Power QualitySimply stated, we are in the power quality business. No matter how good the power quality is when generated and distributed, something always goes wrong.

That’s where we step in with solutions to correct the problem.

What are the major causes of poor power quality?According to PG&E approximately 80% of all power quality problems originate from the customer’s side of the meter. Stuff going on inside your own facility can be a major contributor to problems that show up as:

• Processing Errors• Soft failures such as computer reset or lockout• Hard failures of electronic components• Nuisance tripping in process control equipment

Environmental factors also have a major impact on power quality

Environmental Factors

Page 14: Company: Staco Solutions and Applications

Although external factors, including environmental, contribute to only 20% of the power quality problems, we find that the most severe and difficult problems to solve come from these external influences.

Large transient spikes, swells, momentary dips, brownout and blackout conditions will all be seen when these external factors are in effect.

Internal Problems - Harmonics Why Are High Harmonics Bad?

• Higher operating temperatures in transformers and motors• High neutral current flow in three phase systems• Motor failures due to torsional oscillations in the motor shaft• Overheating in building wiring

Standards have been developed that limit the total harmonic distortion that a user can reflect back onto the power grid. This is to prevent the bad waveforms caused by equipment at one utility customer from affecting neighboring customers.

Causes Of High HarmonicsHarmonics are caused by loads that draw a non-sinusoidal current from a sinusoidal voltage source. Some examples are:• Arc Furnaces• Various types of AC/DC converters• Power supplies• AC and DC motor drives

Internal Problems - Displacement Power FactorWhy Is Power Factor Bad?

In an electric power system, a load with a power factor less than unity (1.0) draws more current than a load with a unity power factor for the same amount of useful power transferred. The higher currents increase the energy lost in the distribution system, and require larger wires and other equipment. Because of the costs of larger equipment and wasted energy, electrical utilities will usually charge a higher cost to industrial or commercial customers where there is a poor power factor.

Causes Of Displacement Power Factor

Displacement power factor is caused by loads that include inductive or capacitive elements.

• The most common problem is lagging power factor caused by inductive elements• The most common cause is the induction motor when it is not being operated

at its full load rating. Conveyor systems that are not fully loaded, circular saws, air compressors, injection molding machines are all examples of motor driven equipment where the motor spends a lot of time running under light or no load, creating poor power factor.

Staco Product Solutions To These Problems

• Variable based products – Voltage control and regulation• Active Harmonic Filter – Reduces harmonics to acceptable levels• Power Factor Correction – Monitor and adjust for poor power factor• UPS Systems – All of the above, plus replaces the utility during a

blackout

Staco products are found in medical, commercial and industrial settings covering a wide range of uses.

Page 24: Company: Staco Solutions and Applications

Our variable based products are found in commercial broadcast applications providing voltage regulation to the transmitter. They are also found in production facilities and test labs that require regulated voltage, or the ability to adjust the voltage.

Power factor correction products can be found in many settings. Factories using motors are the most common uses of this product.

Page 26: Company: Staco Solutions and Applications

Many of our Active Harmonic Filters find their way into wastewater treatment plants where large motors are used to run the pumps.

UPS products provide clean regulated power to loads of all types and provide emergency backup power from internal batteries whenever the utility fails.

Diagnostic imaging equipment similar to that shown here is being backed up by our P Series UPS at many hospitals using Philips imaging products.

Adapting our equipment for outdoor application is very common. Here we have installed two of our FLU Series UPS products into a NEMA 3 enclosure for installation at Keesler AFB.

In 2013 we sold a large UPS order to Raytheon for a new facility they built to support government contracts. Pictured here are parallel PL Series 30Kva UPS and accessory equipment.
