SPOT LIGHT On What Not To Buy On Valentines

To Advertise Call: 01709 814549 Or Email: [email protected]

What NOT to buy HER for Valentine’s DayIn the lm What Women Want, Mel Gibson plays a man with the incredible ability to read women’s minds and is able to say, do and give them exactly what they want. If only it were that simple...

On Valentine’s Day, a woman does NOT want to be treated like your mother, brother, cook or cleaner. So coming home with a pair of bed socks because she complained once of cold feet, is not night wear she’ll warm to.

Presenting her with tickets for the match will not score you points (unless she’s a die-hard footie fan, in which case do your worst), nor will the latest gadget to speed up house work. No woman wants new baking tins for Valentine’s Day either. Diamond ring – Yes! Flan ring – No!

Free slimming club membership might seem like a good idea, especially if she moans constantly about her weight, but anything that hints she is looking fat or old will go down like a lead balloon.

You might be safe with owers, chocolates or perfume, but NOT if they are cheap! She can tell the dierence between a £3.99 bunch of chrysanthemums and a £30 bouquet of roses even if you can’t. And a ring from Claire’s Accessories that turns green by Easter is denitely a no go area!

Good luck as you aim for the impossible – to discover what women really want!

What NOT to buy HIM for Valentine’s DayWhether it’s for Christmas, his birthday, your anniversary or Valentine’s Day, the problem remains the same. What do you get the man in your life? So why not simplify things by considering what NOT to buy!

You might be tempted to shower him with the latest power tools, but unless he is a skilled DIY fan this could spell disaster. Let him loose with anything that drills, screws, saws or hammers

and the result could be gaping holes to

rival the Grand Canyon, and curtain poles that look like ski runs.

His six-pack might have reduced to a half pack, but is free gym membership really the answer? Once a man gets home, the only exercise he is interested in takes place within six feet of the television and involves just one part of the body – the index nger.

A book might seem like a good idea, but what man is actually interested in reading? You could get him one with lots of pictures, but the type he’d like might not be suitable with kids around.

Good luck - and happy shopping!

SPOT LIGHT On The Food of Love & New Year, New Job?

The Food of LoveAt this time of year the sales of chocolate and oysters go way up. But do aphrodisiacs really work? Is the way to a man's heart really through his stomach? Many old wives tales abound about food and love, and some of those tales actually have a grain of truth!

Oysters have long had a romantic reputation. It turns out they are a good source of zinc, which is vital for the production of those hormones responsible for our libido! If you don't like oysters, try cheese, pumpkin seeds, peanuts or lamb, which all have high zinc levels.

Chocolate, especially dark, is also high in zinc. But in addition, it increases the amount of serotonin in the brain, inducing relaxation, as well as other hormones that increase pleasure

impulses and receptiveness. No wonder we feel good after eating some!

Other foods that have been found to contain or release those all important feel good chemicals are sushi, pomegranate juice, red wine, caviar, soy (tofu) and honey.

So it looks like the ideal meal for wooing your favourite person would be oysters, lamb, sushi or tofu, with pumpkin pie for dessert! Not forgetting the chocolate and cheese for nibbles, and a nice red wine or pomegranate juice to wash it all down!

Of course you can't make someone fall in love with you just by feeding them the

right foods, but you may enhance already good feelings, and who knows what might happen from there?

New Year, New Job?Despite the current economic climate, there are still jobs out there, and if you are really determined to nd work, you will.

Firstly, put yourself on a good job website like www.direct.gov.uk. Register with employment agencies or simply send your CV out on spec.

Far more jobs are picked up through personal recommendations than through job ads. Tell people you are looking for work and let them act as your eyes and ears, plus with online networking sites there has never been an easier way of getting your name out there.

Make yourself more saleable by increasing your skill set. There are plenty of free courses around and why not consider doing voluntary work? As well as learning new skills, you will show a potential employer that you are proactive, hardworking and self motivated.

Make sure that your CV is up to date and tailor it to suit the skills needed for the job you are applying for. If you need help producing a CV, check out the BBC or the Jobcentre Plus websites for starters.

The most important thing is to regard your search for a job as a full time exercise: the job of getting a job if you like. If you put in the necessary time and eort, you will eventually be successful!

SPOT LIGHT On The Three Best Resolutions

Don’t Forget To Mention SPOT LIGHT When You Call

The three best resolutions you can makeBy Rita Williams Hall

At the end of the year, most of us tend to take stock and decide to make some changes: lose weight, spend less, stop smoking. The thing is, we are creatures of habit, and it’s dicult to change things, especially when we see them as a sacrice. So instead of a long list of things that we may never get round to, here are my top 3 resolutions that you should denitely make.

Smile more! It’s amazing how much brighter the world looks when you smile. The more you smile, the more people will smile back at you. Spread a little happiness to be happier,

and it’s free!

Change one thing. Just one thing might be all you need to make a dierence. Drink an extra glass of water daily. Buy blue eye shadow instead of brown. What one thing can you think of that will shake things up?

And nally, the most important of all:-

Don’t make any resolutions! Save yourself untold stress and just forget about it. When you are ready to make a

change, you will do it, no matter what time of year it is. So, keep in mind your general goals, to be healthier, wealthier and wiser, but do it when you’re ready, not when the calendar tells you to.

SPOT LIGHT On Garden View & Are You Sweet Enough?Garden ViewSexy Rexy or Buxom Beauty? The snowdrops maybe in full bloom right now, but as February marks the month of love, there is another ower which cannot go unmentioned. This is of course the Rose. Roses have been the symbol of love for hundreds of years, and where would our orists be without them? Come to think of it, where would men be without them? We'd have to make a decision as to which single ower to purchase, to show our aection to our intended.

Roses had a great 'boom' period in the 60's where homeowners and councils alike, removed geometric shapes from their lawns, creating island beds lled with roses. Equally spaced and pruned accurately, these hardy, woody shrubs lived on for years and examples of these schemes can still be witnessed. Associated with bare soil, manure, at caps and the dreaded 'P' word (pruning), these woody and often stumpy plants, with their short lived blooms in vile colours, would eventually be seen o with a white talcum powder like coating of powdery mildew by late summer... I really don’t understand why they ever went out of fashion!!!

Well thankfully those days are gone, and I reckon it's about time our roses made a 21st century comeback. Just as Dahlias did a few years ago, I think roses deserve a second chance. Some of the modern roses with great pest and disease resistance and an instinct for repeat owering, have been bred with the old fashioned

sweet smelling types to make wonderful garden plants. In addition, there are roses for every situation, from pergolas and pots, to hedges and even partially shaded walls. They look great planted in a mixed border, especially when under-planted with a free-owering hardy Geranium.

It's not too late to buy your bare root roses, but act quickly, as ideally they need to be in the ground before the end of the month. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for around 30 minutes, while you dig a very generous hole about 40cm deep and 30cm wide. Incorporate well rotted manure or compost into the planting hole and plant slightly deeper than you would normally, so the graft (knuckle) is under the ground. Back ll with soil and rm well. Don't prune until next month.

Other jobs to do this month include:• Pruning deciduous shrubs such as Berberis • Prune Clematis (type 3 / late flowering types only) • Prune Wisteria (search spearjac on youtube.com for

my video ‘how to’ guide) • Order seed potatoes and onion setts

Lee’s favourite Rose of the moment, 'Gertrude Jekyll'.

Until next time, happy Valentine’s Day!

Are You Sweet Enough? It’s a new year, and many of us are feeling more than a little guilty about all the over-indulgence. We’re making resolutions to cut-down and shape-up. This article is not exactly good news for cake, biscuits, and chocolate-lovers, but the latest statistics for the growing crisis of type 2 diabetes, makes far worse reading! Baroness Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, is determined to spread the word as some 2.8 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with it, and an estimated 850,000 more probably have it, but don’t yet know it. All carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the body and our cells use this as their primary source of fuel. Glucose enters our cells using insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or when the body is unable to eectively use the insulin that is being produced, resulting in high glucose levels in the blood. The biggest risk factors are: having a family member with the problem, being overweight, especially around the waist, and being over 40 years of age. People of South Asian or African descent are at higher risk at a younger age. These ethnic groups are generally less able to digest lactose (milk sugar). Research is also beginning into the

growing evidence of a link between diabetes and milk intolerance.Excess calories are stored as fat, and an accumulation of excess fat around the liver and the pancreas is thought to be a key cause of type 2 diabetes. Check your own risk score on Diabetes UK’s own website, www.diabetes.org.uk. You should consult your GP if you’re already experiencing increased thirst, blurred vision, tiredness and urinating more than usual.Fortunately, eating less sugar, salt and fat and exercising more regularly will help to reduce the risk. You may need to consider diluting fruit juices and limiting dried fruits, such as gs and raisins, and sweeter fruits like ripe bananas and grapes which although packed with nutrients, do contain high sugar levels. White bread, pastry and white rice also create a sugar rush compared to the wholegrain version. The New Year is a good time to start making changes. A chromium supplement may help if sugar cravings become a problem. Small regular meals, containing protein with vegetables, and healthy snacks, such as nuts and berries in between meals, will help to stabilise blood glucose levels and stop between-meal hunger pangs. These days it is easier to cut down on fats rather than sugars. When oered sweet treats just decline politely, explaining that you’re sweet enough!

Snoring - causes and curesBy Rita Williams-Hall

Getting a good nights sleep can be dicult at the best of times, especially when you're juggling running a house with work, hobbies and other commitments. If you live with a snorer, it can be even worse. Spouses of snorers can be a very sleep-deprived bunch!

But snoring is not just annoying; it can also be an indicator of underlying health problems. Here we take a look at the most common causes and cures for snoring, and hopefully lead you toward a more peaceful sleep.

One of the most common reasons for snoring is over-eating and/or lack of exercise. Just a few extra kilograms can lead to a build up of fatty tissue around the throat, narrowing the airways and making it more dicult to breathe well while you are sleeping. This tends to aect men more than women, but if you carry a little excess weight, lose it and you’ll probably cure the snoring, as well as improving your general health.

Indulging in a glass or two of a favourite tipple is the way many of us choose to unwind after a busy day. However the relaxing eect we seek can also be the cause of snoring, because alcohol relaxes the muscles in your airways, causing them to go oppy. Sleeping tablets or other sedative medicine can have the

same eect. If you nd you snore after drinking, try not to drink just before bed time. Leave four hours or so to allow your body to absorb and process the alcohol. If it’s medication which is the problem, ask your GP if there is a non-sedative version available.

Smoking, allergies, stuness and mouth breathing are all common causes of snoring. Smoke from cigarettes irritates the lining of the nasal passages and throat, causing swelling and catarrh. This reduces the airow. Simple allergies to dust mites or feather pillows can have the same aect. When you have a cold, your nose may be blocked, which leads to mouth breathing. Mouth breathing means the air that would normally pass gently over your soft palate hits the back of your throat directly, causing vibrations and snoring. Try steam inhalation, or nasal strips to clear and widen your nasal passages. If you smoke, giving up or even just cutting down will have a multitude of benets, not just on the snoring!

Finally, snoring may be caused by a medical condition called sleep apnoea.

This is a condition where you momentarily stop breathing during your sleep, before waking with a loud snort or snore. You may suer without knowing. If you nd yourself unusually tired, irritable, and suering from morning headaches, or if your partner notices you are snoring heavily punctuated by gaps of silence, consult your GP for a check up.

SPOT LIGHT On Choose A Plumber & Plumbing Mishaps...

To Advertise Call: 01709 814549 Or Email: [email protected]

Choose a PlumberWhen something goes wrong with your plumbing, the stress can often be made worse by not knowing what to do or who to contact to get it xed. What if you get a cowboy? We’ve all seen the TV programmes with their tales of time wasting, overcharging and replacing parts needlessly. How can you ensure that you choose a reputable engineer? Here is some advice to help if the worst happens.

Check with your insurance company whether you are covered, and whether they can be billed direct, or if you need to pay rst and claim the costs back. Also check the excess on your policy; it might be more cost eective to pay for the work yourself, especially if it will aect your no claims bonus.

It may be worth joining a plumbing insurance scheme, such as those oered by British Gas or The AA, where you pay monthly and know that if

something goes wrong, qualied engineers will come out to your home to x it, usually at a xed price or for no extra charge.

If you have to nd a plumber yourself, ask your family and friends to see if they’ve had good service from an engineer or company. These personal

recommendations are often the best way to make sure your plumbing is xed well.

When contacting a plumber, especially if you’ve found their name in the phone book or on the internet, ask if they are members of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE). Members must hold recognised qualications and/or have extensive experience. In addition, CIPHE has a complaints procedure should things go wrong.

Make sure you get at least 3 quotes for the work you need doing, and check the following areas are covered: whether there is a call out fee; how many people will be doing the job and whether the fee is a at rate per hour or per person, and whether parts are billed for separately.

Get your nal quote in writing, on headed paper. The nal cost of the job shouldn’t be too dierent to what is written, unless there are unforeseen circumstances and everything is agreed with you in advance.

Find out in advance how long the job will take. This will also help you estimate the nal cost of the job.

When the job is nished, ask for a complete breakdown of what’s been done, so you know exactly where your money has been spent.

If your plumber has done a good job, don’t hesitate to let others know!

By Rita Williams Hall

Plumbing Mishaps...Would you know what to do?

Frozen Pipes:Turn o the mains water supply. If the frozen pipe has a split, empty the cold water cistern by opening all the cold taps. If the pipe hasn’t split, thaw it out slowly by applying hot water bottles. If any part of the hot water system is frozen or there is a split, turn the central heating o and call a professional.

Burst pipe:Turn o the mains water. Open all the cold taps so the pipes and storage system drain quickly, but do not turn on the hot taps. Turn o the central heating, any electric immersion heaters and call a professional.

Blocked sink or toilet:If the sink is blocked, unscrew the trap - the u-shaped pipe under the sink (don’t forget to put a bowl underneath to catch any water!) - and check. If the blockage isn’t there, or your toilet is blocked, use a plunger that completely covers the outlet. It creates a vacuum to suck and push the blockage away. A chemical dissolver breaks down organic material, clearing the blockage away with little or no mess. Call a professional if the blockage remains.

The best way to prevent plumbing emergencies is to make sure your storage system and exposed pipes are well insulated and have your central heating system serviced annually.

Heart Melts - Why not whip up a batch for Valentine’s Day?

IngredientsFor the cookies:• 225g/8oz butter (slightly

softened)• 140g/5oz caster sugar• 1 egg yolk (lightly beaten)• 2 tsp orange extract• 280g/10oz plain flour• 75g/3oz plain chocolate chips or

chunks• 75g/3oz raisins• Pinch of salt

For the coating:• 1½ tbsp caster sugar• 1½ tbsp cinnamon

Makes 24-30, depending on the size of the cookie.Preheat the oven to190C / Gas Mark 5

MethodCream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and uy.Beat in the egg yolk and orange extract.Sift the our and salt into the mixture, then add the chocolate chips and raisins and mix until they are thoroughly combined. The mixture should be quite rm.

For the cinnamon coating, mix together the caster sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Scoop out walnut-sized pieces of the cookie dough, roll them into balls, and then roll them into the cinnamon mixture to cover.

Place the cookies on a greased baking sheet, spaced well apart. You might need two baking sheets if you make the full amount.

Bake for 12-15 minutes. Leave to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, and then use a palette knife to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Pop the cooled cookies into a gift bag or decorative jar and your Valentine gift is all wrapped up. Enjoy.

SPOT LIGHT On Sugar Solutions

To Advertise Call: 01709 814549 Or Email: [email protected]

Sugar SolutionsWhat to use instead of the white stuMost of us are well aware of the need to limit the amount of sugar we consume, but a little sweetness is occasionally required! Best then to use more natural, nutrient-rich products than rened white sugar, such as chopped banana, pear or berries or a spoon of honey (local or Manuka) or maple syrup on cereals. Similar could be added when cooking tart fruit or you may wish to try Xylitol, an increasingly popular natural sweetener that can also be used in baking and jam making.

Xylitol, recommended by Diabetes UK, has been extracted from the bark of birch trees since the 1940s, when sugar was in short supply. Found naturally in many fruits, it looks and tastes as sweet as sugar but has 40% fewer calories and, with a low glycaemic index (GI), has far less impact on blood glucose levels than sugar, and even honey and maple syrup. It inhibits yeast so cannot be used in bread making and will not promote Candida overgrowth (the organism responsible for thrush). There is evidence that bacteria do not feed on it so it won’t cause tooth decay. Large quantities may have a laxative eect on some so introduce it gradually. It is toxic

to dogs so m u s t never be fed to them. It is avai lable in some

supermarkets and on line.

High Fructose Corn Syrup, HFCS, is increasingly being added to drinks and processed foods, instead of sugar. Fructose is the main sugar in fruit but there is some concern that when it is rened or ‘isolated’ it is not so good for us. It is metabolized by the liver and converted into fat more easily than any other form of sugar. Similarly, Agave Syrup, made from a Mexican cactus, may not be as good for us as rst thought, but it does have a low GI.

The safety of articial sweeteners is still controversial but hopefully more research will be forthcoming. Websites such as medicinenet.com are useful references.

Stevia, a plant long used as a sweetener in South America and Japan, in their cola drinks, and recommended by the American Diabetic Association, is not approved for sale in EU countries!

It is clear that deciding on sugar substitutes is not easy. It will be a personal choice based on taste, state of health and the latest reliable research. My advice is to check they are as natural and unrened as possible. Try to use a variety, in moderation. Cutting down is always the best option as it reduces cravings, retrains your palate and improves your health! Picture a food pyramid, representing a balanced diet, with the healthy whole grains and vegetables at the base, supporting the other food groups and sweet treats, the tiny pinnacle at the top!

SPOT LIGHT On Get Plastered...

To Advertise Call: 01709 814549 Or Email: [email protected]

Get Plastered......and avoid those morning-after regrets!

Today I’m going to tell you the secret of obtaining a good result when plastering. Are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I’ll begin. The all-important secret of plastering success is...to use a professional.

I’m not kidding either. Believe me, plastering is not a job for the uninitiated. Most professional plasterers have trained for years to become masters of their craft . Plastering is part art, requiring tremendous eye-hand co-ordination, and part chemistry. Add water to dry plaster mix and you begin an irreversible chemical and crystallization process. The water and air content of the mix is critical, and timing is everything, as the plaster has to be ‘nished’ at just the right time. My poor husband learned the hard way that if it all goes wrong - and if you’ve never done it before, it will go wrong - no amount of paint or wallpaper will make that surface look good.

So what does a plasterer do?Plasterers work internally and externally. They mix and apply nishes to external walls using sand and cement, pebble-dash and stone-eect materials. Internally they mix and apply various types of plaster to walls, oors and ceilings. As we discovered, they are also pretty adept at xing DIY ascos.

Solid plastering is the application of a wet nish to an internal surface or a protective covering such as pebble-dash on to an external surface. The plasterer will use a range of hand tools and sometimes spraying equipment in the case of pebble-dash.

Fibrous plastering involves making ornamental plasterwork such as ceiling roses, cornices, ornamental columns and architraves using moulds, and a plaster and short bre mix.

Dry lining is the construction of internal partitions using plasterboard or wallboards xed to a timber or metal frame. It really is best to use someone who has been recommended to you and whose work you’ve actually seen. Failing that, contact one of the trade associations below. They will be able to put you in touch with someone local. All the organisations promote best practice and all will mediate in the event that you are dissatised with the services of any of their members. To ensure that when you get plastered, you don’t end up with a dreadful headache the morning after—use a professional. You know it makes sense.

Knowledge of Angels – Jill Paton WalshJill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought provoking novels for adults,

and ‘Knowledge of Angels’ is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the fteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of ction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by local shermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress. At the heart of the book lie a number of questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Both of their stories are also about love, and self-knowledge, and what is and is not possible.Yet the book is written in such a way, that these weighty questions are explored at the same time as creating a page-turning thoroughly engrossing story, in which the reader is drawn in turn into the lives of Amara and Palinor.

Disturbing, sensitive and deeply aecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time.

Stormbreaker – Anthony HorowitzThe rst novel in Horowitz’s phenomenally successful Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, adventure and James Bond style one liners.Alex Rider is a seemingly ordinary 14 year old boy. However, when his uncle is killed in a car accident, his world begins to unravel. An orphan, Alex nds that without the protection of his guardian he is in the hands of his uncle’s employers – and they are not a bank, but MI6!Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action sequence to action sequence, with a liberal amount of humour and contemporary references along the way. The structure is familiar to Bond fans, and once you have suspended your disbelief at the idea of a teenage spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. In particular, the gadgets Alex uses and the villainous Herod Sayle will appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly sinister character of Yassen Gregorovitch is introduced here, ready to be developed further through the rest of the series.Ideal for fans of ripping yarns and reluctant readers alike, you will nd that one chapter is never enough, as Horowitz is the master of the cli-hanger ending. A 12 year old of my acquaintance told me recently that this book is ‘even better than the lm’ – if you know any 12 year olds, then you will know that I need not say any more than that!
