● Rockingham County’s 15th elementary school● Opened in August, 2009● Principal: Sharon Martz● Mascot: Cardinal● About 390 students

○ 56-68 students per grade○ 159 qualify for free and reduced lunch○ 92% white, 5% black, 1% hispanic

● About 70 teachers and staff

● Built in 1840● After the Battles of Cross Keys (June 8th and 9th, 1862) Jennings and his

wife Barbara treated wounded soldiers in their house● Severely wounded soldiers treated under a burr oak tree before being

transferred to a hospital● October 1864: The Union’s General Philip H. Sheridan’s burning of the

Shenandoah Valley destroyed Jennings’ flour mill● Field trip: Great place to visit while learning about the Civil War

● Stone wall built in 1935 by Works Project Administration (WPA)○ WPA was most famous act out of all of Roosevelt’s New Deal Programs○ Employed millions of unemployed people (although more than 5 million

remained unemployed)● Provided economic stability for many in the community while also

conserving natural areas● Skyline Drive is 105.5 miles long● Complaints while being built: cannot see the view (needs to have an

open-type guard); may block snow removal

• Field Trip: While learning about economics and the Great Depression, a field trip can be taken while learning about the different acts put in place by President Roosevelt.• Can integrate science and social studies lessons while

outside. • Science: National Park (What trees are there? What

animals inhabit it’s environment?)• Social Studies: Economics behind it; Great Depression for

history

● Resources:○ Most of land is open and mostly farmland

■ Corn fields and cows● Buildings vary from old and rustic to new and more modern

○ Downtown buildings (older, some with fading writing)○ More modern buildings further into town (stores, fast food)○ Car repair shops and used car dealerships are everywhere
