The fishing season has ended for 2011

Greetings,

As the rest of the country winds down for the festive season, and well deserved breaks, we here at Z are still working hard on some things that really matter.

We have ramped up our re-branding programme and over 40 of our service stations have been re-branded to Z, as well as a number of our truckstops.

What is disappointing to me, and the rest of the Z team, is that over the last few weeks the New Zealand fuel industry has once again found itself short of diesel stocks in the South Island.

Once again there were several causes to this, including poor weather delaying shipments of fuel, and unexpected levels of sales in some locations. The underlying cause, however, is insufficient infrastructure. As an industry, we’ve underinvested in our infrastructure and, in short, we now don’t have enough storage in the right locations.

Reasons, excuses, call it what you will. We’ve owned this business for 18 months now and being a new company no longer holds any water. The bottom line is we shouldn’t be in the position of having to talk to our customers about things like this. We’re totally committed to sorting it out, for the benefit of our customers, and the country.

In October we opened 30 million litres of brand new bulk fuel storage at Lyttelton, and committed to another $50 million of investment in bulk fuel storage over the next three years. In the short term, we are holding much higher stock levels than we previously did and we have introduced more trucks to our distribution fleet. This improves our ability to move product between ports when supplies are restricted and as a result the recent shortage did not impact Z or its customers as it did some of our competitors.

Regardless, I want to apologise to our customers that have been affected by this. Please be assured that our commitment is to provide security of supply to you. In the new year you will be hearing more from us as we firm up how and where we will undertake much needed investment in the New Zealand fuel supply chain.

Until then, best wishes to you and your family for the Christmas season.

COMMERCIAL E-NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 2011

As you know we are Z’ing the nation, and now it’s time to Z our fuel card. Shell Card is now going to be Z Card with an all new design.

What is changing? We are changing the name of the card from ‘Shell Card’ to ‘Z Card’. It will also get a face lift, with the colours and design changing completely.

What is not changing is the functionality of the card. Your PIN, for example, will stay the same, as will the limits on the products you can use, and whether your card has compulsory odometer entry or not.

Why is it changing? After listening to 17,000 customers we realised we couldn’t be a Kiwi company and still carry the name of a foreign based multinational. So we have changed to Z to reflect our national identity and our commitment to New Zealand. The service stations and truckstops have already started to be rebranded and now it’s the turn of our fuel card.

When will it be changing? We will start to issue new Z Cards from 1 February 2012. We are aiming to have all cards rebranded in three months. Your cards will be issued during this time. You will receive all new cards that will replace your current Shell Cards. We recommend that you sign the back of these straight away and destroy your Shell Cards. You will not be able to use both, and your Shell Cards will be cancelled at the end of the month following when you receive your Z Card.

If you order a replacement card after 1 February, you will also receive a new Z Card. The rest of the cards on your account will be reissued as per the schedule after that.

Will I have to pay replacement fees for the card reissue? No. No replacement fees will be charged at all, even if you currently pay a replacement card fee.

What will the card look like? After all this talk about the new Z Card, I bet you can’t wait to see it! Well here it is:

There are three card designs: car, truck and plane. The card that you receive will be based on where you mostly use your card. For example, if you mostly use your Shell Card at service stations you will receive a card with the car on it

Why have a Z Card account? Of course you will be getting a brand new shiny card, but do you ever think about what the benefits of having a Z Card are?

Z Card is designed as a fuel management tool. It should make your life easier through giving you instant access to reporting, card deck management, and alert reporting. You can access all of your account details on Shell Card Online (soon to be Z Card online) and you can also collect Fly Buys points. If you aren’t already collecting Fly Buys, and would like to collect them, give us a call and we can add them to your account.

If you have any questions then please give us a call on 0800 474 355. Our Kiwi call centre are happy to talk you through how to access reports, set up smart alerts or to make sure you have all of your cards in order before we re-issue them.

Introducing Z Card!

Letters to the EditorI was very negative about the name change etc. having dealt with Shell Triangle for the last 48 years. However, I must congratulate you. I was wrong and you were right. The new concept is great in all but the cheese rolls,

and sandwiches could do with the magic wand of life put over them too. The stations and the service look great, major improvement, good to see the staff smiling. P. CURIN

We reckon it’s important to hear what our customers think. If you would like to contribute with a letter, then do so by emailing us at [email protected]

The heroes of the Rena oil spill clean-up are everyday people. They don’t want accolades or attention, they just want to get on with their lives. Without them, however, the collision of the Rena into the Astrolabe Reef on the 5th October would have been an environmental disaster that would have affected the Bay of Plenty community for years to come.

The salvors for the salvage company, Svitzer, had to undergo slippery, murky, smelly conditions in order to pump the Marmite-like fuel oil of the Rena. Just to stop any further spills into the ocean.

The 25 to 30 salvors arrived at their jobs in a helicopter harness and were only flown back to sleep. They are engineers, divers, naval architects and ships’ masters from New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Holland and the United States.

Meanwhile the crew of the Awanuia, who are Kiwis employed by the barge’s owner Seafuels, were suddenly faced with circumstances well outside their job description. Normally they supply bunker fuel to ships at the Port of Auckland. They stepped up to the challenge and worked side by side with the salvors, helping to pump fuel oil off the Rena and into the Awanuia. For five weeks they worked around the clock and were away from family and friends.

The job was tough, and dangerous, but ultimately the salvors, with the help of the Awanuia crew, prevented further oil spills.

Back on land thousands of volunteers were helping clean up the oil off the beaches. Led by Pim de Monchy from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the volunteers put in well over 19,000 hours on this massive community effort to help get the beaches ready for summer. In total, over 960 tonnes of oily waste has been collected.

Andrea Davis, a local Tauranga resident, was so distraught after hearing about the spill that she felt like she had to help. “It made me cry actually, but then I thought that was really silly and decided that while everyone was deciding what to do, I would get some soup and see if I could help.”

Andrea spent one to two hours a day cooking pumpkin soup, which she then took down to the volunteers.

Andrea also approached local businesses for sponsorship. She felt like she couldn’t do much, but she knew there would be people cleaning the beaches and it was still cold, so she decided to do whatever she could to help.

It really mattered to Andrea that someone did something. Andrea believes that “you pay it forward. And hopefully, you know, out of all of this, the good will improve the community.”

Considering the long-term damage oil spills have had on other parts of the world, it is impressive that the beaches in Tauranga are already clean and ready to be enjoyed this summer. This is testament to the hard work and sense of ownership of our beautiful beaches that was demonstrated by all those involved in the clean-up. We know that many of you, our customers, also contributed to the clean-up, whether financially, through man-hours, or through making alternative arrangements to free up the Awanuia, and Z is particularly proud to be “for New Zealand” at times like these.

Still want to help?Community focus has now shifted to the Adopt-a-Beach programme where small groups of people are taking responsibility for keeping an eye on their patch of beach. To find out more, please email [email protected] or phone 0800 884 881 extn RENA (7362).

What stopped the Rena incident from being a maritime disaster of epic proportions was the work of everyday heroes. The work of the salvors, the crew of the Awanuia (the Z-chartered marine bunker barge called in to help remove the oil from the Rena), and the thousands of volunteers who worked tirelessly to clean the beaches - the heroes of the Tauranga community.

Unsung heroes of Rena oil spill clean up

Meet Simon WardPosition Office Based Account Manager.

Z career Kicked off in 2001 in the customer service centre. I then moved into the direct marketing team. We looked after smaller sized customers and did lots of cold calling campaigns. I then moved into my current role, which looks after medium sized commercial business for Z. This current role has changed quite a bit since I started in it, but now I look after shell Card customer plus a few bulk fuels customers as well.

Favourite part of job Every day brings something different. When the phone rings, I never know what the conversation is going to be. Except when it’s my wife, then I pretty much know how it’s going to go, with me having to do something…

Vision for future of Z Energy/patch The changes that Z is bringing to the workplace and the way we operate is very exciting. In the old world, under previous global ownership, when something was challenged the answer was normally just “because that’s the way we have always done it”. Now people are encouraged to think differently and try new stuff. Failure is not viewed in the same negative light as it once was. People are encouraged to try new things and learn from them and they are really keen to help us develop more skills.

Hobbies/interests outside work Two small kids keep me pretty busy, home renovations are on the list for summer, and I also enjoy classic cars and radio controlled model car racing. My wife and I own a small hair salon here in Wellington so that keeps us busy as well, and if that wasn’t enough next year I’m starting formal study at Massey (part time).
