A Letter from the Associate Dean

Dear Friend of mcintire:

as we close out a tumultuous yet successful year at Uva and mcintire, our 2012 Destinations report reflects the steadfastness of our graduating class. We are reminded that our strong commitment remains focused on our students, our colleagues, and you the employers. The job market showed small signs of recovery in several industries during this past academic season, but based on 100% response from our students, we confidently share a perceptible jump in job choices.

as recruiters tweak their hiring strategies, mcintire continues to be a target school for many companies. our undergraduate and graduate students were part of a 3% increase in on-Grounds interviews, comprising over 48% of these interviews. our employer outreach and corporate involvement in the classroom created a sustainable alliance with the students that will, no doubt, develop into employment retention.

You have been instrumental in our students’ understanding of career options by assisting with our employer-in-residence program, participating in Commerce Career Day activities, hosting students during our city treks, and providing insight and clarity in the ever-changing employment environment. The teaching faculty, administrators, and mcintire staff all appreciate your willingness to share your wisdom and direction. our students are extremely fortunate to have your engagement at mcintire.

our growing global footprint will expand students’ academic and social understanding of the world. our graduate programs are burgeoning and producing fantastic thinkers. increased internship opportunities provide undergraduates a chance to experience the workplace and share in their enthusiastic outlook on business. We look forward to assisting you in building on your brand here at mcintire and benefiting from our outstanding student population.

on behalf of Commerce Career Services and the entire mcintire School, thank you for your continued support. Please know we are here to help with your recruiting needs, and we hope to see you on Grounds very soon.

Sincerely,

Tom Fitchassociate Dean for Commerce Career Services & employer relations

“The coming year promises to not only expand the knowledge base of our students, but also to broaden their opportunities. Business Analytics is a new track for our students, and employers will benefit from their increased understanding of what drives commerce.”

Students concentrate in one or two specialized areas according to their interest and career plans. Students may take elective courses outside their areas of concentration to enrich their career capabilities and satisfy their intellectual interests. most students complete a second concentration; many complete a second major or minor outside the mcintire School. Third-year students do not declare a concentration until their spring semester.

“My experience at the McIntire School of Commerce has been the best and most important of my life. I have obtained essential business skills that will stay with me throughout my career. However, the McIntire experience would not be complete without the career services department. They use strong employer ties and an unparalleled knowledge in career development to help students obtain positions in the industries of their choice. The career services team is the key to turning students’ educations into careers.”

—Jessica Bates, ‘13

Undergraduate Student Profile Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of virginia, believed a liberal arts education was key to a successful professional career. in keeping with that belief, students spend the first two years of undergraduate work combining liberal arts and business prerequisite courses. Students, including those from other schools, typically apply for admission to mcintire during their second year.

mcintire students tackle the School’s integrated Core experience (iCe), a continuously evolving third-year curriculum that updates and refines the presentation of core business knowledge and skills. The primary goal of the iCe program is to prepare mcintire students for the dynamic, changing realities of today’s business world.

McIntire Remains #2 among Nation’s Top Business Programs in Bloomberg Businessweek Rankings The mcintire School of Commerce was once again ranked second among the nation’s best undergraduate business programs, according to the annual Bloomberg Businessweek rankings, and it remains the only program to be consistently ranked either first or second in the seven years that Businessweek has ranked undergraduate programs. The rankings were announced march 20, 2012, in a live Web chat with Businessweek editors.

Notre Dame’s mendoza College of Business was ranked first. Cornell University’s Charles H. Dyson School of applied economics and management was ranked third.

“mcintire earned a+ grades for teaching quality, facilities and services, and job placement and was rated the #1 m.B.a. feeder school,” said mcintire Dean Carl Zeithaml. He added that the School was #2 in the student survey rank and #8 in the recruiter survey rank. The School placed #7 for academic quality, determined by measuring five equally weighted components. From the schools themselves, Businessweek obtained average SaT scores, the ratio of full-time students to faculty, and average class size. The student survey supplied the percentage of business majors with internships and the hours students spend every week on schoolwork.

The School also remains the top-rated program among public institutions, with the University of michigan’s ross School of Business falling from #6 to #7 and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School falling from #8 to #10.

“over the past seven years, the School’s consistent top-tier ranking in a highly competitive environment is a tribute to the entire mcintire community,” Zeithaml said. “our success is a direct result of our terrific students, faculty, and staff, as well as the extraordinary support provided by our alumni, parents, and corporate sponsors. Their investment in the mcintire School enables our world-class faculty to remain in the forefront of innovation in both teaching and research. it enables the School to attract superlative students and to produce high-impact graduates. our 2011 graduates secured excellent jobs, and our Class of 2013 is statistically the strongest ever.”

other virginia schools ranked in the top 50 were the University of richmond (15), The College of William & mary (25), and James madison University (31).

“Commerce Career Services was a crucial element in my internship search. They not only acted as a resource to help me find opportunities but I was able to work with them in considering my options and making the best decision for my career path. They were an invaluable resource and dedicated a great deal of time in order to help me make the best.”

–Suzanna Fishman, ‘13

“Commerce Career Services is absolutely unparalleled! McIntire prides itself in its rich and deep network of support and CCS goes above and beyond. I’m impressed by how CCS always seeks feedback from students to better tailor programs to their needs while also keeping students abreast of the constantly changing marketplace. By being attuned to both the needs of the students and the employers, CCS is an invaluable resource. Students choose to attend McIntire not merely because of its renowned academics and curriculum, but also because they know that CCS can help them find that perfect fit after college. It also doesn’t hurt that the staff are some of the friendliest people around either!”

“The faculty members at McIntire truly ignite an intellectual curiosity within their students. While they impart invaluable knowledge and technical skills in the classroom, their guidance extends far beyond a structured class setting. Through invigorating and inspiring conversations, they tirelessly work to establish lasting relationships with students and take a genuine interest in our future aspirations. Although I spent only a year at UVa, it is evident that I not only built an invaluable support network, but gained lifelong friends as well.”
