Dear Students, Parents and Alumni,

Welcome to the 2012 European University Commencement Ceremony Brochure. First of all, I would like to thank you parents for your support of the students; students for your hard work; and all of you for your passion and dedication.

The world today is changing at a rapid pace. Neither I nor those of you who are graduating today can predict with total certainty what the world will look like in 12 months, much less in five years. I got my degree in 1973. Most of you parents will remember that as the year of the largest Oil Crisis in history. The future seemed especially uncertain and many mornings, we couldn’t use our cars because the gas to run them was simply too expensive. But here we are today – most of us car owners – celebrating this joyous occasion, demonstrating that the challenges that in their moment seemed so daunting eventually fade into distant memories.

It goes without saying that although all events – good and bad– inevi-tably pass, success always comes to those people who are prepared and ready for anything. For this I would like to advise you to always follow the three Ds: 1. Make the Difference; it is as much about being different as it is about making a difference in the world. 2. Be Diverse; do not put blinders on and shut out everything else. It is most important to know a little about everything – one never knows when those accordion lessons may come in handy. 3. Distinguish yourself; as the world grows it also shrinks, clients want special attention from a knowledgeable expert so specialize and find your niche.

Keep this advice in mind and you will possess the basic tools to prosper in this world.

The Saint Bernard Pass Charitable Foundation was formed in 2001 and its main objective is to bring clean water and water treatment

facilities to those in need worldwide. From its location in Canada’s Northwest Territories, the foundation is exploring the concept of shipping “ice melt” via tankers to parts of the world that are in desperate need of water. It is a complex operation but they are making dramatic headway. The safety and accessibility of drinking water is a major concern throughout the world. Health risks arise from consump-tion of water contaminated with infectious agents, toxic chemicals and radiological hazards. Over the years, Saint Bernard Pass Charitable Foundation has been active in the exploration and drilling of

water wells in third world countries as well as the building of facilities to treat water. This is the foundation’s main mission. In addition, the Foundation began an initiative to give six individual awards at each of the European University annual Commencement Ceremonies in Spain, Switzerland and Germany. These awards recognize substantial efforts in corporate responsibility, sustainability, leadership, social responsibility, family business man-agement and a special award to the top MBA graduate who exemplifies innovative entrepreneurship. Christina Saint-Marché, founder of the Foundation and mother of MBA graduate Richard Chance Saint-Marché speaks of the respect and dedication the Saint-Marché family has for European University:

Our family made this commitment because we wanted to continue to be connected to European University long after our son gradu-ated. I ask you today, as parents of these fine graduates, to stay connected to the university as well. The more you lend your voice to this university and its educators, the stronger EU will become. The value of the diplomas that our children are to receive today is derived from the core strength of this institution. A wise man once said to me; “In order to make a difference…..you have to be the differ-ence.” I ask you today to think about how you can “be the difference” for the students who follow our children and for the university as a whole. Thomas Caric delivered the 2012 commencement address. In his speech, Mr. Caric first addressed the proud parents by stat-ing that a university degree does pay off: “Rest assured. A good university education is the golden card for an excellent job.” He then continued and focused his speech on what he considers to be the key for future success: globalization. European University has always emphasized a pragmatic approach; one that will help the students gain real-life and practical experience dur-ing their studies. Mr. Caric acknowl-edged that this approach has helped EU students to gain an advantage over their competitors in the global labor market, by making them quick decision makers: “It’s not all in the books. Making a quick decision with 80% of the facts is better than making a late decision with 100% of the facts.” Mr. Caric was also awarded the King Fellow Award. EU President, Dr. Dirk Craen took the stage and addressed the graduates, highlighting that the world is becoming more challenging and success will only come to those people who are prepared and ready for change.

Thomas Caric started as a copywriter in the late 80s in the German province of Frankonia. He still smiles when he talks about when he rhymed “Geschichten aus dem Bärenwald (Stories from the Bear Forest)” for Germany’s biggest toy importer, “Simba.” Mr. Caric was then head hunted for the product management of action figures belonging to the Transformers, WWF and Jurassic Park franchises. For his inner child, there couldn’t be a better job! After developing innovative merchan-dising for toys and games, another U.S. company got word of Mr. Caric’s talent; Microsoft. As head of Consumer Products Marketing, Mr. Caric’s team rolled out hits like Encarta, Works and the legendary Force Feedback Joystick.

So he took on the next big thing: Xbox. To work on such a game changer against rivals like Sony’s Playstation and Nintendo’s GameCube was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for any marketer. Currently, Microsoft’s German market is as important and profitable as ever, and for Mr. Caric, fun at work comes from participat-ing in emerging markets like the Middle East, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe. Since 2006, Mr. Caric has steered Microsoft’s category marketing efforts for Windows and Office in EMEA, MEA and CEE. With Windows 8 and Office 15 on the horizon, he has no doubt that his most excit-ing days at Microsoft are still to come.

Felix FinkbeinerFounder, Plant-for-the-PlanetSocial Responsibility Award

Felix Finkbeiner, 14, developed the idea that children could plant one million trees in each country while he was only in the 4th grade. As global citizens, he believed they should take on global challenges. At Plant-for-the-Planet, children empower other children to spread the word about sustainability. They want to reach one million climate justice ambassadors by 2020.

They have developed a three-point-plan to save their future: 1. Leave fossil fuels in the ground 2. Make poverty a museum exhibition 3. Plant one billion trees In December 2011, the United Nations handed the Billion Tree Campaign to Plant-for-the-Planet. Now the children have the official world tree counter with 12.6 billion trees planted already. They have also invited the industrial sector to support their activities by asking them to pay a Future Fee of 0.1 % per million of their annual turnover.

Amit Yudan works closely with strategic partners, energy companies, governments and investors in a joint effort to establish and operate Better Place in Europe. Amit has over 22 years of management experience in strategic planning, business development, network operations and tech-nology rollouts in fields such as telecom-munications networks, deployment of smart grid and automatic metering platforms, as well as semiconductors. He has personally led numerous projects from conceptual design to mass market deployment in many European countries. Amit received a B.Sc. in Industrial Management Engineering from the

Manfred Welzel studied Theology and Geography. Following his internship at St. Franziskus Secondary School in Olpe, in 1990, he took over management for “Internationaler Familienkongress – Familie ist Zukunft Bonn e.V.” (International Family Convention – Family is Future). He has worked as a corporate consultant for Malteser Hilfsdienst in Cologne. He became CEO of McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Stiftung in 2007. Under his leadership, the foundation has founded 12 Ronald McDonald Houses, along with a system to organize the work of voluntary staff and professionalizing of fundraising activities. Father of three children, Welzel is a member of the Global Advisory Council of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Oak Brook, U.S.A..

Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and an MBA from the European University. In September 2011, at a consortium of the EU-backed TEN-T project, “Greening European Transportation Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles”, Amit Yudan publicly pre-sented some of Better Place’s future visions for an electric car network as part of an ambitious plan to introduce electric vehicles throughout Western Europe. The event marked the official launch of a project aimed at planning a Pan-European network of battery switch stations throughout Austria, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Dr. Axel Munz studied economics at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. After graduating, he started at Angermaier, his family business in the leather apparel industry. Since taking over, Dr. Munz has turned Angermaier into a market leader in the traditional attire and accessories sector. He liberated the tradi-tional costume from its dusty image, thus ensuring that traditional fashion fits with modern consciousness. With creations such as the world’s most expensive Dirndl decorated with 150,000 Swarovski stones, the ‘Million Dollar Dirndl’ and the ‘Football World Cup Dirndl’, which is at display at the German History Museum, consumers have been able to witness a tra-ditional festive garb transform into sparkling masterpieces. In addition to his professional achieve-ments, Dr. Munz is married and has two daughters, the eldest of which has been involved in Angermaier for over two years.

Dr. Wissmeier started his professional career in a bank as an apprentice. Afterwards, he began his studies at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. He then decided to gain international experience by going to Paris for a year to work and study French. Back in Munich, he specialized in Strategic Management, Marketing and Market Psychology and graduated Diplom-Kaufmann. His career then led to a position as a Consultant in an international consulting company (a spin-off of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants) and Marketing Director in a multinational company (Sixt Rent a Car). He also went back to university and finished his doctorate in International Marketing Strategies. He is currently a professor of Strategic and International Marketing at European University. In 2000, he founded Dr. Wissmeier Strategy and Marketing Consulting. The company offers cross-industry consulting for medium and large sized companies.

Best Bachelor’s ThesisGermany

In his Bachelor’s Thesis, Maximilian Wimmer analyzed the different types of corporate legal entities in Germany and how to apply this knowledge when restructuring an existing business. The aim of the project was to demonstrate that a more effective corporate structure in terms of liability, funding and taxation would maximize efficiency and would also maximize profit.

Lecturer Egon Zank “The Tank” was awarded the Prince Fellow Award for best lecturer, an annual honor presented by the students to the lecturer of their choosing. As soon as the emotional ceremony was over and the joyful tears were wiped away, a cocktail reception was held at the Ballroom Cocktail Lounge. It was a great opportunity for the graduates, families and other guests to socialize, take pictures and celebrate this joyful event. The cocktail reception was followed by a wonderful three-course dinner at the hotel’s fabulous Dachgarten (Roof garden). The restaurant offers not only delicious gourmet food but also a magnificent view across the whole city of Munich.

Commencement Ceremony held in June at the InterContinental Hotel in Geneva. The room was full of energy, excitement and never-ending camera flashes as the crowd celebrated the student graduation, honorary doctor-ate and excellence in business awards. Each student marched in and greeted the audience with a wide grin. Dr. R. Seetharaman, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Doha Bank Group, Chairman of Doha Brokerage and Financial Services Limited and CEO of Doha Bank Assurance Company, offered inspiring words to the class of 2012 during his commencement address. Dr. R. Seetharaman, a prominent personality in the banking industry throughout the Middle East, has achieved international success for his contribu-tions to Banking, Trade, Investment,

The anticipation continued to build as eager graduates watched those receiving Honorary Doctorates and Excellence in Business awards grace the stage. In addition to Dr. R. Seetharaman; His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Falah Abdulla Al-Dosari, from the State of Qatar; and the Hinduja Family, from the Hinduja Group, also received Honorary Doctorates. The latter also accepted the Family Business Award. Dr. Koen P. Wilms, Managing Director for 3M France and EU alumnus was given the Leadership Award and used his time at the podium to share his story of overcoming failures, encouraging students to work hard and take advantage of opportunities. Other award recipients included: Nicola Spafford Furey from the Earth Focus Foundation, who received the Sustainability Award; Bert Kranendonk and Joop Post both received the Social Responsibility Award; and Edgar Bovier, Executive Chef of the Lausanne Palace & Spa who took home the King Fellow Award. Following the special awards, each student crossed the stage to shake hands with distinguished guests and Board of Trustees, take a photo with Dr. Craen and, of course, turn their tassel.Osmond Plummer, finance professor for the Swiss campuses, won the Best Professor award, voted on by stu-dents. And this year, a special award was also given to Johnny Kim, who went above and beyond by organiz-ing an entire study trip to China. The student address was deliv-ered by MBA graduate, Kierre Childers, who relayed the wise words of her mentor: “It’s only as good as you make it,” and as quickly as it began, it seemed the ceremony was coming to an end. And just as the excitement seemed to fade, the speakers blared with “I Gotta Feeling,” by the Black Eyed Peas. Students streamed out of the room, diplomas in hand, as the audience cheered.

Environmental causes and Social Responsibility. This experience and wisdom were at the heart of his address, where he encouraged students to think globally as the world continues to need more and more international players.In addition to the commencement address, Dr. R. Seetharaman was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for outstanding achievements across a variety of business sectors as well as the Corporate Social Responsibility award for his commitment to incorporating sustainable methods into his business endeavors. Outside of his recognition through European University, his recent accolades include Best CEO in the Middle East at EMEA Award Ceremony (2008 and 2012), Outstanding Contribution to the Industry, awarded by Banker Middle East Industry Awards (2010) and the International Indian of the Year Award (2010) among others. Dr. R. Seetharaman is recognized for transforming Doha Bank– recently being awarded The Best Bank in Qatar (2011) by EMEA Bank – into one of the best performing banks in the Middle East Region.

Dr. Prakash Hinduja and his wife graced the EU 2012 Switzerland Commencement Ceremony on behalf of the Hinduja Brothers: Srichand, Ashok, Prakash and Gopichand. The Hindujas, a prominent Indian family originally established in merchant banking and trade, now own one of the largest diversi-fied groups present in every continent. Today, the four brothers have extended the business into a variety of other sectors keeping significant emphasis on social and charitable contributions. The family has left a notable impact through philanthropy in their home country and beyond. Specifically on the educational front, The Hinduja Group has made vast contributions toward university scholarships for those seeking higher education. European University awarded each of the four brothers with Honorary Doctorates as well as the Family Business Award for their commitment to maintaining, innovating and evolving the family enterprise. Today the Hinduja Group encourages its 40,000 employees to practice the Vedic principles of work: ‘Service with devotion’ and ‘willingness to see fulfillment of one’s self-interest in the active promotion of the interest of the collective’. Edgard Bovier, Executive Chef of the Lausanne Palace & Spa and a Valais native, has cooking in his blood. Both his father and grandfather were restaurant owners, and, from a young age, Mr. Bovier knew his passion would follow the same path. After serving as an apprentice in Sion and Saint-Moritz, Mr. Bovier began to work as a chef around the Mediterranean and today, many of his dishes draw upon this influence. In 2004, Mr. Bovier took over restaurant duties for the Lausanne Palace & Spa and since July 2008, has also managed cuisine for the Château d’Ouchy. Today, Mr. Bovier has over 40 years’ experience working in hotel kitchens and was a crucial component to the Lausanne Palace & Spa’s recent distinction as “Hotel of the Year” by Gault Millau. The ranking, which is one of the most influential French restaurant guides, also notes that when all the restau-rants Mr. Bovier oversees are put together, he has accumulated more Gualt Millau points than any other chef.

Nicola Spafford Furey, is a leading voice for the Earth Focus Foundation, an orga-nization committed to empowering youth to be active on the sustainable develop-ment front through debates, conferences and projects. As the Vice President of the Foundation, Ms. Furey has lived in Geneva for the past 20 years. Inspired by the late Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan who developed the Earth Focus Foundation, she was determined to continue his work and today is a passionate leader for the Green Map Project which stimulates, motivates and challenges young people to reflect on global issues. Ms. Furey is a humanist, altruist and environmentalist who envisions Geneva as a future center for environmental exchanges and human rights that in turn create a bet-ter future for all. Her passion was apparent as she accepted the Sustainability Award during the com-mencement ceremony, stating that this chance to raise awareness and to be recog-nized was an honor. On June 23, 2012, European University celebrated its Barcelona commencement at the Hotel Pullman

Barcelona Skipper with over 500 attendees present to watch graduates receive EU diplomas at the various Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Dr. Cristina Tomas presided as Mistress of Ceremonies as over 120 students received their degrees. The list of award recipients this year was truly impressive. The Doctor Honoris Causa degree was presented to Dr. Jochum Haakma for his vast contributions to European-Asian trade relations. King Fellow Awards for career excellence were conferred to Agipa Monobayeva for her efforts in expanding the global opportuni-ties for Kazakh students; Vincent Wathelet for his achievements in the Sports Media and Event Planning fields; and Olympic cyclist Peter Van den Abeele for his athletic prowess and contributions to Sports Management. This year’s Entrepreneurship Award went to David Lizzola for suc-cessfully building a flourishing fruit and vegetable supply business from the ground up and making it into one of the largest and most successful in his native Switzerland. Michel Miserez, former EU graduate and this year’s keynote speaker, received the Leadership Award for a 20 year-long career in the Marriott Hotel Group, starting with a position as a night auditor and leading to his current position as Area Vice President of Marriott Hotels in Western Europe. In his address, Mr. Miserez encouraged students to embrace hard work and take job assignments that no one else wants as those jobs will eventually lead to career-defining opportunities. Undergraduate Valedictorian Phillip Bückendorf also spoke, expressing his hope that the hard work the graduating class has thus far put into their studies is only a slight indication of what they will contribute to the world.

The position was entry level and he knew that in order to excel he would need to learn the hotel industry from the ground up. He recalls, “They told me, ‘you don’t have a hotel degree and don’t have much experience so why don’t you get dirty and start in night audit?’” After nine months with Marriott, Mr. Miserez declined a career opportunity with Westin Hotels, convinced that the Marriott culture would serve him better in the long run. His decision paid off and it wasn’t long before he began moving from place to place with the company. Born in Malacca in 1961, Datuk Goh Tian Chuan learned the value of hard work early while assist-ing his fisherman father on the open sea. The third of eight children, it was sheer determination

that helped him complete his primary education even after the premature death of his father when he was only 13. To support his family, Datuk Goh went to work in the food market while pursuing his studies at the Chinese Independent School. Due to a stigma against the Chinese Independent School, Mr. Goh was not considered eligible for any public universi-ties. After a series of odd jobs, he joined the local police force where his fluency in Malay, Mandarin and English earned him a place in the Anti-Drug Enforcement Division and praise from his superiors. Their encouragement prompted Mr. Goh to attend the Police College.

In 1985, Datuk Goh married Datin Ho Soo Kien, they now have three children: two sons and a daughter. In 1993, Datuk Goh left the police force and ventured into private enterprise, focusing specifically on restructuring ailing companies and making them profitable. Over the past few years he has successfully merged and/or acquired several manufacturing firms in Malaysia and in countries such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

On June 22, 2012 the European University Campus at Kazakh Russian International University in Aktobe, Kazakhstan cel-

ebrated its commencement by awarding 12 students degrees at the Bachelor Level. This year marked the fifth anniversary of the European University campus in Aktobe. Since its foundation, over 80 students have been awarded Bachelor of Business Administration diplomas.

This year’s Professor of the Year Awards were given to Professor Iskander Nazarbayev and Professor Baydildinova Makhfuza. Awards for social responsibility were presented to Albina Yussifova, Nargiz Seitkaliyeva, Goita Dazayev and Islam Kursayev. The Best Thesis Award was given to Myrzalina Gulnur.

The ceremony was attended by students, parents and friends and broadcast on an independent TV channel, Aktobe RIKA – TV. The event was accompanied by classical and contemporary music as well as beauti-ful Oriental and European dances. Dr. Altyn Myrzashova, Director of Department of International Cooperation and Dr. Marziya Zhaksygarina extend their congratulations to all the students who graduated.

The joint Rostov State University of Economics (RSUE) and European University (EU) Commencement Ceremony took place in Rostov-on-

Don, Russia on June 25, 2012 at RSUE. EU President, Dr. Dirk Craen along with EU delegates travelled to Rostov-on-Don to attend the commencement of students slated to receive dual BBA degrees after completing all requirements for the Dual Bachelor program. Ten students graduated from this Dual Degree program which consists of studying for three years at Rostov State University of Economics and 1 year at any European University Campus The RSUE Head of the International Department Oleg Bodyagin and Academic Coordinator Narine Papiyants presided over the ceremony attended by Rector, Nikolay

Dr. Dirk Craen was made Honorary Professor of RSUE while Rostov Deputy Governor Igor Guskov received a Doctor Honoris Causa degree from European University along with Mr Kuznetsov and Mr Albelkov for their dedication to promote global opportunities and business programs to their students. Avday Iliych Gozulov medals were presented to Luc Craen, Carl Craen, Sascha Liebhardt and Dr. Dirk Craen for their ongo-ing efforts in maintaining relations between RSUE and EU and building a lasting partnership between the two universities.Graduating student, Daria Krasavina’s speech included highlights of her stay at European University.

Led into their Nichols College graduation ceremony by a bagpiper in full tartan regalia and supported by the cheers of family and friends,

430 Nichols students received their degrees on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Among the members of the graduating class were four European University students who received their BSBA degrees. Taking advantage of the dual degree pro-gram which also awards students a BBA from European University were Arsen Gasparyan, Maria Belhassan, Camilla DeOliveira and Kirill Chuvychilov. While attending Nichols, the four students were immersed in on-cam-pus living and the local culture and learned about business from an American perspective. The graduates heard from College President Susan West Engelkemeyer, who told the students, “Even though I have only known you for a short time, I relish the opportunity to celebrate with you. The best is yet to come.” Shortly after the ceremony, Arsen Gasparyan was one of four seniors who led the men’s tennis team to the Commonwealth Coast Conference title.
