The rich history of academic costumes and the regulations governing their design and wear dates back to Eleventh and Twelfth Century Europe, where a revival of interest in learning led to the establishment of universities.
In England, the “university” was a guild of craftsmen or artisans where a degree was conferred on an individual who attained full membership. The use of academic degrees was modeled after the guilds’ systems of apprenticeship and mastery (the term bachelor generally denoted an “apprentice” as opposed to the “master” workman; the title of “doctor” was later established as a degree superior to that of master).
During this particular period, men and women were commonly attired in long, full-flowing, hooded robes. The apparel varied in elegance according to the rank and wealth of the owner and according to the rules of decorum established by the king.
By the Sixteenth Century the hood ceased to be worn at all except by legal, official, clerical, and academic personages. After the Sixteenth Century, hats began to predominate in male costume. The shape of the “mortarboard” cap that is associated with the ceremonial dress worn at academic commencement is thought to be derived from the master workman’s mortarboard.
The English love of tradition and ceremony created the elaborately distinctive academic dress and the rules and regulations regarding them. The cap and gown of the masters and scholars distinguished them from the lay folk.
As you observe the procession of Spring Lake Park faculty members, you’ll note the following: holders of a bachelor’s degree will be attired in black gowns with long, pointed sleeves, and a three-foot hood; those who have earned a master’s degree will wear gowns with an oblong sleeve and a three and one-half foot hood; the doctor’s gown has bell-shaped, velvet-striped sleeves, and a four-foot hood.
The hood is the most important feature of this ceremonial dress. The hoods for all degrees are lined with silk in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree. The binding or trim of all the hoods is of velvet or velveteen (two inches, three inches, or five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s, or doctor’s degrees respectively). The color of the velvet trim indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains (e.g., white is for liberal arts, light blue is for education, brown is for fine arts).
In the early 1900s a group of American educators designed and introduced the official high school cap and gown in an effort to lend a certain dignity to their commencement exercises. The sleeves of the gown were made round and full, and the cap is the traditional Oxford or mortarboard design with a silk tassel draped over the front left quarter. (Honor students may be distinguished by the gold tassel on their caps.) By donning this regalia so steeped in tradition, our graduates share in the pride of academic accomplishment that has marked commencement for more than eight centuries.
