A true story…• Young man who went to the gym 3 times a week

• Became ill, went to GP, referred to local hospital

• Diagnosed with cardiomyopathy virus – referred to Wythenshawe Hospital

• “I could see him dying in front of my eyes”

• Eventually had a successful heart transplant

• Now recovering close to home –plans to run the marathon!

What is happening to specialised commissioning?

• NHS Commissioning Board rather than PCTs / CCGs.

• Moving from 10 SCGs and NSCT to single function

• National consistency – single policies, standards, contracts

• Equity & Excellence

Apologies for all the acronyms!

When?

• Now – the change is underway - National Commissioning Development Transition Team, led by Dame Barbara Hakin

• Shared Operating Model for PCTs (July 2011) - 10 SCGs to be clustered alongside new 4 SHA Clusters

• Measured transition and national workstreams

• 17+ service areas will be commissioned nationally by April 2012; more by April 2013.

E=CM2?

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler” Albert Einstein

Can we crack the code – can we make patient centred services reality?

• E = Excellence• C = Commissioning & Contracts• M 2 = Meaningful engagement x meaningful engagement
