Community Choral Project 2016

The Joondalup Festival is the spectacular finale to the City of Joondalup’s summer events season. Celebrating 18 years in 2016, it is the northern corridor’s largest and most significant community event: a two-day feast of arts and cultural happenings. Over the festival weekend the City showcases a combination of international performances, local artists and community engagement projects in the Twilight Lantern Parade and the Community Choral Project.

For the first time in 2013, the City of Joondalup showcased a Community Choral Project as part of the official opening to the Festival. The City commissioned composer Alberto Caruso and writer Vivienne Glance to create a new community choral work called Banuru Songs to be performed as a world premiere by individuals, ensembles, school groups and community choirs from Joondalup and beyond.

In 2014, the City commissioned MacMusiCo comprised of Carole Macintyre and Bill McAllister, to create an eight-part harmonic arrangement of songs that explored the 1950’s and themes of travel and migration. Members of Perth Harmony Chorus and Vocal Evolution (two Perth based barbershop choirs) along with 100 community members came together to perform Back to Barbershop! as part of the festival finale.

In 2015, the Community Choir cemented itself as one the City’s leading community engagement projects receiving unprecedented positive feedback for the production of West End Wonder under the musical direction of Jangoo Chapkhana. The performance attracted 130 performers from the community and local choral groups. Accompanied by professional soloists Brendan Hanson and Sharon Kiely along with a band. The choir performed an arrangement of classics from hit musicals including Grease, Les Miserables and Rent.

The Community Choral Project is critical for participation, growth and maturation of the arts sector in Joondalup. In 2014, the City of Joondalup endorsed plans for a new performing arts and cultural facility in the Joondalup City Centre and the City envisions this project as one that will ensure engagement with the cultural plans for the City’s future and thus will return in 2016 as A Hard Day’s Night.

The City is proud to announce that the Community Choral Project returns for its fourth year, featuring two highlight performances on Sunday 20 March 2016. A Hard Day’s Night promises to take participants on a journey back to the 1960’s when English rock band The Beatles formed in Liverpool and grew to become widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era.

The concert will be programmed twice (3.45pm and 6.00pm) on Sunday 20 March 2016 and participants will need to be available for both performances.

Under the expert musical direction of Jangoo Chapkhana, participants will be inspired by an up-beat programme interspersed with some beautiful ballads to include All You Need Is Love, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, The Fool on the Hill, When I’m Sixty-Four and Yesterday.

As the Community Choral Project enters its fourth year the City anticipates there will be many returning members from previous years. For your information there are a few key changes to the project in 2016 as detailed below:

• Learning Materials will cost $15.00, cash payable at the first rehearsal.

• There will be no learning tracks produced in 2016.

• The performance has been programmed in a new venue The Commonwealth Cube. This venue is purpose built for theatre and music productions and for this reason was selected to showcase the Community Choir. There is a 200 person seating capacity inside this venue.

• Each participant will be allocated two tickets only, for either the 3.45pm or 6.00pm show.

Community Choral Project 2016

Whilst the City endeavors to ensure all participants can invite family and friends, the festival is a community event and the general public will want to watch the performance on Sunday 20 March 2016.

To ensure members of the public will be able to watch the performance at the Festival and all family and friends can see you perform at some point, the following measures will be put in place. Family and friends can attend:

• The penultimate rehearsal at Prendiville College on Wednesday 16 March 2016 7.30pm – 9.45pm; and/or

• The final technical rehearsal in The Commonwealth Cube, on Friday 18 March 2016 6.00pm – 8.00pm, Central Park, Joondalup City Centre.

Learning Materials will cost $15.00, cash payable at the first rehearsal. The City will be purchasing these in bulk and handing them out on the first night. If you are unable to make the first rehearsal for any reason, you can still collect them on the first night you attend. The charge is to cover the cost of purchasing the music rights and original music sheets from PrintMusicworks Australia.

The Community Choral Project is a community arts project open to all members of the community in particular those people who have always wanted to participate in a choir but never dared.

No experience is necessary and no auditions are required.

Register by completing the online form.

The rehearsal series will consist of 6 weeks of workshops that will focus on teaching participants their relevant parts for the performance and familiarising them with the program.

The rehearsals will be held throughout February and March 2016, and you can come to a few or all, it’s your choice. However, we do encourage you attend as many rehearsals as possible so you feel adequately prepared for the final performance.

All participants will be required for a full dress and technical rehearsal on Friday 18 March 2016 to address, lighting, sound and any other technical requirements.

Described by Neville Cohn as “a musical Midas, turning everything he touched into musical gold”, Jangoo Chapkhana is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most polished all-round musicians. A soloist, composer, choral specialist and jazz artist; he is a repetiteur at the University of Western Australia, teaches pianoforte at Edith Cowan University and is the Director of Music at Perth’s historic Trinity Uniting Church.

He has frequently been a soloist in cathedrals in the United Kingdom, South Africa, San Francisco, New Zealand, France and Sydney; and his career highlights include solo recitals in Westminster Abbey (London), Washington National Cathedral (USA) and Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Argentina). He is active as a jazz pianist and recently released his second album with his Trio - “Come Fly With Me”, celebrating the legacy of Frank Sinatra.

The City of Joondalup will make every effort to ensure the safety of participants in the Community Choral Project.

The City of Joondalup has public liability insurance that indemnifies the City against any act or omission of negligence by the City of Joondalup’s elected members, employees or volunteers.

Any person/s under 18 years of age must provide consent from a parent/guardian to participate in the project.

Adequate onsite parking at Prendiville College is available throughout the rehearsal period.
