MON, SEP 97:00–9:00pmFIRST MONDAY JAZZ PRESENTS

Year of Women in Jazz: SitarsysShanta Nurullah’s Sitarsys brings together western and eastern instruments played by a stellar group of creative musicians. Since its inception in December 2015, Sitarsys has performed in the Chicago area at venues such as Elastic Arts, the Chicago Jazz String Summit, the Evanston World Arts and Music Festival and First Monday Jazz. Shanta’s signature sitar style elicits the stomps, moans, and rhythms of blues and jazz, as well as the lyrical, dreamlike sounds most often associated with this East Indian instrument.

THU, SEP 197:00-9:00pmGREENLIGHT SERIES

Grown Folks StoriesGrown Folks Stories, created by Cara Brigandi and Eric Williams, founder and owner of The Silver Room, is two hours of five minute stories that range from the hilarious to the absolutely somber. Come join this ever-popular gathering of nonprofessional, unrehearsed storytellers, who give us the real stories we live everyday. There is no theme, no judging, no poetry, no readings. It’s storytelling that you’ve never experienced before. In Spirit + Structure is a solo exhibition presenting works by Nathan Miller.

This exhibition marks a moment in Miller’s continual examination of the sacred–in object and in place. Miller’s ruminations in faith are expressed through photography, sculpture, sound, and installation. The Black church operating in and occupying multiple planes, becomes a subject, a landscape, and a purpose in Miller’s work.

Nathan Miller was born in Evergreen Park IL in 1990 and grew up in the West Pullman neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Miller’s father, a Pentecostal preacher, artist, and educator, introduced him to music theory and photography. Through use of these mediums, Miller began to connect the temporal self to the eternal self. His work in photography, sound, sculpture, and public installation is an interdisciplinary translation of the spiritual within the context of the human experience. Miller has studied photography abroad at the University of Arts London (UK) and received a BFA degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2013, and MFA from Rhode Island School of Design.
