You tell us – it’s your area, it’s your news...

It is remarkable what can be achievedwhen people from a community (anycommunity) pull together to undertake aproject. A self evident example of thewords above is the soon to be openedBulwell Hall Boxing & Community FitnessClub, situated in the Totley CloseCommunity Centre, Bulwell Hall.

The success of this project could nothave become real without the amazing

support of so many (manybut not all are in thisphoto). They include; CllrEileen Heppell who helped us save thebuilding from demolition, Bulwell HallTenants & Residents Association, staff atthe Healthy Living Centre, NottinghamCity Council Officers, sponsorship anddonations from James Mellors, GeneWarburton of GM EnvironmentalServices, Sean Cunningham of plumbing

Trade Supplies, Pearce Signs, AndyBooth from Ilkeston Plumbing,Nottinghamshire Community Foundation, and local volunteers, especially MartinBootby.... We thank you all!

For information on the opening date andclub times call Barry on 07897 587054.

Top Valley Studentsget a taste for politics As part of the Local Democracy weekactivities, 20 students from Top ValleySchool & Engineering College attendedthe Council House and took part in ademocratic “dilemmas” debate.Students were allocated a budget andagainst a background of changingcircumstances, had to prioritise theallocation of the budget against a rangeof local initiatives and other worthycauses. Following the debate, whichwas chaired by Councillor Clark, students had an opportunity to see

behind the scenes and tour theCouncil House. This was amemorable day for allconcerned and really helpedstudents to understand thedifficulty in juggling theirpriorities and how best to spendtheir budget. Commentsreceived from the students included;

“It was an excellent day, it wasdifficult to help everyone, and reallyinteresting to see how decisionsare made.”

“It was fun to have the debate, butalso very serious and important, because some of the decisionswould help lots of people.”

Young people from Catch 22 and theJunior Youth Inclusion Project (nowcalled Targeted Youth Support Service)demonstrated some of their many talentsat two brilliant events.

Having successfully applied for £1,000from the Youth Opportunities Fund to

deliver a Fashion Show, a group ofyoung people spent the summerdesigning their collection and going tolocal charity shops to source materialsand accessories. They secured thesupport of local organisations, CCTlighting and The Lounge Hair and BeautySalon, whose donations helped make thenight look fantastic. The final event heldwas attended by over 150 guests.

Elsewhere, an end of summer showcasewas delivered to celebrate the hard workput in at workshops and sessions runover the summer holidays. Performancesincluded dance, fashion and music. Theshow was closed by a very brave singingsoloist and everyone that took partreceived a certificate. One parent said; “itwas lovely to see the work my son hasbeen putting in.”

Everyone was nervous before bothevents but once on stage with the musicand slideshows they becameprofessional and loved every minute of it.

A massive thank you to all the proudfamily and friends who attended.

Your ShoutOnce again Bulwell is under siege

from the graffiti artist, I use this termlightly as the perpetrator is no ‘artist’.It is a shame that the person(s)involved cannot take an art courseand develop their talents on canvasinstead of random walls and fences.A lot of money is wasted to clean thismess off which could be better usedfor other things.

Councillor News

Local News From Your Area Councillors

CouncillorsYour local City Councillors want to improve the quality of life for all residents, and support local people to get involved inmaking decisions about the things that matter to you. If you have anything you wish to discuss or would like their view on astory you wish to contribute to the Community Arrow, do feel free to get in touch.

Bulwell Councillors John Hartshorne,Eileen Heppell and Ginny Kleincontinue with their regular ward walkswhich are a useful way of appreciatingenvironmental issues. They are awarethat fly tipping and dog fouling continueto be a problem in some areas. This isdisappointing as one phone call to theCity Council can enable removal ofbulky items at a time to suit you. Dogowners are responsible for removingtheir dog waste.

They also attend the Local Area Groups, where community safety issues andcrime are identified with localcommunity representatives and thepolice, in order to set local priorities.

Councillor Ginny Klein attended the shortlisting for this years Grab a Grand. Thewinner following the voting was theCommunity Garden on Bulwell Hall

Estate, which is being brought back intouse by enthusiastic local volunteers.

Councillors Heppell and Klein visited theTotley Close boxing club which isnearing completion, and look forward toits opening in the near future.

Councillors Hartshorne and Kleinattended the opening of the BulwellAcademy on the River Leen site, whichso far is occupied by Year 7 pupils only. They were pleased to see them in theirsmart new uniforms and Councillor Kleincommented they looked happy andenthusiastic. A tour of the site underconstruction was given; the promisedfacilities and total size of the buildingswere impressive. They look forward tovisiting the building when constructionis complete.

Bulwell Forest Councillors Alan Clarkand Eunice Campbell were both activelyengaged with events for LocalDemocracy Week 12th - 18th October.

On Monday 12th, Eunice and Alan hosteda group of Top Valley School studentswho came to observe question time at theFull Council meeting. They even heardtheir own question on cycling safety readby the Lord Mayor and answered by CllrUrquhart. Earlier in the afternoon, theymet the Leader of the Council.

On the Wednesday 14th, Alan led aparticipatory session for Year 7 and Year10 students called 'DemocraticDilemmas' in the Chamber at the CouncilHouse. Eunice also took part. Thishelped the students understand thepressures of choosing between various(theoretical) useful local projects whenthere is not enough money to financethem all, and when some people mightnot support them.

On the Thursday 15th, Eunice and Alanattended the unveiling of the PublicInformation Pillar in Bulwell Market Place. This was part of an event that broughttogether displays on local projects such

as Bulwell Joint Service Centre andNeighbourhood Regeneration.

“The pillar is a great reflection of the jointworking of our Neighbourhood Team withPolice,” said Eunice. “The pillar is full ofuseful contact numbers such as 'Rat on aRat' and Crimestoppers.”

Bulwell Forest Councillor Gerry Davie ispleased to report that a successfulcampaign resulted in the removal ofpaint from a number of drives onHenrietta Street in Bulwell. He has alsobeen delighted to attend the grandopening of the Southglade Library onSouthglade Park, and to support a groupof local residents in a walk of the RiverLeen in Bulwell.
