COMMUNICATION AND QUALITY IN INTERPRETING
AND TRANSLATION
5.Quality
Quality 1: The Criteria for good translation 2: Discourse & quality Components 3: The Perception of quality: positions
The Sender The Receiver of the target-language text The Client The Translator Revisor 4: The perception of quality: Motivation & attention 5: Behavioral components of quality 6: Social status & quality 7: Teaching suggestions
Criteria
1.In translation, degree of success in communication
depends on sender & receiver’s aim(s).
2.Translator can help senders acheive their aim(s) but it can not
be expected to guarantee their fullfillment since the statement(s) may be psychologically, socially, Informationally,…inadequate or
receivers may lack the necessary back ground knowledge, intelectual
aptitude, motivation to understand the message.
3.Translator knows much less about subject or technical & scientific terms than sender &
receiver of the message .
Discourse and quality components
1.Text can be analyzed through content and package(form).
2. Good voice ,good layout of printed page occasionally can convince a listener or reader more than the quality of the idea and information that is
delivered.conversly good content can be
weekened by poor style, inaccurate terminology, poor
voice,…
Perception of quality in translation: context independent criteria
Ideational clarity; Linguistic acceptability; Terminological accuracy;
Professional Behavior; Fidelity on one side; Price consideration.
Perception of quality: position of these people as assessors
*The Sender
sender may understand target language well enough to assess fidelity and inaccuracies .
Their assessment capacity can be influenced by their subjective feelings.
*Receiver of target language text
Receivers can see only the target –language text and judge the
clarity, linguistic acceptability, terminological accuracy,
logical consistancy of translationand can not directly check its
fidelity.
In simultaneous interpreting
spot-checking of words or group of words can be done by listening to isolated sentences or sentence
endings in source speech
or
A delegate can do this checking and assess the
packing but s/he is not in a good position to assess
content fidelity.
In consecutive interpreting
situation is different. If the delegates understanding of both languages is good enough, they are in a good position to assess the quality of interpreting
regarding of individual segments.
*The client
Client does not know much about subject . s/he is not in good position to assess the quality of the translation.
*The translator
The translator is a Sender and a Receiver and knows both languages but generally knows less about the
subject , phrasology and terminology than Sender & Receiver , but s/he is in
better position than both of them.
*Revisors
they have appropriate extra-linguistic knowledge
to assess translation quality.
The perception of quality: Motivation and attention
quality assessment also depends on the motivation of the actors and the motivation they devote
to quality evaluation ex.s/he may be interested in
particular pieces of information and disregard the rest.
Behavioral components of quality
professional translation is a professional service and its
quality is judged by text-related parameters and other aspects of
service such as:
professional ethics;professionalism;
responsible behavior;dignity without arrogance;
cleanliness;appropriate clothing style;
being on time;good relation with colleagues;and even active cooperation in the booth and with technicians
Rules to be thought
- use cough(mute) botton rather than microphone
off botton ; volume change may disturb delegates markedly.
-
-Avoid excessive movement in the booth
which causes fluctuation in the volume.
-Avoid rustling papers infront of microphone.
-Keep your booth tidy and arrange working
documents
Social status and quality
one recurrent theme in translation meetings is the low social status of the profession .
Top-level practitioner should raise the general status of the
profession and lower-level practitioner should up grade
their qualification( losing one’s temper , showing off, acting
irresponsibly will tend to undermine this status)
Teaching suggestion
-explain quality around communication
-skopos and other functional theories can be used as general
frame work-systematiclly analyze the
message, the reader, the speaker-give information to guide
decision – making.
