Learning objectives

By the end of today’s lesson all of you will:Know the difference between a primary and a

secondary effect (impact)Compare the primary and secondary impacts of

two earthquakes Explain how and why the effects of earthquakes

in the developed and developing world differ Keywords: Primary effect, secondary effect ,

aftershocks

Page 4: Comparing the effects of two earthquakes at contrasting locations

Keywords

• Primary effects – caused instantly by the earthquake or volcanoe

• Secondary effects – happen in the hours, days and weeks after the earthquake or volcano

Page 5: Comparing the effects of two earthquakes at contrasting locations

Starter

• Sort the cards out into primary and secondary impacts (effect) of earthquakes and volcanoes

• Extension: which of these belong to earthquakes and which to volcanoes? Can some cards belong to both?

Page 6: Comparing the effects of two earthquakes at contrasting locations

Two case studies

• In this exam we need to know case studies in order to be able to answer the longer question.

• This means that we need to know actual facts about the event.

Your turn

• Using your textbook you will be comparing two earthquakes:

The Kobe earthquake in Japan in 1995 (page 20-21)The Earthquake in Sichuan, China in 2008(page 22-23)

You will be presenting your findings in the form of a table.

Why are people in the developing world at greater risk from tectonic hazards than people in the developing world?

• In pairs, write down your ideas

Page 10: Comparing the effects of two earthquakes at contrasting locations

Why are people in the developing world more vulnerable to tectonic hazards? • They often live in risky locations because they

have no choice• They can’t afford safe, well-built houses and

buildings often collapse• They don’t have insurance• Their governments don’t have the money and

resources to provide aid • Communications are poor, so warning and

evacuation may not happen

Exam question

Using an example, outline the impact of a major earthquake on people and property in the

developing world (4 marks)

Restriction - you need to use a case study and give specific detail about that case study

Command word Topic

Page 12: Comparing the effects of two earthquakes at contrasting locations

Peer Assess There was an earthquake with magnitude of 8.0 in Sichuan, China in 2008. (opening sentence) Over 70 000 people died and many were made homeless when poorly built houses in rural areas collapsed.

Landslides made the rescue effort very difficult and rescue teams from other countries had to assist in looking for survivors.
