COFINSP-17-ET PROJECT STARTING DATE: 17 th MARCH 2010 PROJECT COMPLETION DATE: 30 th SEPTEMBER, 2018 PROJECT CLOSING DATE: 31 st MARCH, 2019 Activities on implementation:- Beekeeping Growing different fruit trees (supported by irrigation) Weaving/2 farmers/ Livestock fattening and forage development Nursery management/forest/ The benefit after the implementation of PFM:- Economical:- Current/ present capital: 100,800 ETB Future benefit from fruits :- 18,000 coffee seedlings, 200 banana , 1,085 Avocado and 350 Mango have been planted 80,000 Grevillea seedlings have been planted Social:- Developing culture on discussion and working together for common benefit has been started Common vision is established Attractive land and scenic value and recreation Created Potential for research and teaching Air pollution reduction Access for medicinal plants Employment opportunity Environmental:- Insitu conservation for biodiversity (both flora and fauna) Carbon sequestration is improved Ground water recharge increased Improved microclimate realized Soil conservation efficiency enhanced A guideline for the PFM has been adopted as to the project and translated to local language /Amharic/. Currently by considering PFM in Mecha as a best practice, the project has been on the way to scale up in 4 other Woredas. Fruit plantation & Natural forest Beekeeping , Weaving & Fattening A breath taking natural forest rehabilitation after 5 years Back ground In one of the project supported Woreda/ District/ Mecha, Dilbetgle Kebele with a total beneficiaries 128(Female = 64 and Male = 64) an area of 47.5 ha have been under participatory Forest Management (PFM). The cooperative named as : Participatory Natural Resource Management & Tourism Development Cooperative has been Legalized and certified. The initial capital was 31,250 ETB (For which the members contribute as a PFM member) Goal The project goal is to improve livelihoods and contribute to poverty reduction for about 450, 000 poor rural households in the Lake Tana Watershed. Development Objective The development objective is to combat land degradation in the Lake Tana watershed through the introduction of natural resource conservation measures and the promotion and up-scaling of sustainable land management practices. The project will pioneer a new approach under the national SLM platform, which has been established in the spirit of TerrAfrica and the GEF’s Strategic Investment Programme (SIP).
