The Community Programme provides an opportunity for all residents of Hanoi to become a part of the UNIS Hanoi community through a variety of classes, workshops and sport activities offered for adults and children. The Community Programme should should strive to meet the continuing education needs of both expatriate and Vietnamese residents. While it is important for the Community Programme to be financially self-sustaining, these classes, workshops and activities are not necessarily a source of revenue for UNIS. Rather, they are a vital component of the school’s public relations efforts.

Registration and Payment• All registration is done online via UNIS website. Instruction

can be found at www.unishanoi.org/CommProg. Community Programme is unable to accept registration via email or phone.

• We do not accept partial bookings for classes.

• Once you enroll in a course, your attendance and payment are expected.

• Participants are required to pay the full fee in case they miss the first lesson and be deducted 10% if they miss the first two lessons.

• All participants will receive an email invoice indicating what is owed for each course. Please pay at the UNIS Business Office (Admin Building) in cash, deposit VND cash at the ANZ Bank (show invoice), or make a bank transfer in VND. The UNIS Business Office is open from 8:00 to 17:00 Monday - Friday. If payment has not been received by the date indicated on the invoice, we reserve the right to give the place to those on the waitlist.

• No lessons are scheduled during UNIS events, breaks and national holidays.

• Please sign your waiver of liability form and submit it to Co-Curricular Activities Office if this is your first time participating in the Community Programme.

Refund Policy• Refunds are not guaranteed and may be given on a case

by case basis. Submitting an early cancellation may increase the chances of getting a refund.

• Refunds will only be issued if the class/ workshop/ activity has yet to start.

• Refunds will be made when courses are canceled by the Community Programme.

• If a class is postponed, every attempt will be made to re-schedule. When a class cannot be rescheduled, a refund for the postponed classes will be issued.

• For sport activities, no refund will be given for cancelation due to weather.

• Those with outstanding Community Programme invoices will not be able to sign up for a new class until all invoices are settled.

Join the gastronimical journey of mystical spices and savour the taste and delights of Amazing Indian Cooking right in your home!!! Join the UNIS Community with Ms Bushra who will lead you through the journey over 5 classes and introduce you to the basics of Home Cooked Indian Cuisine. In the class you will be able to learn dishes such as Chicken Biryani, Chicken Handi and Vegetable Cutlets, Chicken Tikka and Daal Tadka, Chicken Karadhi and naan, Butter Paneer and Roti. Once you learn the simple technique, you can be creative and make your own dishes with variations. Ms. Bushra will share the preparation technique with you. The language of instruction is English.

This cooking class will teach you to bake delicious bakings. Using the ingredients of flour, cream, butter, sugar, oil, chocolate, egg, gelatine, mascarpone cheese and fruit to bake: cake and add decorations on the cake with cream, chocolate mousse, yogurt mousse, tiramisu, marble cheese cake, black forest cake. Weicheng Liu is a very passionate cake baker whose professional training includes 3 cooking certificates. Weicheng used to workin 5-star hotels in Beijing. Weiching will offer step-by-step instructions and essential techniques of baking. After each session, you can take home a portion of your baking. The language of instruction is English.

This cooking class will introduce you to the basics of famous Chinese cooking including dim sum, dumpling, sweet and sour pork, gongbao chicken, mapo Toufu, fried shrimps with cashew nuts and. It will also welcome ideas from students, to ensure that the lessons will offer something for every interest and taste. At the end of the class, you will be able to prepare a Chinese culinary feast for your family and friends with the most popular and traditional dishes and will also have the knowledge of Chinese culture in terms of food.

Weicheng Liu is a very passionate Chinese chef whose professional training includes 3 cooking certificates. Before coming to Hanoi, he worked for 5-star hotels in Beijing such as Crowne Plaza and Waldorf Astoria.

Weiching will offer step-by-step instructions and essential techniques of traditional Chinese cuisine. He will offer expert advice on food preparation that promote good health and well-being. All ingredients to be used in class are readily available in Hanoi. After each session, you can take home your cooked dishes to share with everyone. The language of instruction is English.

Once the home to kings, the Citadel area has recently been vacated by the Military and is now open to the public. Wander through the historic grounds where first the French and then the Vietnamese generals laid their military plans. Start at the South or Central Gate to view the first archeological dig which verified the age of the entrance. This tour is conducted by our popular tour guide, Linda Mazur. C3 Transitional Architecture in the Thien Quang Lake Area WeekeNd x 1

This unique tour created by Linda Mazur will take you on an adventure around Thien Quang Lake. This area may look quite serene but its history is full of interesting untold stories. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Thien Quang Lake area became the home for the rich, powerful and famous. In the 1930s, new zoning laws compelled the owners to build villas and refrain from opening businesses. Newly graduated architects from the beaux arts college began experimenting with modern designs and materials. These architectural wonders are rarely on the regular tours but deserve a place in Hanoi’s history. Not recommended for infants or children aged 8 and younger. Please wear comfortable shoes.

C4 Tour to Kim Lan Pottery village WeekeNd x 1

This tour of Kim Lan pottery village is a relaxing getaway to the countryside 20 kilometers south east of Hanoi. Kim Lan pottery village remains untouched by the rampant commercialism of many historic sites. Archeological evidence proves the development of Kim Lan as a centre for trade in pottery and ceramics long before its more famous neighbour, Bat Trang. Earthenware bricks from the 9th century have been excavated.

Under the rule of the Chinese general Cao Bien from 865 the village prospered. Countless scholars passed on their knowledge to their students. Kings and courtiers searched for wives and concubines in Kim Lan as their beauty was legendary.

The development of Thang Long (Hanoi) in 1010 needed building materials, tiles and bricks, and later fine pottery. The village of Kim Lan supplied them all to the citadel and later the residents.

The visit includes a leisurely bus ride of 40 minutes on the other side of the Red River, a walk through village lanes, a bicycle ride through rice fields, a visit to a pottery making family and then a tour of the Catholic church, Buddhist temple, village dinh (communal house) and to the first community museum in Vietnam, with archeological artifacts that attest to the villagers claim that they were the first to produce and trade in tiles and ceramics.

The first French Concession area (1874) was built in the swampland between the Red River and Hoan Kiem Lake but in 1887 they controlled the city and proceeded to build roads and palaces and cathedrals. We start in front of the Ly Thai To statue next to the post office and stroll along Paul Bert Street – previously home to the imported French perfume shops, the most elegant dressmakers and chocolate patisseries. We pass the opera house, the first University Indochine and the Pasteur Institute and end at one of the army bunkers which protected the city fromattack. Part of the tour will be by cyclo.
