Mission Statement: Rose Haven is a day shelter and community center for women, children and gender non-conforming folks experiencing homelessness, abuse and other life disruptions. Our mission is to maintain a safe and respectful community, while providing our guests with support and services to assist them in regaining stability in their lives. Organizational Background: Rose Haven's low-barrier model makes us the first point of contact for many who are seeking social services, and we offer sanctuary where individuals and families in crisis can come to seek supplies and support to regain independence. We have been a trusted resource for this unique population for more than 20 years, originating as a program of Catholic Charities in 1997, and reincorporating and moving to our present location in NW Portland in 2007. Programs: At Rose Haven we break the cycle of homelessness by providing nutritious meals, clothing, first aid, mailing addresses, hygiene, restrooms, showers as well as educational programs and guidance through medical and social services. Our staff advocates help each unique guest navigate her options and rebuild her life. By meeting basic needs and building trust, we empower people to explore long-term change. Snapshot of Rose Haven's services from 2017 (2018 stats available after 1/24/19): 3,383 women and children visited Rose Haven 20,389 times for supplies and support 20,106 nutritious meals were served 4,473 one-on-one advocacy appointments held which resulted in housing, medical support, employment and life saving referrals 5,105 hygiene kits distributed 5,442 individual shopping appointments for clothing and supplies 5,101 visits for educational and socialization classes and activities 1,944 shower appointments Who We Serve: People come to Rose Haven from all over the metro area with different struggles; however the unifying factor in our community is poverty. While many of our guests are living outside, in emergency shelters and in transitional housing, we also have a large population who are able to continue living in stable housing because they rely on us for supplies, services and support. Mental illness, physical illness and addiction afflict homeless women and children at a rate of 50% more than for the general population. Rose Haven plays an important role by providing safety and emergency services during the daytime when night-shelters are closed and families have no place to go. On average, 100 guests access our services daily, and 3,500 annually. Fifty percent (50%) of women served at Rose Haven are minorities, and 18% of guests surveyed identify as LGBTQ+. In 2018 we served 75% women/gender variant adults and 25% children. Rebekah Albert, Rose Haven's Executive Director, was recently recognized by The City of Portland for her commitment to Equity, Inclusion and Diversity; winning a 2017 Spirit of Portland Award for her work in this area. Our Challenge: The latest Point in Time Count survey results shows the rate of homeless women in Multnomah County has increased 16% since 2015, and the rate of women accessing emergency shelters has doubled. It indicates that one of the fastest-growing demographics of homeless people in Multnomah County is those with physical or mental disabilities, jumping 16% since 2015 and now making up 72% of the homeless population. The number of homeless students in Oregon increased 5.6% in 2017. Families with children make up 15.7% of those who were experiencing homelessness in Oregon. ROSE HAVEN
