GOVERNMENTEdinburgh Council HeadquartersEdinburgh, UK

Overview

Lighting at the new headquarters building for the City of Edinburgh council in New Street is being controlled by

a Spectrum lighting control system from ALC Lighting Controls, ensuring that a comfortable lit environment is

maintained with minimum energy consumption. The lighting is monitored and controlled through a central PC to

facilitate maintenance and re-configuration of the lighting should the need arise.

The sophisticated lighting management system comprises both pluggable and hard wired lighting control

modules (LCMs), as well as area controllers – all linked to a central PC. The lighting is controlled by PIR

occupancy sensors to ensure the lighting is only used when zones are occupied, backed by corridor linking to

ensure that exit routes remain illuminated. In addition, perimeter lighting is linked to photocells so that the lighting

can be dimmed in proportion to natural daylight levels while maintaining the design illuminance.

The use of pluggable LCMs, installed as part of a pre-fabricated wiring system, helped to reduce installation time

and costs. These, along with the hard-wired LCMs, are linked to area control units via a field bus, connected

back to ALC’s Spectrum graphical software. Through the software the building managers can easily re-configure

the lighting to reflect any changes in building usage, thus helping to maintain post-occupancy efficiency.

HEALTHCAREAyrshire Maternity Unit at Crosshouse HospitalKilmarnock, UK

Overview

Greengate’s Spectrum lighting management system is helping to ensure maximum energy efficiency for the lighting for the new Ayrshire Maternity Unit at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. Greengate is also working with facilities management company FES FM to ensure the lighting management is maintained and optimised in line with building usage.

Described as a new era in maternity services, the maternity unit is the focal point of a network of maternity outpatient facilities across Ayrshire and Arran, providing a comprehensive service from a single site. The unit embraces all aspects of maternity care from early pregnancy assessments and ultrasound to delivery and neonatal care.

A key consideration in the specification of the lighting management system was that many spaces in the maternity unit will experience variable occupancy through the day. It was important, therefore, that the lighting management strategy included occupancy control to ensure that spaces are not lit unnecessarily. This is achieved by linking the Spectrum system to passive infra red detectors in these spaces.

It was also anticipated that usage of spaces may change in the future, so the flexibility to reconfigure the lighting without additional cost or disruption was another key consideration. Any such changes can be quickly and easily carried out through Spectrum’s graphical software without changes to the hard wiring.

Optimised use of lighting through the Spectrum system also helps to extend lamp life, so that re-lamping cycles can be extended to reduce maintenance costs. Longer lamp life also reduces the cost of disposal of lamps through the life of the installation.

COMMERCIALGrasmere House at Lingley Mere Business Park Warrington, UK

Overview

United Utilities’ new shared services building, Grasmere House at Lingley Mere Business Park in Warrington is enjoying the energy-saving benefits of a Spectrum lighting control system from Greengate.

Providing over 4,300 m2 of floor space, the new building features large areas of glazing and will make very effective use of daylight, a factor that contributed to it gaining a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. Effective lighting management also makes a major contribution to the building’s environmental performance.

During the base build phase a Spectrum Lite system was fitted and this was subsequently upgraded to a full Spectrum system during the fit out, enabling United Utilities to take full advantage of the advanced functions. These include daylight dimming in office areas to exploit the natural daylight to the full, as well as occupancy control in meeting rooms.

This approach proved particularly flexible because it enabled a low cost base build with the inherent flexibility to upgrade the system with minimum changes during the fit out.

Another major benefit of the system is that it is easy to maintain without relying on pre-defined product addresses, thus facilitating the management of spare stock.

The lighting is controlled via Spectrum graphical software so that any future re-configuration can be implemented without changing the hard wiring, so that cost of ownership is lower. The ability of the Spectrum system to extend lamp life through its control of the lighting also reduces re-lamping requirements and the cost of disposal of waste lamps.

EDUCATION

Aquinas College, Stockport, UK

Overview

Greengate has created a bespoke lighting management system for Aquinas College in Stockport, combining high energy efficiency with the flexibility to accommodate the different activities in the spaces through the day.

The system comprises a range of lighting control modules (LCMs) and universal (light level and occupancy) sensors, with the LCMs linked to a PC. All of the luminaires use Tridonic DALI control gear and emergency modules.

The initial brief from Gifford included:

Maximum flexibility to reduce contractor involvement for any changes throughout the life of the installation• Provision of reports of any luminaire, lamp or battery failures via graphical software on a front end PC • Fully automated emergency testing and failure reporting via the graphical software.• A simple wiring philosophy to minimise maintenance time and maximise simplicity of ownership.• Maximum use of dimmable lighting to give the very best scenes for each space.•

Lighting in the teaching spaces is activated by an on/off switch by each door. Then absence and daylight control is used to dim the lighting row by row and turn off lights when the rooms are vacated. In addition, a ‘projection’ scene switch has been installed on each teaching wall to provide an easy transition to a customised lighting scene that prevents shadows and minimises contrast. This requires particular luminaires to be dimmed to a specified level when using the interactive whiteboard or overhead projector. This provides the perfect lighting situation without shadowing from the projector arm across the whiteboard or causing overbearing contrast levels.

In the evenings, corridors adjacent to occupied spaces remain lit at 50% of full light output to ensure safe movement for occupants, while lighting in corridors where rooms are unoccupied is switched off.

The result is a lighting system that can be easily adjusted and reconfigured to suit variable occupancy patterns and changes in the building, while optimising energy efficiency and usability. The college will also benefit from reduced maintenance costs through extended lamp life and by eliminating the need for manual testing of emergency lighting.

EDUCATION

Hackney Academy, Hackney, London

Overview

A versatile lighting management system from Greengate is helping the City of London KPMG Academy in Hackney, East London reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint. The inherent flexibility of the system has also enabled the school managers to fine tune the initial design in the light of experience once the building was occupied.

Opened by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the Academy has been recognised in many awards programmes and was winner of the New Build Project in the CIBSE Low Carbon Performance Awards 2010, This was in recognition of the sustainable learning environment that has been created.

Installed by MJN Colston, the lighting management system takes advantage of an architectural design that maximises natural daylight, ensuring that lighting is automatically switched off when daylight levels are sufficient. This is combined with occupancy control so that lighting is switched off after a predetermined time once areas such as classrooms, offices and toilets have been vacated.

Circulation spaces with high daylight levels have been designed to maximise ‘solar harvesting’. Here, The Greengate system ensures that when these spaces are unoccupied, and light levels are above a pre-defined level, the electric lighting is switched off.

A major factor in the choice of Greengate controls was their ease of re-configuration, as MJN Colston’s Doug Pugh explained: “As the building was unoccupied at the time of the build it was important that the lighting could be reconfigured easily once pupils and staff were using the building. Greengate was one of a number of controls manufacturers specified and we selected their system as it offered the necessary flexibility at a sensible price.

“For instance, since handover the school has asked for the time delay on occupancy sensors to be reduced in certain areas, so that lighting is switched off sooner. Greengate engineers were able to carry out these and other changes from a laptop without any disruption to the school’s occupants,” he continued.

As well as meeting the needs of its pupils, the Academy will be making a number of its facilities available to the wider community. Consequently the lighting management system has been designed to enable specific areas and connecting circulation spaces to remain lit while lighting in other areas is off.

The Greengate lighting management system comprises a combination of area controllers, lighting control modules and a range of sensors.

VETERINARY

Glasgow Small Animal Hospital

Overview

Situated at the entrance to the grounds of the Garscube Estate, Glasgow and part of the University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the new Small Animal Hospital provides state of the art services for animal owners and referring practitioners throughout Scotland and Northern England.

One of the chief concerns when conceiving the design for this facility was how to create a large hospital building without ruining the beautiful green space for which the Garscube Estate is renowned. Essentially, the solution involved lifting up the ground, peeling off the grass and placing the new building underneath.

Since various aspects of the new facility did not require natural light - much of its 4500 sq m involves internal spaces such as the treatment area, oncology and diagnostics - this design solution was able to meet the needs of the hospital whilst maintaining the integrity of the location.

The Greengate lighting control system is controlled by a single control room to manage the energy needs centrally. Energy can then be monitored and measured with targets set to reduce. Movement sensors, installed in each of the facility’s rooms, track movements and shuts down energy demand after 30 minutes of no movement.

In order to let daylight in to public areas, an innovative ‘crystal’ glass cupola, lit with different colours at night, sits within the building’s sloping grass roof.

Contracts Manager, James Mulroy, expressed his delight in being involved in such a state of the art facility that is leading the way in global veterinary research.
