over-come 90% of all the outside influences that you can come up with and eventually even more.

Most people begin to learn how to play tennis by watching tennis matches on television. They will learn about the scoring system used in the tennis matches and learn how to differentiate between one tennis racquet brand and another. Over time, they will also know the different playing styles of every tennis player on the circuit and some they will be able to identify on sight with their full name. They might concentrate very intently on each ball service because each player seems to have a different serving style.

It is common to see children playing alone outside with a racquet and a ball. They are learning to play tennis by practicing their serve on a concrete wall. They might realize that tennis requires them to run more quickly than they initially thought, and by the end of the day they are ready to go to bed early because they are extremely tired. The next day that they practice tennis in this manner, they might be more willing to pace themselves in their tennis training.

The local library has many sources of information that people can use to gain knowledge about the game of tennis. There are sports magazines and internet sites with plenty of information to read, hear and visualize, as well as an unlimited number of videos that people can rent to view when they have some free time during the day. All of these news sources will be verified and children find this information resource invaluable when they join a tennis team at school.

A tennis player can learn all about the world of tennis

by studying how to become a professional in the sport and by following the career trail of players who have played professionally for many years. They might even learn where the tennis courts are in their hometown so they can practice volleying the ball over an actual net.

Many neighborhood apartment complexes install tennis courts to lure in the right crowd. Any tenant that has the energy to play tennis will generally have a proactive lifestyle. Neighbors can spend many hours on the tennis court getting exercise just to keep fit. While they are busying themselves by learning tennis, they will generally stay out of trouble and spread good cheer among other residents who live there.

Some parents might be willing to sign a child up for a lessons at a local tennis center. Learning the game from someone that has perfected their craft is generally the best way to learn it. The tennis centers will have regulation courts where people can learn to serve the tennis ball with precision and returning the ball several times after that will be what their formal training in tennis will perfect.

People get inspired to learn tennis by buying tennis outfits and equipment. The salesmen at a sports equipment outlet will be a good guide to make sure they have everything they need. When learning to play tennis, only the basic equipment needs to be purchased. Players can move on to more expensive styles in racquets after their tennis training has been completed.About the Author: Written by James Brown James Brown writes about SportsFanfare.com on-line cou-pons, FansEdge.com coupons and Fathead coupons Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=211551&ca=Sports

Since the earliest fisherman plucked fish from the water with their bare hands, anglers have found many different methods of fishing. Fly fishing is one of the oldest and has been in existence for hundreds of years. Believed to have begun during Roman times, the advanced methods of fly fishing are considered to have developed in Scotland and England. With improved reels, line and fly gear fly fishing has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds.

Originally, fly fishing was mainly used to catch trout and salmon, which are easily fooled by artificial flies. However, many species of fish are now being targeted by fans of sport fishing using dry and wet flies. Today the lines are heavier and larger in diameter. As a result there is a need for a larger reel that is required to hold that size of line. Anglers now research the local water life to determine the best

colors and styles of flies that may be able to attract the local fish population.

The main purpose of fly fishing is to offer an artificial fly to the fish that will closely resemble an insect or bug that is native to the area. Curious fishermen may spend a lot of time researching the types of bugs that flourish in the region as well as spending time studying the types of fish and how they approach their victims.

Practice, Practice, Practice, It Takes A lot of Practice to Properly Cast Flies

For the fisherman switching from bait fishing to fly fishing there is a conversion period in which they must learn the difference. With bait casting, the weight of the lure and bait draws line from the reel, and extends out into the water. When fly fishing the line is cast into the water and the fly on the line follows the line into the water. It requires a lot of practice and concentration to place the line that is cast from the reel and having the fly land in the desired spot on the surface of the water.

The two main types of lures used in fly fishing are the dry fly that remains on the surface and the wet fly that is designed to sink once it hits the water. Other flies, called emerging flies partially submerge under the water, to duplicate the action of emerging insects from their larva stage.

Fly fishing requires the fisherman to adjust to local conditions as well as altering their technique depending on the time of day and time of year. It will take the fly fisherman a lot of practice and patience to develop the skills necessary to consistently catch fish.

    Making Your Own Flies

After a fly fisherman has mastered the difficult techniques of fly fishing he may want to design his own flies. It is a wonderful hobby. A master fly maker can build up quite a collection. A beautiful as well as effective fly can be a rewarding creation.

Whether you create your own flies or become an avid collector, the art of fly fishing can grow on you and become almost an addiction.

The Sargasso Sea is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between the West Indies and the Azores, covering some 3 million square kilometres (2 million square miles). Jules Verne wrote about it in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

The Sargasso Sea is encircled by the The Gulf Stream and the North Equatorial Current, causing the oval-shaped sea to move in a slow, clockwise drift. The water is exceptionally blue, with a high salt content.

Its warm waters are exceptionally clear and blue, and filled with seaweed. Early naviga-tors becalmed in the seas still waters mistakenly believed their ships were tangled in the seaweed. They named the sea sargaco, the Portuguese word for grape, after the seaweeds bulbous floats.

The Sargasso Sea is also known as the floating desert. Although about

one-third of the Atlantics plankton is produced here, the Sargassum lacks the nutrients to attract commercially valuable fish. But many small marine animals, including tiny crabs, shrimp and octopuses, live on and among the sargassum, the rootless weed. Deeply connected to the weeds, many would sink and perish if they lost their grip. The Sargasso Sea is 5km (3 miles) deep, thus the sargassum grow by budding.

The Sargasso also is an international meeting place for eels. Drawn by unknown forces, the snakelike fish come from Europe, the Mediterranean and the United States to mate, spawn and die. From there, their larvae make the long journey back to continental waters.

The telescope was first used by the early astronomers to observe the sky, and to discover new celestial bodies.Telescopes were instrumental in the advancement of science and in the development of newer and more efficient ways of observing celestial phenomena, such as the suns activities, the planets movement around the solar system, and the moons waxing and waning. It took a long time before modern science was able to device technologies that would supersede the usefulness of the telescope. Even upon the advent of the Hubble Space Telescope, refracting telescopes are still very useful for astronomers and budding scientists, in their quests to understand the nature of the universe, and the Earths place in it.

Now, there are two general categories for telescopes that are optical- first is the refracting-type telescope, and the second is the reflecting-type telescope. What is a refracting telescope? A refracting telescope has three general parts (which means, no matter how modern a refracting telescope is, it would still have these main parts as foundation for other parts): the telescope tube, the objective lens and the eye piece lens. The simplest explanation for a refracting telescope would be this: a refracting telescope is composed of two lenses that are convex, which are generally more thick in the very center than at the edges. This design allows colors and light to be focused more clearly and transmitted more efficiently to the eye piece lens.

The part of the telescope that is more near to the object being observed (may it be a turtle, a star or someone in a far away window) is called the objective lens. What happens technically is that this particular lens collects the color and light from a particular source, and takes focuses this as an image that is upside down inside the tube of the telescope. In simpler telescopes, the images remain inverted; but in the more modern versions, the images can be righted by

special lenses inside the telescope. Other modern versions of the telescope also have recording de-vices located near the eye piece lens, so you may be able to record the things that you are observing. These types of telescopes are useful especially if you like observing meteor showers, and other types of celestial phenomena that dont visibly happen very often in the worlds open skies.

Reflecting telescopes, on the other hand, utilize a different type of lens. Instead of having a convex lens, reflecting telescopes have a curved lens that were specifically crafted to bring back and magnify images. The power of a reflecting telescope to gather and focus light from a source can be achieved by increasing the area of the reflecting telescopes mirror. Large reflecting telescopes that may be found in astronomical installations were built specifically to observe the skies twenty four hours a day.

About the Author: Written by Jesse McKenna Jesse McKenna is an telescope enthusiast of 12 years. For more in-formation on telescopes, check out the telescope buying guide and stargazing tips at The Telescope. Article source: http://www.isnare.com/?aid=295712&ca=Recreation

Whats a telescope? Generally speaking, a telescope is a device that magnifies the degree of visibility of far away objects, making these objects more amenable to observation.
