07 USAG Yongsan Tours

Did you know that Zip Lining was created

as a means of transportation and not a

sport? In 1897, an interesting book called

“The Invisible Man” by H.G. Wells was published.

The book was about a man who rode a cable (called an

incline strong) in incredible speeds as he covered

difficult terrains without having to walk which

basically put the idea of Zip Lining out there. Zip

lining was created out of mere necessity and was used

mostly by people who lived in remote areas that were

difficult to access. They would transport people and

goods from one area to another and by this, they would

save time and risks associated with traveling on the

ground. Although the exact origin of Zip Lining is not

known, it is believed that people from the Himalaya

Mountain Ranges in India have been using Zip Lining

as a form of transportation for more than a century.

They would transport large logs that were needed to

build homes and coal for other purposes. So how did

Zip Lining come from being a necessity to a fun and

exciting sport? During the 1970’s, thrill seekers and

those looking to overcome their own fears went to Zip

Lining companies to fulfill this need. Later, this

brought attention to the activity and sparked an

interest to college students, professors and researchers.

They wanted to understand the science and their own

resilience as they sped away on the lines. In 1992, Zip

Lines were used to help create the movie “The

Medicine Man” to capture extraordinary shots.

Nowadays, Zip Lining is a popular and

fun way to relieve stress, spend time

with family and friends and you can

even test your own limits. There are thousands

of Zip Lining locations throughout the world and

most of these are built on top of beautiful scenic

areas. According to adventuretravel.about.com, the

best Zip Lining areas are in Maui, Utah, New

Hampshire, Colorado, Kauai, Alaska, North

Carolina and Ohio. If you’re ever in one of

these locations, plan on taking a few hours off to

The Community Recreation Division (CRD) in

Patrons can sign up at Moyer or K-16 Community

The great part is no previous experience is necessary to join your local US Army Rugby Korea team. Presently there are enough experienced team members who are experienced to train non-experienced players. “Biggest focus for new players is to omit all knowledge of football prior to playing rugby and to be relatively in good shape due to the demands of the game”, explains Captain Palacios. The cost to join is free but members need to go to USARugby.org and register for a CIP number which costs thirty five dollars and also need to pay ninety eight thousand WON for a kit, team jersey, shorts and socks. If you’re interested in joining your local rugby team join by; sending a message to US Army Rugby Korea’s Facebook, email [email protected], or contact Captain Palacios at 010-2731-8441 or email him on his Global email account. Another way to join is show up at practice. USAG Yongsan’s Rugby practice is held on every Tuesday from 2000-2130 at Field #12 next Collier Community Fitness Center Parking Lot and every Saturday from 1000-1200 at Seoul American High School Field. Community members are welcome to participate by attending games and cheering from the sidelines. The next rugby opportunity will be held either the twelfth of nineteenth of November featuring an EXPACT team and Military rugby team at the Seoul American High School Field. Dates can be verified at the above contact information tools. Thank you to Captain Palacios for making a positive impact to our community and I hope to see all US Military Instillations have a rugby team in the near future. 23 Back to School

◘ The school hours have been altered. For Seoul American Elementary school, school hours will be from 0745-1410 and for seoul american middle school and seoul american High school, school hours will be from 0840-1520.

◘ This year, the students’ bus passes can be picked up at the Hannam Village Community Center on august 17th from 1200-1600, in the Yongsan px lobby on august 18th from 0930-1400, and at building 3706 seoul student Transportation Office(STO) on August 20-24 from 0730-1630. Plan

accordingly and don’t forget to pick up the bus passes!

august can be seen as one of the last months of sumer and it’s also the month whenall the

kids go back to school. Yes, that’s right kids, it’s that time of the year again! It’s the time where many kids are waiting to see all their friends again while the others are dreading the thought of having to wake up early. the 2012-2013 school year will officially kick off on August 27th, 2012. although the break might have seemed short, the excitement of shopping for school necessities, meeting new people, and reuniting with friends cannot be ignored.

FOR MILITARY FAMILIES It can be difficult to settle down in new places because of always having to move; particularly, more difficult for children. starting a new school can always be scary and frightening however, it’s something that all Military children have to face. Fortunately, being a part of a military community

can help the child adjust because they will soon realize that they’re not alone. the schools in the Yongsan community provide many activities and services for their students. For example, the school provides a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities such as model United Nations (m.U.N) and sports teams. By participating in these activities, students can make a lot of new friends. additionally, students can get involved with Child, Youth and school services (CYss). parents can register their child at parent Central and afterwards, their child will be eligible to participate in a majority of the CYss programs (depending on their age group). the child can hang out with friends, make new friends, play games, or go on field trips. a great program within CYss is the 2012 summer Youth sponsorship program. this program is designed to welcome transitional children into the community. the program will offer tours and activities during the

summer (until 17 august) which will take place every Friday and by the time school starts, your child will feel like he/she has been living here for years! registrations will be taken at any of the seoul american schools and the program is open for all students (grades 1-12). For more information on the 2012 summer Youth sponsorship program, please call 738-5556.

it may also be good to consider getting a physical and eye exam for your child before the

new school year begins. if your child wants to participate in school sports, a signed release form may be required and getting this before school starts could save you and your family a ton of time. another important factor to consider is healthy lunches. Nutrition plays a large role in academic performance and studies have shown that children who eat balanced, healthy breakfasts and lunches are more alert throughout the day and earn higher grades than those who don’t eat healthy meals.

It’s a brand new school year so make sure your child kicks the year off with a great start! there are a few changes that need to be considered:
