Crane Communities

It is my pleasure to introduce the first Community Crane report. In June of

2014, I took Command of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane and it has

been my pleasure to be able to tell our story to numerous guests and high

ranking dignitaries over the past nine months. Our technical prowess and

national leadership are gaining notoriety across the Department of Defense,

due to dedicated men and women who work to ensure Warfighters always

have the decisive advantage over our adversaries. It is one of my guiding

principles to be sure that our employees are also contributing members of

the communities in which they live. Hopefully, this document portrays that

to be true.

Please know that as we strive to build and support the nation’s Navy in

defense of the homeland, we also want to be partnering with those

communities around us to increase our quality of life each and every day.

Thank you for being our partner as we work, serve and raise our families

together.

CAPT Jeffrey T. Elder

New STEM Program Teaches Skills to Support Next Generation of Warfighter

NSWC Crane’s new after-school program allows students to develop hands-on technical skills in areas such as computer programming, 3D printing, electronics and much more. The program, CraneTech, is modeled after MakerSpaces where people from all walks of life go to learn new skills and socialize, and is open to students once they reach 7th grade. CraneTech is currently available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in a dedicated room at WestGate Academy.

STEM Programs

Did you Know?

NSWC Crane has just under 3,000 employees, and 67% of them are scientists, engineers and technicians.

Did you Know?

NSWC Crane and University of Southern Indiana have teamed together to bring a science equipment lending library to our region. The lending library is much like a traditional book library, but we offer a wide variety of science equipment. The equipment is available to local schools and to employees.

NSWC Crane Partnering in Strategic Vision for Southwest Central Indiana to Strengthen Region

The Strategic Vision for Economic and Community Prosperity plan, released in November 2014, calls out Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane (NSWC Crane) as a major catalyst for continued economic growth in the area. As the sole federal laboratory within the region, NSWC Crane both contributes to and benefits from key entrepreneurial efforts, technology partnerships, and workforce development components of the regional plan.

“There are some very important efforts and goals identified in this plan that we are excited about for the future of Crane,” stated Brian Blackwell, NSWC Crane’s Director of Engagement.

The plan calls out the need to build upon NSWC Crane’s relationships with Indiana’s academic institutions, including Indiana University, with a focus on collaborative applied research while leveraging all assets to ensure global relevancy and economic growth.

Joint Land Use Study Underway

The goal of a JLUS is to reduce potential conflicts between military installations and surrounding areas while accommodating new growth and economic development, sustaining economic vitality, protecting public health and safety, and protecting the operational missions of the installation.

What is a Joint Land Use Study?

A Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) is a cooperative land use planning effort conducted as a joint venture between an active military installation, surrounding jurisdictions, state and federal agencies, and other affected stakeholders. The Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane JLUS is funded by a grant from the Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) and contributions by Daviess County, Greene County, Lawrence County, Martin County, and Sullivan County. The JLUS effort can directly benefit both NSA Crane and the surrounding region by:

Protecting the health and safety of surrounding residents and workers;

Preserving long-term land use compatibility between NSA Crane and the surrounding communities; Promoting community planning; and Encouraging cooperation between the military installation and community officials.

Crane traces its roots to the Farmers Securities Administration

of the Franklin Roosevelt administration. From 1935-39, the

FSA purchased about 32,000 acres in Martin County that had

been foreclosed and abandoned because of the area’s poor soil

and erosion, and employed workers to return it to forest. An

800-acre lake, a marina, arboretum, cabins, campsites and

miles of hiking trails were built and dedicated Sept. 15, 1939,

as a recreation area. After World War II began in Europe, U.S.

Navy surveyors were on site drawing up plans to create a

secure inland ordnance facility for production, testing, and

storage of explosives, bombs, etc. An additional 35,000

contiguous acres were purchased and on Dec. 1, 1941, the

Naval Ammunitions Depot, Burns City, was dedicated. In May

1943, the depot was renamed the Naval Ammunition Depot,

Crane, in honor of Commodore William Montgomery Crane, the

Navy’s first Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance. As the complexity

and sophistication of weapons increased over the decades,

Crane’s activities, capabilities and expertise expanded in scope

to meet these demands.
