“Ending tHE yEar witH a Bang”

I know, I know. This is only November. It’s not the end of the year yet. But it is the end of the year we worship by--our church calendar year. In December, Advent begins and we begin a new church year in our worship. So, now in November, we are coming to the end of the year. November begins with All Saints Day when we celebrate the assurance of Christ’s salvation from the powers of sin and death; our loved ones who have died in faith are certainly alive with God in Christ’s resurrection. Then on our nation’s Veterans Day, we honor all who have served our country bravely, preserving our freedoms and protecting us from hostile powers. November ends with Thanksgiving Day when people of all faiths give thanks for the gifts that we have asas individuals…and as a nation. On the last weekend in November, Community Lutheran Church and Hope United Methodist Church will be hosting together a children’s choir from Kenya called Hakuna Matata. They will be staying with host families for most of the previous week before. On the evening of Saturday, Nov. 23, they will be performing at Hope United Methodist Church with a spaghetti dinner following. On Sunday, Nov. 24, they will be delivering our Sunday message through their performances at both the 9 AM and 11 AM worship services at Community Lutheran.

So as we anticipate the coming of Christ in the Advent season, we show loving reverence for our neighbors by praying and remembering those who have gone before us, showing hospitality to strangers, honoring our veterans, and giving thanks to God for all of our material blessings here, in our nation and in our world. In Christ’s loving peace, Pastor Tim

C.S.C. HELP AND HOMELESS SHELTER

If you’ve driven on North Oatman Road lately, you’ve noticed the progress that has been made on the construction of the new homeless shelter. This facility is slated to open in early 2020. You may also have seen information about the facility in recent Mohave Valley Daily News articles. Catholic Charities, BHHS Legacy and the Stamper family have donated $2.8 million, but another $430,000 is needed to complete the project. If this is something you might be interested in supporting, Arizona has made it efficient to make donations with tax credits up to $1000 per couple and $500 per individual. Contact Catherine Peterson, Catholic Charities, (928) 830-4646, or [email protected], for further information. CLC also has individuals participating with leaders of this project and members of the broader community to gain information and determine how we can best support the shelter’s efforts.

May the Lord Bless This Endeavor!

CHOIR NOTES FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR…

In a few short weeks, Advent will begin. And, that means it’s time for our annual Advent Cantata. We know you’re going to love this year’s performance of “Christmas Presence…A Gathering of Hope, Peace and Love,” by Pepper Choplin. This cantata is truly a festival of Christmas Joy! Mark your calendars now for either or both performances, Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 PM and/or Sunday, Dec. 22 at 3 PM. Bring your families, neighbors and friends. In addition to the cantata itself, you will hear an array of musical pieces, solos and special musical performances, culminated by Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia.” You won’t want to miss this…

See Pastor Blezard’s thoughts on thankfulness

and gratitude in this month’s Stewardship

article. He has some good ideas for “A month

of Thanksgiving,” practicing thankfulness and

expressing gratitude all month long.

always witH a gratEful HEart… It seems that about this time of year…as we approach the holidays…people begin to think about all the blessings they’ve received and all that they are grateful for. And they truly do give thanks with a grateful heart. Hmmmmm…what about the rest of the year?

I read something recently…I think it may have been from Joel Osteen. It came to mind today as I thought about giving thanks with a grateful heart.

Wouldn't it be great to have Thanksgiving 365 days a year? We can…remember Thanksgiving isn’t just a day…it is an attitude. I think it’s that “Attitude of Gratitude” we’ve talked about. We need to celebrate every day because no matter what is going on in our lives, we can find reasons to thank God. Each day that we are given is a blessing and filled with things to be thankful for. Having an attitude of gratitude or thanksgiving is a choice we all make each day. It depends on what we choose to focus on. We can either focus on our problems, or we can focus on our blessings. Ask yourself: What do you want…more problems, or more blessings? Keep in mind: Living with an attitude of gratitude means that we don't just thank God for what He did in the past, but we also thank Him for what He will do in the future. We thank Him for opening new doors. We thank Him for bringing the right people into our lives. And for the plan He has for each of us. When we thank God in advance, that's really a declaration of faith. Our thanks says, "God, I'm so sure of Your goodness, I'm so sure that You're working in my life, that I'm going to thank You right now for what You are going to do tomorrow…or next week…or next year!" That’s what faith is all about. Faith is what opens the door for His promises to enter our lives. Today and every day, let’s work on having an attitude of gratitude and letting our faith say thank you with a grateful heart.

Prayer: “For each new morning with its light; for rest and shelter every night; for health and food; for love and friends; for everything Your goodness sends. For food in a world where too many walk in hunger; for faith in a world where too many walk in fear; for friends in world where many walk alone. We give you thanks, O Lord. Amen I wish you and your families a most blessed and Happy Thanksgiving—on Thanksgiving Day and every day of the year.

God’s Blessings, Linda Miller

stEwardsHiP mEssagE a montH of tHanksgiving…

I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. – John 10:10b

Thankful people are happy people. It’s not just a feel-good slogan on a refrigerator magnet or bumper sticker; it’s proven science. “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships,” reports Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat. That sounds like the abundant life Jesus describes in the gospels, doesn’t it? So why aren’t Christians more thankful and happy? While we all sometimes face hardships that can avert our thankfulness, many of us simply take our blessings for granted. Perhaps we have succumbed to the lie we hear from 24/7 advertising – that we never have enough and never are enough. Hopeful news from researchers is that thankfulness can be cultivated. Those who consistently practice thankfulness develop gratitude and happiness. This November, the month of Thanksgiving, make thankfulness a daily spiritual practice. Here are some ideas for “A month of Thanksgiving”: • Pray thanksgiving. In your morning and evening prayers, thank God for your life and whatever

specific blessings come to mind. • Keep a thanks diary. Every day write down what you are thankful for and why. Challenge

yourself to find and pray about 10 things daily. • Express thank you. Go out of your way to express thanks to the people you encounter every

day with a kind word or a note. • Create a thankfulness calendar. Every morning write something on your calendar for which

you are grateful to God, and think, pray and meditate on it until bedtime. Practice thankfulness consistently and you might be surprised to find yourself enjoying the abundant life Jesus promises us.
