We are blessed to live in a country such as Canada. The freedoms and riches we enjoy

today were not without cost. It is my hope these will never be taken for granted. They

are the products of the sacrifices and struggles of those who gave of themselves to

benefit future generations.

I believe that obligation remains unchanged. We have a responsibility to our

beneficiaries as they will benefit from our time, talents and treasures. What will our

legacy be? Have we made a positive impact on others, our community, and our country

or beyond? Whether as individuals, a group, or a community, never doubt in your

ability to make a difference. It is simply a matter of choice as everyone has something to

offer.

Have you noticed the Community Foundation monument at the museum grounds?

While Heritage Club may not be the most accurate descriptor the purpose is twofold. One is to increase the endowed funds for your Foundation and the other is to recognize

individuals and businesses, past or present, who have made a positive contribution or impact on our lives or our communities.

Whether it is a parent, relative, friend, pastor, teacher, coach, the list is endless someone has made a difference in your life. Would it not be nice to recognize them as well as their

efforts? You can chose to do this as individuals or as group with a onetime donation or a pledge over time. Once contributions on their behalf meet the $1000.00 dollar threshold,

their name will be placed on the monument. We do not want it to end with a name on a monument as time has a way of fading memories. Who they were, when and where they

lived, what they did and why their name is there, can be forgotten. We prefer that not happen. We would like a small biography submitted, preferably with a photo. These will be

placed in a binder at the museum, part of our history and their heritage.

The donors: The Filuk family. The gift: $115,000 and climbing. The cause: Swan Valley Regional Secondary School The reason: To fund scholarships

When Lazar and Jean Filuk arrived in Canada from Ukraine in 1928, they settled near Swan River, Man., and took up farming. The couple had 15 children and made sure they all got an education, even

during the height of the Great Depression. Many years later, the Filuk kids decided to set up a scholarship in honour of their parents at their old school, now called the Swan Valley Regional Secondary

School. They donated $2,400 in 1985 and added to it over the years. Today the scholarship fund, which is managed by the Community Foundation of Swan River, has grown to $115,000 and a new

generation of Filuks, roughly 200 of them, has taken charge. They hope to nearly double the size of the fund within 10 years and boost the amount given to students. Currently it pays for two annual

scholarships, each worth $1,000.

“A lot of us who administer it now have gone through university, so we know that $1,000 is great but we’d like to see the award up around $5,000 each,” said Justin Filuk, who lives in Vancouver and is

leading the charge to expand the fund along with several other younger family members.

His father, Jack, passed away earlier this year and the estate plans a donation to the fund. Other aunts and uncles have also contributed through their estates. “It has become something that we are all very

proud of.”

Thanks to a grant from The Community Foundation, the Mafeking Volunteer Fire Department has high visibility signage to help make motorists aware of emergency incidents on the highways, ensuring the safety of fire fighters in attendance at an accident. In addition to a highly visible sign and stand with “Emergency Scene Ahead” written on it, the signage also includes eight electronic, very bright beacons which are on the running board of the rescue vehicle. The Community Foundation is pleased to have been able to help make this safety measure available to Mafeking and R.M. of Mountain.

The recent cold weather has not deterred the enthusiasm of the Grades One to Eight students at the Community Bible Fellowship Christian School as they experience the joys of snowshoeing: a program which has recently been incorporated into their physical education program. With financial support from the Community Foundation of Swan Valley, the staff was able to purchase seventeen pairs of snowshoes in December and the youngsters have been

happily tramping around the schoolyard and beyond since then. The Community Foundation is pleased to have been a part of providing this addition to the school's physical education program.

Members of the Special Olympic Clubs in the Swan River and Russell areas enjoy a very active participation in a variety of sports and their executives continue to work hard to offer more competitive athletic experiences in the year ahead. At this point in time, there are several clubs: Cobras Bowling (adults); Tigers Bowling (Special Olympics in the school program); Tiger Fire Floor Hockey; Fundamentals (ages 7-12) and Russell (5-pin bowling). The Community Foundation of Swan Valley is pleased to have been able to help pay for practice jerseys and equipment to provide a safe environment for the Special Olympic athletes.

Since the days of Florence Johnston, the first librarian who worked so hard to bring the wonderful world of books to the people of the area, to the splendid facility we have today, The North-West Regional Library has provided an environment where residents can peruse hundreds of books and access other amenities, all the while enjoying a serene atmosphere, perhaps from one of the comfortable corners that have been artfully designed to encourage a reader “to stay a while”. New programs are continually being incorporated to meet technical, educational,

informational, cultural and recreational needs. Children's programs have always been a priority, and now, with financial support from the Community Foundation of Swan Valley, a new computer workstation will be purchased benefiting the youngsters, parents and caregivers. The Foundation is pleased to have had a role in making the Children's Technology Area a reality.

Susan Everton of Safety Services Manitoba is pictured here as she presents the fourth Mature Driving Workshop sponsored by Service to Seniors in Swan River. This is just one of the many programs and workshops Service to Seniors has brought to the area, covering things like estate planning, safety aids, and being aware of frauds and schemes. Beginning in 1987 and incorporated in 1994 under the auspices of the Swan River & District Community Resource Council, the Service to Seniors program started with congregate meal programs at Rainbow

Lodge and Fairhaven. Since then they have expanded their work to help provide rides to medical and other appointments in and out of town. And their Life Line Program now has well over 100 members, helping seniors to stay and feel safe in their own homes. The Community Foundation of Swan Valley is pleased to have helped purchase a multi-media projector to be used for future workshops.

When the Swan Valley Animal Protection League moved on to the property where their dog facility is located, they very much needed a place to warm up during the winter months. With financial help from the James and Marie Hogg Designated Fund and a grant from the Community Foundation of Swan Valley, these dedicated and caring volunteers, who daily are faced with chores to look after rescued animals, now have a place with a wood-burning stove where they can warm up with a cup of coffee during the winter months and to get out of the heat of the day while having their lunch during the summer. Although small in numbers and ALWAYS in need of more volunteers

and helpers to walk and care for the animals, this group continues to provide a much-needed service in the valley area. The Community Foundation is pleased to have been able to support their efforts to save and care for abused and rescued animals.

And they need to be cared for and nurtured and offered a healthful approach to life. When the volunteer parent group of the Minitonas Middle Years School approached the Community Foundation of Swan Valley for support in buying playground equipment and a seating area with picnic tables and benches, the Granting

Committee was happy to help purchase some of this equipment. At a time when concerns are being raised that children are not getting the exercise they need to grow and develop, the Foundation is pleased to assist in giving the children of the Minitonas area a place to exercise and have fun.

And they need a place to meet and interact with one another. The Northern Neighbours Seniors’ Centre plays an integral role in the community of Birch River, where friends meet the first Sunday of each month for a pot luck supper and a good old visit. The building is also used for health clinics, funeral receptions, family gatherings, and more. It houses a games room with pool tables and shuffleboard, an exercise room sponsored by the C.D.P.I. and the Remembering the Years Museum and Display, which has attracted a host of visitors, some of whom would have attended classes in the 50s and 60s. It’s vital to residents that the centre remains open but it

badly needs a new roof. The Community Foundation of Swan Valley is pleased to have provided a grant to go toward this major repair.

Leaders of Air Cadet Squadron 519 have trained hundreds of young men and women for over sixty years, preparing them to go out into the world as mature adults ready to make their own way. The summer is now over but the cadets have enjoyed a varied and interesting number of programs which will stand them in good stead as they move along in their lives. One

of the most important, and certainly the most popular, pieces of equipment that the cadets have recently acquired is the Dreamflyer Virtual-Reality Flight Motion Simulator designed to enhance the flight simulation experience. The pilot-lead and pilot-induced roll and pitch oscillation is interpreted by the brain to perceive the feeling of flight. Using their existing flight simulation software, flight enthusiasts can enhance their simulation experience for any purpose, whether it’s virtual competitions, instrumentation practice, or solo flight. The cadets now have three computer screens set up to watch their progress. The Community Foundation of Swan Valley is pleased to have helped make this equipment available to the local Air Cadets bringing them up to speed to compete in this technology-driven world.

The director and workers of the new Heyes School Daycare Centre are very grateful to the Community Foundation of Swan Valley for their support in helping them purchase quality equipment that will last for years to come. The children will derive many happy hours of enjoyment from things like the listening and carpentry centres, the puppet theatre and the painting easel, all of which are designed to enhance their learning processes and satisfy their natural curiosity.
