1. Safety Precautions

All users of the ExiSpin must read the Safety Precautions section of this manual before attempting to operate the unit. Please be advised that a safety alert symbol accompanied by the signal word CAUTION will be found. The symbol is defined as follows:

Warning of proper safety practices.

Use only as specified by this manual or the intrinsic protection may be impaired.

Keep this manual in a safe place as it contains important safety information and operating instructions.

Do not expose to water or moisture. If exposed to moisture during transport or storage, dry out the unit for 2 to 3 hours before connecting it to the power supply. Drying out the instrument is imperative to preserving the intrinsic protection.

Connect only to a power supply with a voltage corresponding to that on the serial number label (115V AC, 24VAC, 1.25A).

Ensure that the main switch and isolating device (power supply connector) are easily accessible during use.

Do not use a power supply unit other than the unit supplied with the instrument.

Before moving, disconnect the power supply socket.

Do not operate the unit outside the laboratory premises.

Do not operate the unit with explosive or flammable chemical mixtures.

Do not place anything on top of the unit exceeding 0.2 kg.

Do not expose the unit to extreme hot or cold temperatures.

Do not expose the unit to open flames.

Do not allow objects to fall on or liquids to spill on the unit.

If liquid is spilled inside the unit, disconnect it from the power supply and have it serviced.

Do not use any cleaning or decontamination method except those recommended by the manufacturer.

Do not in any way attempt to tamper or repair the unit, doing so will void the warranty and may damage the system. This product does not contain consumer serviceable components, all repairs or services should be performed by the Authorized Service Center.

Always load the unit evenly. To keep the vortex balanced, insert an even number of equally filled tubes into opposite sockets on the rotor.

2. General Information ExiSpin is a revolutionary vortexer/microfuge for everyday laboratory tasks. The ExiSpin is a unique product that automates the onerous task of vortexing and mixing samples. Once you try the ExiSpin, you will find it is an essential instrument for your laboratory. The ExiSpin comes complete with rotors for 4 x 8-strip tubes and 12 x 1.5/2.0 ml tubes. Use it for mini preps, to resuspend oligos, to set up your PCR reactions, or any task that requires vortexing in micro test tubes or 0.2 ml PCR tubes. The ExiSpin works by allowing the customer to program the required number of Spin/Vortex/Spin cycles (SVS algorithm), as well as the duration for each cycle. The time and strength of the centrifugation/mixing cycle can be programmed. The repetition numbers for the spin-vortex-spin steps can also be set for up to 999 cycles. The ExiSpin is four devices combined in one (depending on the mode of operation):

- Multi-tube centrifuge (speed and time setting) - Multi-tube vortex (3 different levels – low, medium, or high with adjustable time settings) - Multi-tube centrifuge/vortex - Centrifuge/vortex/centrifuge cycler using the SVS algorithm

3. Getting Started

Unpacking Remove packing materials carefully and retain for future shipment or storage of the unit. The complete set includes:

ExiSpin 1 piece

Rotor 2 pieces (SR-32 for 4 x 8-strip tubes and R-1.5 for 12 x 1.5/2.0 ml tubes)

External power supply unit 1 piece

Tightening pin 1 piece

Instruction manual 1 copy Installation

1. Place the ExiSpin on a horizontal working surface. It is necessary to observe the safety area of 3 cm around the ExiSpin in accordance with EN-61010-2-2.

2. Hazardous materials should be kept clear of the ExiSpin while it is in operation. 3. Connect the power cord to the ExiSpin and the power supply.

Rotor replacement

1. Insert the provided pin into the opening into the threaded nut (Figure 1. 1). 2. Hold the rotor with one hand and turn the tightening pin (use the tightening pin as a lever) counter

clockwise to set rotor free. 3. Change the rotor and firmly attach the threaded nut. Ensure tight fit but do not over tighten.

4. Operation The ExiSpin can be operated in 2 different modes – standard preset or advanced mode. To switch between the modes, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds.

A. Advanced Mode The ExiSpin can be operated in 2 different modes – advanced or standard preset mode. To switch between the modes, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds. You can program the followings in the advanced mode:

A custom SVS cycle

A centrifugation only operation with different speed and time settings

A vortexing only operation with different strength and time settings [Program custom SVS cycle]

1. Check that the power supply corresponds to that on the manufacturer’s rating label, then connect the power cord to the ExiSpin and the power outlet.

2. The control panel will turn on and the lid will unlock as the unit is turned on.

3. If the display panel is not shown as Figure 2. below, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds to access the advanced mode.

4. Program a custom SVS cycle using the control panel as follows:

- Centrifugation speed - Centrifugation timer - Vortexing mode - Vortexing timer - Cycle number

Centrifugation speed indicator: Press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the centrifugation speed from

1,000 to 3,500 in 100 rpm increments.

Centrifugation timer: Press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the centrifugation time up to 30 minutes

in one minute increments (1 second increments for times between 0 and 1 minute).

Vortexing mode indicator: Press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the vortexing mode, Hard, Medium,

or Soft. Vortexing timer: Press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the vortexing time up to 20 seconds in one

second increments.

Cycle number indicator: Press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the cycle number up to 999 in one

cycle increments.

Status indicator: OPEN, STOP, or RUN will be displayed depending on the status of the unit.

- OPEN will be shown when the lid is open. - STOP will be shown when the lid is closed and rotor is stopped. - RUN will be shown when the ExiSpin is in operation.

5. Open the lid and place micro tubes or tube strips into the rotor. Place an even number of the tubes to be spun down in the rotor to ensure the ExiSpin is balanced. If the unit is not balanced, it will automatically stop so you can adjust the tube placement.

6. Press the Run/Stop button to start the programmed cycle.

Note: Pressing the Run/Stop button while the unit is in operation will completely stop, not pause, the operation. Pressing the Run/Stop button again will start the programmed cycle from the beginning.

[Program centrifugation only operation with different settings]

1. Check that the power supply corresponds to that on the manufacturer’s rating label, then connect the power cord to the ExiSpin and the power outlet.

2. The control panel will turn on and the lid will unlock as the unit is turned on.

3. If the display panel is not shown as Figure 2. below, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds to access the advanced mode.

4. Press the P1/Select button. As starts flashing, use ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the centrifugation

speed from 1,000 to 3,500 in 100 rpm increments. Press the P1/Select button again to move onto .

5. As starts flashing, use ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the centrifugation time to up to 30 minutes in

one minute increments (1 second increments for times between 0 and 1 minute). Press the P1/Select

button twice to move onto .

6. As starts flashing, press ▼ arrow button until OFF sign appears to turn off the vortex. The OFF sign

will also appear on ⑤ the status indicator.

7. Open the lid and place micro tubes or tube strips into the rotor. Place an even number of the tubes to be spun down in the rotor to ensure the ExiSpin is balanced. If the unit is not balanced, it will automatically stop so you can adjust the tube placement.

7. Press the Run/Stop button to start the programmed cycle.

8. Press the Run/Stop button to repeat the programmed cycle as needed. [Program vortexing only operation with different settings]

1. Check that the power supply corresponds to that on the manufacturer’s rating label, then connect the

power cord to the ExiSpin and the power supply.

2. The control panel will turn on and the lid will unlock as the unit is turned on.

3. If the display panel is not shown as Figure 2. below, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds to access the advanced mode.

4. Press the P1/Select button to get to . As starts flashing, use press ▼ arrow button until OFF sign

appears to turn off the centrifuge. The OFF sign will also appear on ⑤ the status indicator. Press the

P1/Select button again to move onto .

5. As starts flashing, use ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the vortexing mode, Hard, Medium, or Soft.

Press the P1/Select button to move onto .

6. As starts flashing, press ▲ and ▼ arrow buttons to adjust the vortexing time.

tubes to be spun down in the rotor to ensure the ExiSpin is balanced. If the unit is not balanced, it will automatically stop so you can adjust the tube placement.

7. Press the Run/Stop button to start the programmed cycle.

8. Press the Run/Stop button to repeat the programmed cycle as needed.

B. Standard Preset Mode Three sets of SVS cycle are pre-programmed in the standard preset mode. Each SVS cycle is consists of:

Spin for 10 seconds at 2,500 rpm

Vortex for 150 seconds in a hard mode

Spin for 10 seconds at 2,500 rpm Perform the following steps in the order described to operate in the standard preset mode.

1. Check that the power supply corresponds to that on the manufacturer’s rating label, then connect the power cord to the ExiSpin and the power outlet.

2. The control panel will turn on and the lid will unlock as the unit is turned on.

3. If the display panel is not shown in Figure 3. below, press and hold the P1/Select button for 8 seconds to access the standard preset mode.

Progression bar: Every set of three squares represents one SVS (Spin Vortex Spin) cycle. A

flashing square indicates the current step and will darken when the step is complete.

Centrifugation/Vortexing timer: This will display the remaining centrifugation or vortexing time of each

step.

Status indicator: OPEN, STOP, or RUN will be displayed depending on the status of the unit.

- OPEN will be shown when the lid is open. - STOP will be shown when the lid is closed and rotor is stopped. - RUN will be shown when the ExiSpin is in operation.

4. Open the lid and place micro tubes or tube strips into the rotor. Place an even number of the tubes to be spun down in the rotor to ensure the ExiSpin is balanced. If the unit is not balanced, it will automatically stop so you can adjust the tube placement.

5. Close the lid.

6. Press the Run/Stop button to start the SVS cycles.

7. After the first cycle is completed (the first three squares become dark), the ExiSpin will stop.

8. Open the lid, make necessary adjustments and close the lid.

9. Repeat steps 4 through 6 to start the second SVS cycle.

10. Repeat steps 4 through 6 to start the third SVS cycle.

After the third cycle is completed, the ExiSpin will go into sleep mode for 2 hours. The sleep mode is necessary to ensure maximum lifetime performance. During the sleep mode, the unit will not respond to any input commands. Do not disconnect its power supply during the sleep mode.

11. Open the lid to take tubes out. It is recommended to leave the lid open during the sleep mode. The control panel and display of the default standard preset mode will be on when the sleep mode is over.

If you unplug the power supply before the sleep mode is complete, an error message “ERROR! PROCESS IS NOT COMPLETE.” will be displayed when you re-connect the power supply to the unit. Press the Run/Stop button to return back to the standard preset mode.

6. Technical Maintenance

1. It is allowed to perform the maintenance and all types of repair operations only to the persons who have

done a special training.

2. Cleaning. Standard ethanol (75%) or any other cleaning liquids can be used for cleaning and disinfecting of the device, if it does not contain any strong organic solvents such as acetone, toluene or benzene.

7. Warranty and Reclamation Information The Manufacturer warrants the compliance of ExiSpin with the requirements of Specifications, provided the consumer follows the operation, storage and transportation requirements. The warranted service life of ExiSpin from the date of delivery to the Customer is 24 months. If any manufacturing defects are discovered by the customer, an unsatisfactory – equipment report shall be compiled, certified and sent to the local distributor address.
