Joint Commission International
IMO Emergency DepartmentThe IMO’s Ophthalmic Emergency Department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For any problem, the patient can attend the clinic without prior appointment so that our medical team can examine and determine the seriousness of the emergency and medically or surgically treat it in the most appropriate way. Emergency surgery is performed by the IMO’s specialists.
• Immediate care • Early diagnosis • Urgent treatments and surgeries •
Our facilitiesIMO has an area of 24,000 square meters dedicated to comprehensive eye health care. We take medical and surgical care into account, but we also want to make the stay of our patients and their friends and family as pleasant as possible. That is why we offer spacious and comfortable spaces and a wide range of complementary services that help make your stay in the clinic easier and more enjoyable, such as parking and the Mimo café restaurant, also open to the general public, and which from Monday to Friday, offers breakfasts and lunches with fresh and top quality products as well as superb views over the city
In addition, our zeal for teaching leads us to organise national and international ophthalmology conferences and meetings in our convention area, fully equipped with a modern auditorium that can hold 300 people, as well as two workshops and a multi-purpose area. This area is adjacent to our gardens that host snacks, lunch, dinner or cocktails in an exclusive setting. All this equipment is also available to external companies that can organise their own events at IMO.
Where we areThe IMO is located near Junction 7 of Barcelona’s Ronda de Dalt ring road (mountain side) and can be accessed directly from Josep Maria Llado street.

A consistent track recordIMO’s prestige is largely due to its steadfast adherence to the values with which it initially committed itself to the world of private medicine in the mid-1980s.
Since then, more and more people put their trust in our commitment, experience and leadership. 2009 represented a major qualitative step forward for the IMO, when we moved to new premises boasting 70 consulting rooms, eight operating theatres and the capacity to carry out 65,000 consultations and perform 8,000 surgical procedures every year. Our team of 200 professionals enables us to undertake this work with a high quality of service and personalised treatment throughout the medical and surgical process.
The FoundationIn 2010, we created the IMO Foundation to improve people´s sight and, by extension, their lives. This aim moves us to foster continuous advances in diagnosing and treating any eye problem.
The Foundation has a track record of over 20 years in high quality research and education and has been the main driving force behind the implementation of a comprehensive programme of prevention activities aimed at safeguarding the visual health of the main risk groups, both in terms of eyes and socially. Furthermore, the recent launch of research projects into the genetic causes of eye diseases makes the IMO one of the few European centres that links basic and clinical research together, thanks to joint work between its ophthalmologists and geneticists.
A unique visionThe Instituto de Microcirugía Ocular (IMO - Institute of Ocular Microsurgery in English) is a leading international ophthalmology centre. Our hallmark is medical excellence and our objective is to provide the best service to the patient.
For over 25 years, we have sought to find solutions to all ocular disorders through the expert application of the best treatments. We have a highly specialised and committed medical team, the most advanced technology and spacious, comfortable and modern facilities. We are driven by medical excellence and quality customer service, embodied in a team committed to optimal patient care.
This has earned us the recognition of the medical community, which rated the IMO as the best ophthalmologic centre in Spain in the 2012 Top 10 Hospitals report drafted by the OCU Consumers’ and Users’ Association after interviewing Spanish doctors from different specialty areas.
Our medical protocol is based on being able to devote all of the time and resources necessary to each clinical case to ensure high-quality personalised attention. Patients who require it, for example, can be attended to by different specialists on the same day, thus simplifying the management and avoiding the scheduling of additional consultations.
International prestige and commitment to ophthalmology
The experience and teamwork of our ophthalmologists, each one of whom specialises in a different part of the eye, makes the IMO a leading international centre for combined surgical procedures and highly complex operations.
We are pioneers in the application of surgical instruments and techniques, which are always performed on an outpatient basis, are minimally invasive and designed to achieve the best immediate and long-term results.
On-going training and research are other cornerstones of our medical commitment. They enable us to discover new therapeutic opportunities and make advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems in a pioneering and effective manner.
We actively participate in research and clinical trials and are involved in training future generations of ophthalmologists through our specialised IMO master’s degrees, teaching at major medical schools and publishing scientific articles in international reference journals.
ALL SPECIALTIES AT THE SERVICE OF VISION
CRYSTALLINE LENSTransparent and springy body that allows the passage of light to the retina. Its main function is accommodation; to do this, it changes its curvature according to the distance of the image being focused on. It is our natural zoom lens.
CORNEAHemispherical and transparent structure at the front of the eye. Allows the passage of light, protects the eye from the outside and has refractive optical properties.
EYE LIDSMoveable mucous muscles that cover the eyes to protect them and keep them moist through lachrymal secretions. They are one of the main points addressed by oculoplastic surgery.
RETINA The layer of tissue that covers the back of the eye, on which images are projected before they reach the brain. It is formed by neurons and photoreceptor cells (rods and cones).
PAPILLA OR OPTIC DISCJunction between the eyeball and the optic nerve, which is what sends the images from the retina to the brain. Glaucoma can cause serious damage to this structure.
EYE MUSCLESAllow eye movements. If poorly coordinated, this can cause strabismus, a deviation of one or both eyes, which is a major childhood ocular pathology.
VITREOUSTransparent viscous gel between the retina and the lens that helps maintain the shape of the eye and to get an even retina surface

Diagnostic tests Through the Photography and Optometry areas, we offer morethan thirty tests to ensure the most complete and reliablediagnosis for each patient. These tests can be carried out onthe same day as the visit, even if they have not been previouslyscheduled. Specialist staff and state-of-the-art machinery allowus to offer the most advanced screening and diagnosis, whetherby ultrasound, fundus photography or contrast techniques, etc.
Vision therapy area The vision therapy area offers individualised optometric treatment to correct functional or perception difficulties relating to the visual system through the exercising and enhancing of certain skills. This service is always preceded by a visit by the ophthalmologist who, after several sessions, also determines whether the therapy should continue or conclude. The service is aimed at adults and children, a large percentage of whom experience learning difficulties.
Low vision area Specialised care for patients with low levels of vision:
• Evaluation of residual vision
• Prescription of optical and non-optical visual aids
• Advice and visual training for carrying out daily activities
