Ngunit noong February 9,

Ayonsa Comelec record, Mitra filed his certificate of candidacyfor Governor of Palawan on November 28, 2009.

Bunga nito, lahat ngresidente ng naturang siyudad ay hindi na eligible to votefor candidates for elective provincial officials such as: Gov-ernor, Vice-Governor and members of the SangguniangPanlalawigan.

Ibinase ng Comelec ang desisyong idiskwalipika si Mitrasa 1928 decision ng Supreme Court sa Nuval vs. Guray case the Supreme Court has already ruled that the term resi-dence as so used is synonymous with domicile, whichimports not only intention to reside in a fixed place, but alsopersonal presence in that place, coupled with conduct in-dicative of such intention. * * *There had been a debatewhether or not sports TV pro-grams should air the final runof Georgian luger NodarKumaritashvili who died priorto the opening of the 2010 Win-ter Olympics.

For me its just simple: If thevideo is too gruesome for sportsfans to see then its no longernecessary to show them in de-tail.

    Showing Kumaritashvili in

the gate 48 seconds before hisdeath was actually eerie, andthe photo of him getting at-

tended to by first responderswas the definition of macabre,as I have seen it onyoutube.com. The video was

immediately got deleted. For crying out loud, theluger was already dead. Whatis the news value in showinghim futilely receiving CPR?

During the actual luge com-petition, everyone made itdown safely, and thank God.

For luge, that meantprogress, healing and going back to normalcy.

This hyper-speedy sportresumed a day after tragedyrocked the sliding community

and threatened to spoil thespirit of the Vancouver Gamesbefore they opened.

    NO POWER CRISIS,SAYS ENERGY CHIEF

ENERGY Secretary Angelo T. Reyes has assured the pub-lic that there will be no rotating brownouts for Luzon.

In an interview, Reyes saidseveral offline plants will be op-erational by then to supply thepower needs of Luzon, Visayasand Mindanao .

Reyes met with independentpower producers over the week-end to avert a looming power crisis.

In a related development,Reyes has the l owest performancerating among the Cabinet mem-bers of President Arroyo, accord-

ing to a recent 2010 SWS SurveyReview.Speaking in the sidelines of the

2010 SWS Survey Review at theAsian Institute of Managementlast January 14, Mahar Mangahas, president of Social Weather Sta-tions (SWS), ranked the ArroyoCabinet members according to theirperformance rating, where Reyesposted a poor or -15 percent inthe Performance Ratings of Se-lected Cabinet Officials conductedfrom February to September 2009.

Former Health Secretary Fran-cisco Duque topped the perfor-

mance evaluation survey, whileReyes was at the bottom of thesurvey, along with the late PressSecretary Cerge Remonde.

Mangahas said Reyes plum-meting ratings may be due to hisfailure to resolve the liquefiedpetroleum gas (LPG) crisis last year.President Arroyo had chided Reyesin public for failing to resolveimmediately the LPG problem.

As Energy chief, Reyes is again

facing the issue of power crisisas massive brownouts loom.

Last year, various sectors in-cluding senators and Catholicbishops slammed him for creat-ing a scary scenario leading upto the 2010 elections.

Sen. Chiz Escudero even askedReyes to resign for his failure toresolve the looming power crisis.

This is a clear case of crimi-nal shortsightedness on the partof Secretary Reyes given that thesupposed power crisis will play

a critical role in next year's po-litical exercise," Escudero had said.

Scorsese to make new film with De NiroBERLIN MartinScorsese is keen to

revive a cinematicpartnership withRobert De Niro thatgoes back to "MeanStreets" nearly 40years ago and saysthe project will berelated to themobster world.

The 67-year-oldmovie maker was atthe Berlin film

festival for thepremiere Saturdayof his latest pictureShutter Island, hisfourth collaborationwith LeonardoDiCaprio.

Bob De Niro (andI) are talking aboutsomething that hasto do with thatworld, Scorsesetold reporters after apress screening of

    Shutter Island,where the audiencereaction was

decidedly muted."There's no doubtabout that. We'reworking on some-thing like that, butit's from the vantagepoint of older menlooking back, noneof this runningaround stuff."

Rumors thatScorsese may bereviving one of film'smost successful

collaborations havebeen rife for years,as fans look backwith nostalgia toclassics such asRaging Bull, TaxiDriver and CapeFear.

The Hollywoodheavyweights lastworked together onCasino in 1995.

    Fear and paranoia

For now, attentionis focused onShutter Island,

starring 35-year-oldDiCaprio as U.S.Marshall TeddyDaniels in a psycho-logical thriller set ona wind-swept,rugged island that ishome to a highsecurity psychiatrichospital.

In the story basedon a Dennis Lehanenovel, he and hispartner Chuck are

brought in to huntdown a killer whohas mysteriouslyescaped from hercell leaving no trace.

Daniels, trauma-tized by memoriesof the Nazi concen-tration camps heliberated as a U.S.soldier, becomesincreasinglysuspicious of awider conspiracy

    and the boundariesbetween conflictingrealities gradually

    blur.Asked why the

movie was not inthe main competi-tion line up in Berlin,Scorsese jokinglyreplied: What if itdidn't win?

In Shutter Island, which hits U.S.theatres later thismonth, the director

aims to recreate whathe calls an atmo-sphere of paranoia

and fear prevalent in1950s America whenhe was growing upduring the Cold War.

I experienced the50s first hand inNew York City, thecold war, the para-noia, the secrecy,he said. In cinemaitself, the movies Iwould go and see

    reflected this.For DiCaprio,Shutter Island was

possibly the hardestpart he has had toplay for Scorsese, along with "TheAviator" in which heportrays the wealthybut increasinglyderanged aviatorand film makerHoward Hughes.

Asked why hekept coming back toScorsese, he said:Youd be a fool not

to jump at theopportunity to workwith somebody whoI consider, andmany consider to bethe definitivedirector or our time. You'd be an idiot.

THE Philippine Embassy in Polandreiterated its warning to job applicants

for deployment to Poland not to pro-ceed, specifically those recruited as"mushroom pickers".

"There are approximately 86 Fili-pino women deployed or working asmushroom pickers currently in Po-land. Majority of these workers arenot happy with their jobs due to verylow wages, unfavorable working con-ditions and/or substandard accom-modations," Philippine Ambassadorto Poland Alejandro D. del Rosariosaid.

    Representations are being made

with the Philippine Overseas Employ-ment Agency (POEA) not to issue clear-ances for the deployment of Filipinosin Poland to work as mushroom pick-ers.

The Ambassador pointed out thatthe Filipina mushroom pickers areemployed under disadvantageous cir-cumstances.

Ambassador del Rpsario expalinedthat these OFWS are not directly em-ployed by the mushroom companies but through a Polish recruitmentagency who subcontract their services.

"As the mushroom company is notdirectly responsible to the workers, itis not concernred with their welfare.

Second, workers are paid on a per kilobasis, which is dependent on the avail-

able mushrooms for picking and theorders received from customers. Ratesper kilo depend on whether the mush-room is of first, second or third classquality. In effect, there is no fixedwages for a mushroom picker. Work-ers' monthly earning vary fromUS$150 to US$500," Ambassador delRosario said.

Ambassador Del Rosario addedthat workers are given the task ofcleaning the production sites and itspremises, and they are not paid do-ing this job.

The workers are also living in sub-standard accommodations. Morethan 30 individuals share one dilapi-dated bathroom with limited supplyof hot water, the Filipina workers wakeup as early as 3:00AM to queue andbathe.

"With a placement fee of aboutUS$4000, the bulk of which is nor-mally financed by 'lending companies'charging exorbitant interest rates, thedeployed mushroom picker is deepin debt even before he or she startswork," the Ambassador said.

On January 29, the Embassy alsoissued a warning to Filipinos on ac-cepting jobs in Poland in light of 35

workers languishing in a small hos-tel for a month in Warsaw. The 35

arrived during the last week of De-cember 2009 and it was only on Janu-ary 26 that 16 of them found employ-ment as promised by Euroconnect, aPolish recruiting agency.

The agency works with JavierManning, who is based in Malate,Manila. These two agencies wereresponsible for the earlier plight of19 mushroom pckers who walked outfrom their company because of un-fair labor practices.

Last December 8, 2009, the Em- bassy repatriated 10 of the 19 mush-

room pickers. The repatriation was made pos-sible after the Embassy and the DFA,in cooperation with the POEA andthe Oveseas Workers Welfare admin-istration, persuaded the Polish re-cruiter to provide them airplane tick-ets.

Several of these OFWs complainedthat they did not receive theUS$600.00 salary per month indi-cated in the manpower request formfrom the Polish recruitment agency. They also claimed that they only re-

ceived a net pay of US$180.00 amonth, based on a certain produc-tion quota.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadWhen a publishing company asked me to write an

endorsement for a new book, I said Id be glad to. It

appeared to be a helpful effort directed to young people, challenging them to live for God in a changing world. But as I read the book, something troubled me. Al-though it had lots of Scripture and great spiritual

advice, it didnt explain that the starting point forany relationship with God is salvation through JesusChrist.

The writer seemed to imply that the essence of living spiritually in modern society is based totally onactiongood deedsand not on saving faith in Christ.

I didnt write the endorsement. The culture of the church is changing rapidly. Often

left behind in the rush to find exciting new ideas is theessential nature of the gospel. The apostle Paul wasastonished that people so readily embraced a different

gospel (Gal. 1:6). What he preached was not fromman, but a direct revelation from Jesus Himself (vv.11-

12).We must never let go of that true gospel: Christ

died for our sins, was buried, and rose again for ourjustification, declaring us righteous before God (Rom.

4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3-4). This alone offers the power ofGod to salvation for everyone who believes (Rom.1:16). If we want to live for God, this is the onlyplace to start. Dave Branon
