EDUCATION

Yes, we connect talented, experienced people with nonprofits. And yes, our ‘skilled talent’ often takes that nonprofit to its next level.

Yet, behind that forward-facing work is a quiet and much larger initiative that’s harder to put into words. It’s about new thinking, infinite possibilities and meaning. It’s about living with purpose at every life stage and surprising ourselves by solving problems even we weren’t sure could be solved.

The theme of this, our very first Annual Report, is a transit map. As you peruse these pages, you will see evidence of how – in our short seven years of existence – we’ve mapped new connections between people and nonprofits; between nonprofits, businesses and governments; and between experience and innovation.

We don’t need to overcomplicate matters, or hang back hoping that the right pieces fall into place. At Experience Matters, we’ve shown that change can run on parallel tracks: you can enlighten and empower the individual and create positive community change.

We have the resources in our community to solve the BIG issues right now. We believe that by optimally leveraging these resources and connections, we have the capacity to make positive innovation and lasting change happen now and to make it happen fast.

So, as you read this, here’s what we’re hoping will become clear: the quiet, big idea behind Experience Matters is that we are building a vital network of people and organizations that connects and energizes our entire community.

Thank you for being a source of that community connection and energy.

Sincerely,

Nora Hannah Experience Matters Chief Executive Officer

Todd HornbackDMB AssociatesExperience Matters Board Chair

Experience Matters is more than you think.

Actions start as ideas. LITTLE ONES,

then big.“I could make a difference.”

Our big idea? We believe we can change outcomes for Maricopa County by leveraging

the talents of experienced adults.

Our why?We believe we

can change lives, transform

communities and create a better future.

I am going to CHANGE the WORLD!

We’re on a fast track to the future and it’s where you’ll want to be…

I want to do something DIFFERENT!

NOW WE’RE GOING BIG.

By every measure, Mission of Mercy (MOM) was doing just fine. Since it began in Arizona in 1997, MOM had established six mobile healthcare clinics

consistently delivering free, high-quality medical care and prescription services to people who had no way to pay for it (uninsured, underinsured, working poor

or homeless). On top of that, MOM had created a powerful, volunteer-driven business model that was working.

They really had only one big challenge: they wanted to do more. Without the budget for additional staff, they needed high-level, non-medical volunteers who could implement the kinds of programs, processes and technology that

could take MOM to the next level.

That’s why the first-ever Experience Matters Learning Lab was a game-changer for MOM. They gained insight into how to engage volunteers at just about any stage of life; the collaboration also paid off with a clear strategy for using skilled talent to expand MOM’s reach.

Within a year, their first Encore Fellow—Dianne Aguilar—developed an innovative outreach program called Community Connections. This new framework empowered MOM to expand its network into neighborhoods it had never reached before.

Realizing the exceptional capacity of encore talent, MOM returned to Experience Matters in 2015 to take on a second Fellow, Scott Bartelt, who developed and implemented a volunteer management database that is now being launched nationally across all Mission of Mercy sites.

MOM of Arizona’s Executive Director, Catherine Amiot, said, “The value-add from our Encore Fellows has been huge, but the impact on the community is even larger. Add to that the life-changing opportunities that were created for both of our Fellows, and the total value is enormous. We feel very blessed to be part of a community that has Experience Matters in it.”

Learning Lab is a hands-on training based on the latest

research and proven best practices to help nonprofits

change the way they think about volunteer engagement.

Encore Fellows are highly-skilled, experienced adults who are recruited, coached and placed in yearlong strategic assignments with organizations where their contributions make an impact.

ACTIVE 8 pairs nonprofits with a dedicated coach to help customize volunteer engagement models to meet their specific needs.

“It was a life saver.” That is exactly how Mary Beth Maassen describes her Encore experience.

She oversees the City of Phoenix’s volunteer initiatives in local schools, with an emphasis on literacy tutoring programs. That’s the end of the story. What we love most is how it begins.

Mary Beth was an educator and school administrator for 31 years. She felt keenly that it was time to move on, but like so many, had no idea what that looked like.

So when Mary Beth discovered the Encore movement, it was like a light bulb turned on. Through Encore.org, she found Experience Matters and eagerly

signed up to learn more at a Coffee Talk. At that very first meeting she was blown away; suddenly her age and experience were an asset rather than a burden.

Inspired to move forward, she attended Encore Discovery workshops and felt her whole world shift as new possibilities opened to her. When she applied to the talent pool and was matched to the City of Phoenix, it was a dream beginning to turn real.

In her work with the City of Phoenix, Mary Beth has been able to apply decades of valuable skills and insights to the field of education; even more than that, she rediscovered her confidence. What does she find most rewarding? “Just being in a place where I’m valued, having a renewed sense of purpose, and knowing I am making a positive impact not just on each school we serve, but on the whole city.”

To invoke an old proverb: Mary Beth jumped first. Then she grew wings.

Mary Beth’s story is one of many, and it underscores one of our core beliefs: you can do good and do well. Not only are Encore Fellows and other Experience Matters talent doing good in the community; because of transformational experiences like Mary Beth’s, they are also doing well.

The Service Profile is a confidential tool to help

individuals increase their success and satisfaction in community

service by considering and defining the types of service

work that best suit them.

Coffee Talks are boutique meetings over coffee

and refreshments where interested individuals can learn more about

Experience Matters and our service opportunities.

Encore Discovery is a series of four interactive and thought-provoking workshop sessions to give individuals in transition the opportunity to explore their journey and plan for a second act.

Vision:Experienced

people building a stronger community

With 1 million baby boomers in Maricopa County, if only 1% engaged, it would generate a $486.75 million impact. Roughly the same as:

• 5% of the budget for the entire state of Arizona

Between 2010 and 2014, the only two counties to add more than 100,000 people 65 and older to their total populations were Los Angeles, CA (167,000) and Maricopa, AZ (103,000).

Corporate FundersOur corporate funders understand that investing in a healthy community is good for business. Experience Matters is grateful for their visionary investment in Arizona’s future.
