COMMUNITY UPDATE

ECHUCA-MOAMA BRIDGE PROJECT

MARCH 2019

Welcome to the first edition of our new quarterly newsletter

Work on the new roundabout at Campaspe Esplanade has started, using approximately 35,000 cubic metres of earth, and the new service road on the northern side of Warren Street is also underway.

Over the last few months a lot has been happening on the largest infrastructure project in northern Victoria.

In this first edition of our quarterly Community Update you’ll read about how works are progressing on Warren Street, how local school students are gaining an insight into the project as part of their curriculum, and of course the latest news on your new river crossing.

Warren Street starts to take shapeWorks on Stage 2 of the Echuca-Moama Bridge Project are progressing well. This $26 million upgrade of Warren Street will provide you with a safe and reliable main link to the new bridges across the Campaspe and Murray Rivers.

We’ve begun levelling out the road and laying the foundation for the new road surface. The old flood relief bridges have been demolished, and we’ve begun building the new higher capacity bridges.

Another step closer to a brand new Murray River crossingThree contractors have been invited to submit tenders to build Stage 3 of the Echuca-Moama Bridge Project, which will include construction of the new bridges across the Campaspe and Murray rivers. All three contractors were shortlisted for their experience and have a proven track record (nationally and internationally) for delivering exciting and significant infrastructure projects.

The tender process is expected to conclude in mid-late 2019, with major construction slated to begin in 2020.

Once built, the new river crossing will provide a safer and more efficient journey for drivers in Echuca and Moama while better linking the economies of Victoria and NSW.

The $280 million Echuca-Moama Bridge Project is jointly funded by the Australian, Victorian and New South Wales Governments.

Changing the way you move around the areaTo carry out these important upgrade works safely and as quickly as possible, we’ve introduced changes to the way you move in and out of the area.

To help make this transition as smooth as possible, we’ve been keeping the community regularly updated about traffic changes.

From now until late 2019 people visiting residents, businesses and the Echuca Cemetery on or near Warren Street can use Homan Street (via Ogilvie Avenue and Campaspe Esplanade) to access the area.

The upgrade to Warren Street is expected to be complete by the end of 2019, when it will be re-opened to traffic.

Flood relief bridges are taking shapeDuring February and March we achieved more significant milestones on the Echuca-Moama Bridge Project.

Our construction crews installed 70 concrete bridge beams on the two flood relief bridges at the western end of Warren Street, while another 74 beams will be craned into place for the two flood relief bridges located at the eastern end of Warren Street during April.

In March, we completed all piling activities, with a total of 276 concrete piles installed as support for all four of the flood relief bridges.

We would like to thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we undertook these vital works.

The new flood relief bridges will be able to better handle heavy vehicles and will replace the existing, narrow crossings along Warren Street, which are nearly 80 years old.

The flood relief bridges are expected to be completed by mid-2019.

Did you know? Stage 2 of the project involves:

• four new flood relief bridges to better handle heavy vehicles and replace the existing, narrow crossings along Warren Street, which are nearly 80 years old

• a new roundabout connecting Warren Street to the future Murray River crossing, which will be built in Stage 3 of the project

• an extended right-hand turning lane into Homan Street for residents, local businesses and the Echuca Cemetery

• a new dedicated service road for residents, which will improve safety and make your journey easier

• a new shared user path to make walking and cycling safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Helping students achieve their personal bestOver the past 12 months we’re proud to have been involved with local schools to help bring parts of their student curriculum to life.

The St Joseph’s College Year 9 Personal Best Program and their Year 12 Geography Curriculum, together with Echuca College’s Geography in Humanities for Year 7, have been designed to encourage their students to learn and grow and fulfil their individual gifts and talents.

Throughout 2019, students from Echuca College and St Joseph’s College will be involved in projects that encourage them to explore the connections between their environment and the community.

The Echuca-Moama Bridge Project team is partnering with the schools and the students to help them understand how the new river crossing is being built to consider these aspects, and how impacts are being managed.

The project and the schools share a common aim. As future bridge users and possibly even civil engineers, it’s important that students learn about its history, how it came to be where it is, why it’s important for the community and what’s involved in building the largest infrastructure project in northern Victoria.

We are looking forward to continuing our partnerships, but also building new ones with other schools in Echuca and Moama.

Out and about in the communityThe largest infrastructure project in northern Victoria joined in the fun of the biggest water ski race on the planet.

Volunteers from the project were on site at this year’s Southern 80 weekend. Not only was it great to be a part of one of Echuca’s biggest events, it was also great to have lots of locals and visitors pop into our marquee to chat about the project and take away some information.

We’re looking forward to coming back again next year with even more exciting news about the new bridge!

Acknowledging those that came before usRecently, representatives of the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Winslow Constructors and Major Road Projects Victoria held a ceremony to celebrate our valuable partnership.

This special artwork has been produced for our construction site fencing in recognition of the Yorta Yorta people, who are the traditional owners of the land we are re-shaping.

Loud and proudHave you been down to the Murray River lately? If so you may have noticed our new banner on the northern bank.

The banner not only shows that we’re getting on with the job, it also gives you a pretty good idea of where the new river crossing will be located.

Did you know? The location of the new bridge will also be the finish line for the Southern 80.
