a little HiStoryFirst General Services (Winnipeg) Ltd. was incorporated in 1990, and became the first insurance restoration specialist in Manitoba to offer computer-generated estimating to the insurance industry.
With modest beginnings, First General started out in a 6500 square foot, one-storey building in Winnipeg’s Fort Garry Industrial Park. Within months, substantial renovations were underway to accommodate the growing business and the expanded building was to remain First General’s home for over 22 years.
After celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, First General proudly took possession of a brand new building at 125 Fennell Street just a few short blocks from the original location.
The Fireline Systems work on the same basis as an assembly line, with damaged hard goods unloaded carefully and organized into the same groupings as they came from the scene. Fireline’s various stages include pre-rinse stations, pre-wash tanks, ultrasonic tanks, rinse and detail stations and finally a tunnel dryer unit—all before wrapping and packaging the restored items takes place. The Fireline Electronics Restoration System is a high-tech, two-part process where electronics—such as computers, monitors, keyboards, televisions, DVD players, microwaves and air conditioners—are taken apart and cleaned inside and out. The system first uses pressurized de-ionized water and detergent before deodorizing and drying in a specialized chamber.
The Esporta System has revolutionized the industry in the washing of soft contents. The equipment is only operated by certified staff that can successfully clean and restore over 80 per cent of fire and sewage-damaged goods. Esporta’s equipment sets a new standard for restoring textiles and soft contents with an advanced washing technology many times more effective than traditional laundry systems.
In addition, First General’s new location has a total of eight service bay doors to facilitate large scale emergencies and restoration scenarios.

training anD certiFicationSThe owner of First General, project managers and estimators, and several of the water and fire technicians are trained and certified in all areas of restoration work, with Master Water Restorer and Master Fire and Smoke Restorer designations for some.
In addition, certification and training in mould remediation, asbestos abatement, applied structural drying and large loss commercial drying, are just a few areas of expertise that keep the company ahead of its competition. First General’s large inventory of over 200 pieces of dehumidification and deodorization equipment—plus several other specialized restoration machines—puts the company at the forefront of their field.
