Gorge Waterway Cleanup 2018 As if in a grand gesture of gratitude, the sky cleared and the sun shone on the 155 volunteers that came

out to support the 2018 Gorge Waterway Clean up on Saturday September 22, coordinated by the Burnside Gorge Community Association.

Volunteers waded through knee high mud and pushed their way through thick bushes to collect more than 950 pounds of garbage along the Gorge waterway shoreline and surrounding trails.

An enormous THANK-YOU to all that came out to support the event. The ecological health and con-tinued preservation of our Gorge Waterway continues to thrive as a result of your selfl ess efforts!

Thank-you to our generous sponsors and supporters: Ellice Recycle, Victoria Harbour Ferry, Soupa Cafe, Irene’s Bakery, Island Tents and Events, Alley Kat Signs 98.5 The Ocean and KISS 103.1, CRD and United Rentals Victoria.

Special thanks to Adam Sheffi eld and the City of Victoria’s Bylaw division, students from St. Michael’s University School Rowing Team, The Junior Forest Wardens, Al-Nashir Charania and the Ismaili com-munity group.

7Burnside Gorge Community News: October 2018

Who’s Who in the 2018 Victoria Election! On October 20th we hope that everyone will come out and vote in the 2018 municpal election. If you haven't had a chance to read up on the candidates yet

we hope this will help!

MAYORAL CANDIDATESSaul Andersen

I've realized that we don't need the mayor to know how to run the city - we have a very profi cient, well-paid staff doing that! What I offer instead is a VISION for Victo-ria - a GREATER Victoria! Amalgamation? Worth talking about? How about boulevard/schoolyard farming? Rain-

water collection? Harm reduction? SENSIBLE cycling infrastructure? Most importantly, housing/zoning reform to help facilitate AFFORDABLE living spaces! Plus, I'll FIX TRAFFIC! After 20 years of cab-driving, enough peo-ple said, "Hell yeah! We'd vote for you...you just made all the lights!" So I ran for MP in 2006 - fun! - and kept it up: federally, provincially, municipally. In terms of the popular vote, I'll get my 1 percent; at heart, I'm a Buddhist an-archo-syndicalist: unmotivated by money, celebrity, or power (after minor-ing in Political Economics @SFU). Campaigning manifests my concerns for social justice and belief in karma. Thanks for your time and consideration!

Rob DuncanRob Duncan is a former academic social scientist

and a social and environmental activist, currently work-ing in low-barrier supported housing. Rob was born and brought up on traditional Coast Salish territory in Victoria, and rents a small apartment in Fernwood. Rob is running primarily on a housing platform of policies sand initiatives

addressing Victoria’s housing crisis. Victoria has a homelessness and non-market social housing crisis, a rental market crisis, and a real estate crisis. The starting point of Rob’s platform is that housing is a human right, and homelessness is both a policy choice and a human rights violation. At the same time, 70 % of Victoria residents are renters, making the rental market crisis the one that affects the largest number. Other parts of the platform in-clude citizens’ assemblies, a municipal childcare program, a municipal living wage policy, encouragement of worker-owned co-operative businesses, and several proposals regarding transportation.https://duncan4mayor.ca/

Michael GeogheganMichael Geoghegan has lived and or worked his entire

adult life in Victoria. He moved here in 1985 to attend the Uni-versity of Victoria. After graduating with a B.A. in economics he worked for 7 years at the BC Legislature, including 4.5 years as the Ministerial Assistant to Bill Barlee. He is married and has an adult son and two teenage daughters.

As a government relations consultant Mike successfully lobbied to get Seaspan the federal contract to build Coastguard ships and he played a key role in settling a specifi c land claim for the Okanagan Indian Band. He also lobbied for the creation of the First Nations Finance Authority which is based on the BC Municipal Finance Authority.

He served for six years on Langford’s planning and zoning committee. He has been endorsed by Mayor Stew Young as well as Chief Russ Chipps of the Beecher Bay First Nation, John Dann the sculptor of the Sir John A MacDon-ald statue and the Vancouver Island Building Trades.

Stephen Hammond - New CouncilLawyer. Business owner. Community leader.

Stephen Hammond’s understanding of the law, a bot-tom line, and his natural community leadership have given him the grassroots support to become the next mayor of Victoria.

Stephen stood up for his community when it was in cri-sis, and as mayor, he will stand up for you.

Lisa HelpsLisa has worked hard over the past four years to

deliver on her 2014 campaign platform. Four years later, revitalization, renewal and acts of reconciliation are tak-ing place across Victoria. It’s an interesting and exciting time.

With a transparent, no-nonsense approach to decision-making and a deeply collaborative nature, Lisa has brought unprecedented economic vi-tality to Victoria. She’s also worked to ensure that everyone benefi ts from Victoria’s success and to preserve the feeling of connection and belonging in our neighbourhoods.

An internationally recognized speaker on local approaches to climate change and community economic development, she’s built strong relation-ships with Victoria’s business community and with the provincial and fed-eral governments. She’s made City Hall more accessible by fostering an in-novative and responsive culture.

Most importantly, Lisa has a vision of compassion, understanding, cour-age, and hope for the future. And she’s got a plan to tackle the City’s most pressing issues.

David Arthur Johnston47 years old. Had a rare epiphany years ago that

lead to a 'vow of poverty' which, in turn, resulted in tents becoming legal on municipally-owned public access prop-erty... at night. Being responsible for such a dramatic affect I have inadvertently become married to this town, seeing

the dark corners that as of yet have been considered normal. It is virally psychotic to act as if we are rich when we carry a 100,000,000+

dollar debt and the only correction, mechanically, is via the worship of aus-terity. I am radical realist and this town is caught in a nightmare. Plus I know the mind-boggling importance of tent-cities so the crystal meth/heroin/crack market needs to be crushed, as it is a weapon of defamation by association.

Bruce McGuiganBruce McGuigan lives in Fernwood. He moved to

Victoria in 1994 to teach at UVic before working as senior advisor for the provincial government. A tenured Profes-sor of Sociology at Vancouver Island University, he recently completed 5 years as the Executive Director of Family Ser-vices of Greater Victoria, and is the co-founder of the Victo-ria Social Innovation Center. He is the proud father of three

graduates of Vic High.Regarding qualifi cations, Bruce says,“ I am solution driven and known for

resolving issues and completing stalled projects within shorter time frames than expected. My experience with contentious matters and diverse stake-holders in BC spans the Forest Service, ICBC, the Public Service Agency, and the Ministries of Public Safety, Transportation and Labour. I’ve been a consultant to other provinces and the federal government. The desire to fi x things also led to my community work with Family Services and Victoria Social innovation Centre.”

Campaign RyMoCampaign RyMo acknowledges that we practice our

conversations, art, and design on the traditional and un-ceded territories, of the Lkwungen and WSÁNEĆ peoples. Campaign RyMo is a legacy project - aimed at reimagining the spaces in which we are engaged as a whole city. Cam-paign RyMo is focused on the health of our city, through process-development and engagement. We have reached

out to the arts community to provide imagery and language that provokes curiosity and conversation. This is a campaign where discourse and collabo-ration respectfully coexist. This is the beginning of a future with more direct democracy. A victory for Campaign RyMo comes in the shared progressive change of the city, practiced in everyday cultural expressions. RyMo as May-or on October 20, is a direction for the campaign, the product of what that looks like lies in collective voice of the city. Please feel welcome to explore further at www.HeyRyMo.com.

Alexander SchmidI was born and raised in Victoria, the city I love. I

have a Physics degree and I am a Physics lab instructor at the University of Victoria. I am a problem solver by edu-cation and temperament, as well as a hard worker. I like to be helpful. I know that life is not easy for many in our community, and I am running for Mayor in order to make a difference in their lives as well as those of others who are more fortunate. I see many problems in our city and I want

to solve them. I am used to challenges. People who know me, such as my stu-dents, colleagues and members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada to which I belong, know that they can rely on me. I hope that you, too, will put your trust in me.

Chris ZmudaI am running for Mayor because I want to lead

Victoria onto a new path of Common Sense Actions.First fi x old problems: Use a referendum of resi-

dents to choose whether to scrap the illegal pot shops, and decide whether to keep the bike lanes; fi x home-lessness in the city by engaging federal and provin-

cial funding for homeless shelters; challenge the cost of the Johnson Street bridge project.

Secondly, attack new problems: solve congestion in the city with more parking space, and the traffi c snarl into the city with an express commuter bus system; just renovate Crystal Pool.

Third, fi x City Hall: Freeze those big salaries and change the CRD di-rectors; improve tenant rights by challenging landlords with a Bylaw; make Victoria safe again with police presence on the streets; really promote Cen-tennial Square as an attractive center for diverse culture in our City.
