Contemporary Research Introducing Three Products For EntertainmentAt This Year’s ShowRICHMOND, Va. — For years, Jeff

Autor of Houston, Texas dreamed of hav-ing a state of the art home theater. Aftersome careful planning and in-depth re-search, he was able to construct the view-ing room of his dreams with acousticaltreatment from Acoustical Solutions, Inc.

“My home theater journey finallybegan in 2008, when I decided to bite thebullet and build a new home,” said Autor,“after doing a lot of searching and pric-ing, it became clear that if I wanted a ded-icated theater, I was going to have tobuild new and custom.”

Attention was paid to every detail ofthe space. With a project of this scale, everything from the color palette andwoodwork to the sound system and seat-ing had to be as Autor imagined it. If hewas going to finally make this dream the-ater a reality, he wanted to do it right.

Autor knew that he would have to dosome level of soundproofing to keepfrom disturbing other areas of the houseor neighborhood. The 16 foot x 22 footunfinished space, would also need noisecontrol for optimum sound quality insidethe theater.

When Autor looked for acousticaltreatment, he did a lot of shoppingaround. He wanted the products to

improve acoustics and look great with thedesign he had in mind: “as part of the de-sign and color selection…and havingseen the SoundSuede at an installation, Ireally liked that look. Perhaps it’s thecommercial look and feel of the fabricpatterns that sent me in that direction.”

Acoustical Solutions ArchitecturalSales Representative Aaron Duncan wasfirst acquainted with Jeff Autor at a tradeshow, the CEDIA EXPO, in Indianapolis.

“Roaming the show floor at CEDIAhelped a lot,” said Autor, “I took mythoughts to the vendors’ booths. The guysat Acoustical Solutions (Aaron Duncan)were very helpful, took a look at theplans, offered some advice, and sent mesamples of both the fabrics and the edgefinishes. After some comparison shop-ping, that’s who I went with.”

Autor used 1 inch thick SoundSuedefabric wrapped acoustical panels in thecolor Cordovan from Acoustical Solu-tions to cover upper and lower levels ofhis theater walls. SoundSuede panelshave a noise reduction coefficient of upto 1.15, meaning that they absorb virtu-ally all sound waves reaching the paneleliminating the chance of reverberation

perspiration can wreak havoc on the per-formance of miniature microphones. Notso with the H6. The H6 provides excel-lent moisture resistance: the entire head-set can be placed underwater withoutbeing damaged. Further reinforcing thismicrophone’s first-rate water resistantperformance is the fact that the micro-phone’s cable detaches at the headset andemploys a new double-sealed watertightconnector.

The H6 Headset Microphone’s cablecarries additional benefits—key amongthem is its strength. The slim, 1.2 mil-limeter cable offers a break strength ex-ceeding 44 pounds. (20 kilograms)—anattribute that is certain to be appreciatedby theatrical performers who frequentlychange costumes and frequently ‘pull’ thecable up from underneath wardrobe. Thisinterchangeable cable is also the interfaceto a myriad of wireless microphone sys-tems. Switching among different wirelesstransmitter packs is as easy as swappinga cable. The new H6 and its various ca-

bles interface to nearly all wireless trans-mitters, digital recorders or XLR mic in-puts with phantom power.

Chris Countryman, President ofCountryman Associates, commented onthe company’s new H6 Headset Micro-phone, “The new H6 delivers exceptionalaudio quality, rugged build quality, supe-rior fit for comfortable, distraction-freeperformance and the ability to interfacewith a wide range of wireless equipment. It’s available in both omni and directionalversions, with the directional version pro-viding a tight polar pattern for excellent

isolation from ambient noise and feedback. With superior moisture resistance and itsability to be all but invisible when worn,I’m confident this microphone will findmany a home with broadcasters, theatricalgroups, houses of worship, theme parksand more.”

Whenyou listen through in-ear monitors, youneed effects: tone control and panning inorder to get the sound right. There is sim-ply no listening fatigue with myMix. You

cannot achieve this kind ofsound by controlling an auxsend from the consolethrough a wireless app. Thesuccess of myMix is in thedetails, and we paid veryclose attention to the details, which is why music schools,HOW, live bands and per-forming arts facilities arechoosing myMix. It really does raise thebar for everybody else.

Q: This InfoComm you are launch-ing myMix Control, a remote controlfor your personal monitor mixingsystem. Isn’t that a contradiction tosome degree?

A: Not at all. We heard from biggerinstallations that they needed the abil-ity to control entire systems from oneaccess point. Engineers from produc-tion companies and theaters were ask-ing for a solution to configure andback up complete system settings.(We have some performing facilitieswith more than 70 units.) We

responded with myMixControl, which allowsengineers wired or wire-less remote control of theentire myMix systemfrom wherever he/shelogs in. myMix Controluses a web browser-based interface to logonto a myMix system

through an Ethernet connection orwireless device and allows configura-tion, lock-out and editing of all param-eters within a myMix set up. Engineerscould already listen to the individualmixes—now they can log on, checkand tweak the mix if one of their per-formers or musicians needs support.

We are at the point where we can saymyMix has evolved into a highly re-garded professional audio tool. Every-thing it does serves a purpose and addsvalue to the musical experience. First time exhibitor DC Connect (Booth#N877) comes to infoComm2012 with aunique interactive technology called‘[i]cells.’ [i]cells are a ‘no touch’ gestureand proximity activated interface. Theyare used in display interactives with a va-riety of content and can be programmedto have a variety of behaviors. The tech-nology gets the user out of the monitorframe of a touch screen and into a humanscale interface they can explore, browseand control at their own pace and wheretheir interest leads them.

How It WorksThe approximate 6 inch x 6 inch celltiles light up when triggered by thewave of a hand, responding to electro-

static sensitivity and sends a signal to aPC. The sensing technology allows thecells to be placed behind a variety ofsurfaces such as fabric, acrylic or glassand still be able to activate. A graphicis printed or mounted on these translu-cent surfaces to help guide the userthrough the content.

The signal sent to the computer startsa programmed function tied to that par-ticular cell; such as the playing of avideo. Other functions can include theplaying of an image with a separatesound file, a lone image, a lone sound, acombination image first then video, aswell as other possible functions. The usercould leave the current content or inter-rupt playback by activating any other cell

thereby jumping over to differ-ent content immediately.

Content files are usuallyJPEGs and MOVs. Since theyare simple to create in somebasic authoring software, itgives the system owner controlover their content. To replaceit, only a basic understandingof how to rename files in Windows; ‘dragand drop;’ overwrite files and other basicfile management skills are needed.

ApplicationsDC Connect offers a variety of products intheir [i]connect line in addition to customconfigurations. Two of these are the [i]con-nect KIOSK and [i]connect DISPLAY.

The KIOSK is an 8 cell all-in-oneunit, ideal for both permanent and travel-ing exhibits. It is a 93 inch x 39 inch alu-minum frame with a custom-printedfabric face and is only 3 inches thick.

The DISPLAY is a 12 cell all-in-one unit built into a 40 inch x 30 inch x5 inch cabinet that is mounted to a wall.It has a glass or acrylic face with a rearapplied graphic.

and echo. He also used two 5 foot x 2inch SoundSuede bass traps, installed inthe rear corners of the room to eliminatestanding waves and acoustically tune thetheater. Autor decided on a beveled edgefor these, which he thought looked the

most like something for a residentialproject.

Another concern for Autor was howto mount the panels to his walls. He didnot want to use adhesive for fear of dam-aging the wall, and was also wary of im-paling clips, which may damage thepanel or fabric if not used correctly.

“Aaron recommended the Z-clip

solution, which is simply a two-piecebracket that mates as you hang the panelover it (like a picture hook). After a fewmissteps with my laser level, hanging thepanels only took a few hours,” said Autor.

Aside from looking great and beingeasy to install, the panels achieved en-hanced sound quality for the room.

“After putting the panels up, the

sound difference in the room is easy tohear”, said Autor, “While the basic slap-echo reverb had disappeared…the roomwas obviously still fairly live. Therewere some points in the rear of the roomwith terrible reflections, and these allwent away with the panels in place. There’s a definite difference with thepanels installed.”
