This yeaq four awardswere presented to outstmd-ing entrepreneus, volun-teers and community or-ganizations.
Ken and Dan Hamp-shire, owners and operatorsof Waterside Wireless inthe RM of Lac du Bonnet,received the business ofthe year award from Lacdu Bonnet MLA WayneEwasko.
Waterside Wireless wasestablished in 2006 to previde wireless high-speedlntemet to people within thelocal axea. With assistancefrom Community FuturesWinnipeg Riveq WatersideWirelss was able to accessfunding in order to estab-lish their business vmture.Starting witt just one towerin Lac du Bonnet tfiat trms-mitted to a tower at Sun-set Bay on the Lee fuver,the company has grcwn to16 towers sewing a muchlarger geographic area.
The Hampshires believethat giving back to theircommunity is important.
They regularly contributeand donate to worthwhilecomunity causes such asthe Food Bank, the Christ-mas Hamper progrm, theannual ice fishing derbymd others.
Winning the Self Em-ployment Awild ws PeterKanellis, creator of LawnSharks, a lawn and yardcare business operatingin the RM of Springfield.Kanell is is a resident ofDugald and operates thebusiness with his wife Kitty.
Lam Sharks has en-joyed great success duringtheir first year ofopemtionand is expanding slowly tonew areas of Wimipeg.
The Self EmploymentAward recognizes entrepre-nem who have participatedin the Self EmploymentProgram and who havedemonstrated above av-erage effort and successduring their year on the pro-gram. RM of BrokurheadReeve Glen Dudeck wason hmd to roke the awildpresentation.

mm Region, Taylor was therecipient ofthis year's Vol-unteer of the Yem award,presented by La VerendryeMLA Dennis Smook.
Tbe Volunteer of theYear award is presentedammlly to recognize andcelebrate the outstandingcontribution made by a lo-cal resident to the economicdevelopment efforts of theircommity or the region.
Taylor *roed m chair-person of the very suc-cessful Polar Bear Dareevent that wffi held in Lacdu Bonnet this past Febru-ary. In June 2011, she ap-proached the Eastman Kid-Sport Prcgrm md ageedto chair the event. Taylorinsisted that it be held inLac duBonnetto help bringtourism and exposure to thecommunity.
She volunteered hertime and worked tirelesslyfor the next seven montlsto ensure th€ success oftheevent by securing sponsor-ship, assisting with theevent logo design, attmct-ing media exposure andsetting up the jmp site.
The Polar Bear Dareevent encouraged peopleto raise funds by collectingpledges. A total of50jump-ers signed up and alongwith spomonhips obtainedby Taylor, the event raisedover $18,000 for EastrnanKidsport md attract€d over
300 people to the com-munity.
This yem's recipient ofthe Commuity lnitiativeAward was the Lrc du Bon-net and District CharitableFoundation.
The Foundat ion is acomrnmity of donon work-ing to enhance the qualityof life in Lac du Bonnetand smounding area. TheFoundation works to raise
funds through charitabledonations and fundraisingefforts.
These firnds are pooledand a board of directorsovenees the resulting in-vestment portfolio. Theendowed funds from theportfolio are then madeavailable through a localgmnting process that sup-ports chritable activitiesin the area.
The Lac du Bomet mdDistrict Chritable Founda-tion resulted from the visionof a number ofcommunityminded people, includingDr. Bob Rutherford. his sonMauri, Cliff Zarecki andGus Wruck who recognizedlie value a local fomdationcould bring to the area.
The foundation cunent-ly has endowment fundsamounting to just over$200,000.
"Community FuturesWinnipeg River is dedi-cated to community eco-nomic development andour activiiies help to buildcapacity at the local andregional levels strengthen-ing the comunitic we livein," explained chairpersonRoland Dandmeau.
According to Dandene-au, dwing 201I nerly 800business seruices wae pro-videdto 183 clients; CFWRbusiness senices helpedleverage $1.4 mill ion forthet cfients; 25 businessesmd 73 jobs were created asa result of CFWR busin€sssenices md lending activi-ties; and work progressedon 4l new and ongoingcommunity economic de-v€lopment prcjects.
