American Legion Boys State, foundedin 1935, is among the most respectedand selective educational programs ofgovernment instruction for U.S. high-school students.
Georgia Boys State is a comprehen-sive one-week course in state and localgovernment. It is a “leadership actionprogram” where delegates take part in apractical government course.
It is designed to develop a working
knowledge of the structure of govern-ment and to impress upon the citizenthe fact that our government is just whatwe make it.
Along the way delegates have theopportunity to learn the politicalprocess by organizing a mythical 51ststate.
Each level of government is run bythose delegates who are elected toserve. Instruction is presented on thelaw and court system, parliamentaryprocedure and Georgia political history. The program is conducted on the cam-pus of Georgia Southern University inJune.

JMA fifth-graders walk away with the gold
As a culminating activity for Mrs. Carla Bentley's American Historyclasses, the students participated in a Quiz Bowl the last five days ofschool. Each homeroom was randomly divided into teams two weeksbefore the games were set to begin and given American History ques-tions filled with information taught in the class throughout the year. The children were allowed study time at school, but were alsoencouraged to study at home if they were going for the gold.Sometimes the competition was tight with scores only one point apartor even tie breakers being necessary. Overall, the Quiz Bowl builtexcitement about history, especially as the championship got closer, and most importantly the students found out that they really doremember what they learn at school.
Congrats to the winners, Mrs. Anne Herko's homeroom: AshleyBrady, Gracie Mitcham and Logan Freeman. Mrs. Bentley's home-room: Dane Pinney, Nathan Tyson, Tyler Gray and Caleb Fields.
