Jaker PO was established by some non-governmental organizations that have concern to organic farming progress in Indonesia; they met in Yogyakarta on 10th September 1998 to declare the network that so called as Jaker PO (Jaringan Kerja Pertanian Organik Indonesia – Indonesian organic farming network). There are 48 organizations involved as members and many supporting organizations and partners to promote organic farming in Indonesia.
Jaker PO as a network organization is a supporting system for the members and partners to implement activities on grassroots levels of the members, campaigner, policy advocacy and program coordinating to all members. Jaker PO works for members and partners in all Indonesia, we have 48 active members and some that have different projects in agriculture. Since 2005 the membership is open not only for non-governmental organization and farmer groups, but also for private sectors. This is how to accelerate organic movement in Indonesia. The members are spread in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Java, Bali, NTB, we are calling mostly from eastern part of Indonesia becoming our member. Members in Sumatera Island mostly work for coffee, herbs and rice production, members in Java, Bali and NTB working on rice and vegetables, in NTT (west timor) partners working for cacao, cashew, coffee. It also depend on the situation of the area what kind of product to develop and what issue should be overcome. They are also working from cultivation, post harvest, market and consumer awareness. Many are working on campaign, policy interventions and other advocacy models.

Jaker PO develops standard on organic formulated based on IFOAM principles on organic. The standard is developed according to the capacity and environment in Indonesia. This is to help farmers to accommodate the environment and product to meet general standard of Jaker PO. Most farmers involved in Jaker PO are small farmers so we are not in position to promote organic certification, especially for staple foods. We promote the standard to farmers and also consumers so that both sides are aware that we are producing healthy products and respect the environment.

The motivation to establish Jaker PO is to unite all movements on organic farming issues. Gathering NGOs, farmer groups and private sectors to work together at their areas and combine it as a campaign and advocacy in different levels. We are aware that it will promote natural conservation and establish healthy community in rural and consumers. We are aware that organic farming is becoming trend in Indonesia and other part of the planet. Jaker PO does not follow the trend; it is more about creating awareness to producers on how to produce healthy foods and to consumers to consume healthy foods either. We are establishing connection among farmers, environment, consumers and policy in agriculture. We are hoping that are able to work together with different sectors to help farmers regain their traditional knowledge and skills in agriculture practices. With many organizations across the archipelagos, we are hoping that Jaker PO is able to act as a network organization to develop activities together with farmers, gathering strength to influence policy, campaign and promotion. Jaker PO is a support system to the organic farming movement in local and national levels.
1) Improving credibility of Jaker PO internal and externally 2) Widening support to organic farming development in grassroot level. 3) Empowering support to organic farming movement and policy that give benefit
to small farmers and peasants.

Jaker PO has a function as to support a syetem that pro active to organic farming movement in Indonesia.
The creation of natural harmony and civil society that has sovereignty, independent, democratic, gender equity and sustainable.
Supporting social efforts to develop Indonesian organic communities based on local resources that have gender perspectives.
Organic farming that produces healthy foods for farmer’s households and consumers by promoting fairness, gender equity and harmony with nature to all farmers and consumers in Indonesia.
As a national network that has members in locals, Jaker PO does not work directly with farmers on the farm. However, Jaker PO may invite farmers for capacity building and other activities that involve farmers from different areas. Jaker PO works together with local partner and members to implement activities within the area. This is how the system works so that we are able to empower each other. During the implementation of a project, Jaker PO emphasizes to meet some criteria such as gender equity, respect the environment, local wisdoms, opportunities to all, fair and openness.

Jaker PO develop organic farming to maintain nature harmony where all creatures may stay on their original places and conserve the nature, Jaker PO respects environmental balance by eco friendly approach.
Gender justice is the focus of program implementation of Jaker PO. The gender sensitive promoted during the planning, implementation and evaluation of the projects to work with members and partners. This is because in many areas, agriculture overrides the role of women by giving more burdens without giving authority involvement in decision making. Gender sensitive is the main requisite in program implementation.
Jaker PO supports local community to involve in developing OA with their knowledge, skills and traditional wisdoms. The local community members have bigger portion in involvement whereas individuals and organization from outside act as supporting system to the development of OA in the area.
Jaker PO gathers individuals from members and other institutions that have expertise in organic farming and other issues. The farmer groups and members are able to take advantage from their expertise and the support will be delivered to nearest area of the members and external organizations as they know the local tradition and languages. This is an asset for Jaker PO to develop organic farming in different areas. Even the secretariat only have some staffs, we are utilizing our members to implement the program.
Jaker PO assists members to open market deal with other parties if they need support from the secretariat, such as business consultation, product standard, market access etc.

Food chains, commonly discussed until marketing, however, we belief that consumer awareness is the essential part to connect producers to consumers. Local consumer awareness has proved the sustainability of market for producers and creates respect from consumers to producers. Consumers are aware to environment protections, healthy products, and fair trade activities.
As a network organization, Jaker PO needs to have wider network with other institutions in local, national, regional and international to support each other. The networking is for similar issues and different ones that have connection to OA development.
We develop some publications such as books, newsletter and campaign materials. There are also some electronic publications to reach more people on the web and e-mails.
As a network that has many stakeholders, Jaker PO send report annual program and financial report to members. The Steering Committee monitors and evaluates the programs. There is dynamic consultation and discussion between secretariat and steering committee members to discuss certain policy to take during ongoing activities within the secretariat. Jaker PO has internal and external audit system to keep transparent the financial report.
