There is much going on with CASA this semester -
speakers, classes, U21 events, SafeRides, Junior
Prom, Drug Awareness Week (DAW), Rx Drug
Drop-off, and of course the annual “Look of Los
Gatos” Fashion Show!
It’s inspiring that so many parents and students are
engaged in CASA activities that foster healthy
lifestyle choices that help our young people resist
alcohol and drugs. Join us at our February 13
General Meeting to hear a LGHS student and DUI
survivor talk about her “Risk to Reason”
transformation. In March we will hear about Non-Violent Communication between parents and kids, and
on May 8, Chief Seaman, LGMSPD will discuss the Social Host ordinance and what that means,
especially around prom at the New Police Department. And last, but not least, thanks for your support.

Critical Conversations: Encouraging Productive Parent-Child
Dialogues on Substance Use
Do you have kids in grades 5 –12? If so, you may want to
learn how you can:
Debunk common myths of substance use
Identify the indicators of addiction
Discover strategies for reducing risk
Open a dialogue between teens and the parents
who walk beside them
Listen to the above in an interview with Dr. John
Mendelson, M.D. Dr. Mendelson conducts research on the human effects of commonly abused drugs
and develops new treatments for addiction. He is also the father of two teenage boys and understands
the difficulties parents and emerging adults have in understanding the risks for developing addiction or
other complications of drug use. He explains the current scientific understanding of addiction without
jargon and at a level accessible to all.
The interviewer is Darin Conway, LCSW, PPSC, Los Gatos High School Site Director with CASSY.
To submit confidential questions that may be discussed: [email protected].
This event, sponsored by CASA and the Lion’s Club of Los Gatos, will be on Tuesday, February 11, 7-
8:30p at the Los Gatos High School Library. Admission is free.

SafeRides
Going Strong
Karla Albright, SafeRides Executive Director
Calls are growing. Volunteers are increasing. Our impact on our community is
being felt.
Read more about our recent activities:
We had another training the hour before a Friday shift to train Reality Check staff who then
worked SafeRides that night. The kids had a blast. Everyone was involved in at least one call
and pick up.
We are hosting our first Fresh/Soph night on 2/7.
The LGHS diving team will be staffing a SafeRides night in March. It is a great way to do some
team building and provide a needed service for the local teens that benefits the whole
community.
Student board members staffed an information table at 8th grade orientation. They are also
going to do a brief presentation at the CASA meeting explaining the program.
Call on volunteers:
We are accepting applications for next year's Board open to any
current sophomore or Junior student. We are particularly interested in
sophomores. Contact [email protected] if you want an application.
We are starting to plan the end of the year banquet to honor all of
our dedicated volunteers. If you have any raffle prizes that you would like
to donate for use at the Banquet, please contact [email protected]
Please support our program by liking our Facebook page called Los

Givium “Spring Cleaning” Campaign Launches
Thuy Tang, Board Member & LGHS Rep
CASA has partnered with the new, local company Givium to help you sell all
your unwanted “stuff” online. Through this site, a percentage of sales will be
donated to CASA to enable CASA to continue its important programs for our
youth. The inaugural 2014 Spring-Cleaning for CASA event will run through the month of March. Help
us make this virtual event a success and achieve our goal of raising much needed funds for CASA!
On how to help, follow the 3 easy steps as follows:
1. Sign up at www.givium.com and select CASA as
your favorite charity. Invite your friends to do the same.
2. List your re-gifts for sale and donate a percentage to
CASA using Givium’s mobile apps or Website.
3. Advertise your re-gifts on Craigslist, Facebook, and
Twitter. When they sell, CASA gets a donation and you get a
tax deduction!
You may also like to know that CASA will partner with MADD
(Mothers against Drunk Driving) again this year for Drug Awareness Week (DAW) scheduled for the
week of March 17. Activities are being planned and if you would like to help, please contact
[email protected]. They include a student's art/poster/YouTube contest with cash prizes, student
Information booth, assembly speaker, the crash car trailer, and other educational activities for students.

Editor’s Corner
Dangers of Flavored Cigars & E-cigarettes
Lily Lu, MFTi
Increasingly, tobacco products and e-cigarettes include fruit- and
candy-flavors such as fruit loops, gummy bears, and cotton candy.
These sweet flavors entice kids and teens to get them hooked for a
lifetime. A recent study, “Flavored Little Cigar and Flavored Cigarette
Use among US Middle and High School Students”, that appeared in the Journal of Adolescent Health,
found that over 40 per cent of middle and high school smokers are using flavored little cigars and
cigarettes.
Little cigars remain unregulated by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) even though the Tobacco Control
Act prohibited the sale of candy-flavored cigarettes
starting in September 2009. The FDA currently does not
have restrictions on advertisers nor are there federal
age restrictions preventing children from buying e-
cigarettes.
As we all know, the use of tobacco products including
cigars is unhealthy. Toxic chemicals like those in
cigarettes are also found in smoking pipes and cigars. These can cause disease and death. The US
Surgeon General and the National Cancer Institute have confirmed that cigar smoking can cause
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus and lung,
as well as heart disease.
The FDA warned that “smoking any kind of tobacco product increases the risk of developing serious
health problems, including lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema. Tobacco products that are not
smoked, such as snuff and chewing tobacco, have also been shown to cause gum disease and
cancers of the mouth”. The FDA is examining options for regulating both menthol cigarettes and
flavored tobacco products other than cigarettes.
In a 2013 report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed concerns about e-
cigarettes which included the “potential negative impact of nicotine on the adolescent brain
development, as well as the risk for nicotine addiction and initiation of the use of conventional cigarettes
or other tobacco products.”
Did you know that each day almost 3,000 youth under 18 smoke a cigar for the first time and 15.7
percent of all high school boys are current cigar users? Were you aware that in 2012 some 1.8 million
middle and high school students said they tried e-cigarettes? Is your child at risk?

Reminder
Serving, Providing, or Selling Alcohol to Minors
It is illegal to serve alcohol to minors. The age of the
person selling or giving alcohol to anyone under 21 does
not matter. If you give, sell, or provide alcohol to someone
under the age of 21, it is a crime.
The key provision is in the Business and Professions code
25 658 which said in Section (a) that any person who sells,
furnishes, or gives or causes to be sold, or furnished
alcoholic beverages to anyone under age 21 is guilty of a
misdemeanor.
Punishments for this crime are spelled out in Section (2)
which provides that someone violating the law ... "shall be fined $1000, no part of which shall be
suspended, and the person shall be required to perform not less than 24 hours of community
service ...." The court normally adds a 265% penalty assessment to all fines ($1,000.00 +
$2,650.00 = $3,650.00) and a $20.00 court security fee and probationary fees at up to $64.00 per
month for every month you are on probation. In addition, the defendant may have to pay attorney fees.
There are significantly harsher penalties called for in section (3) which applies to a situation in which
someone provided a person under 21 years of age alcohol and that individual either injured himself or
someone else.
The statute goes on to Section (g) that says "the penalties imposed by this section do not preclude
prosecution or imposition of penalties under any other provision of law including ... Section 272 of the
Penal Code and 13202.5 of the vehicle code." The vehicle code section allows a judge to suspend the
defendant's driver's license. The Penal Code 272 is a section that deals with contributing to the
delinquency of a minor person and allows for imprisonment in county jail for up to a year plus five years
formal probation and a fine of $2,500.
Section 25658.2 provides that if a parent or legal guardian knowingly permits alcohol consumption or
drug use by someone under 18 in their home and that minor then drives under the influence the parent
is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine (plus 265% penalty assessment) or both. So not
only can your teen get into trouble, you, as parents, can get into serious trouble.
