Commandments of Teaching the Net GenerationThou shall be an engaging professor first.
Honor thy voicemail and thy inbox.
Thou shalt not disappear entirely, nor ignore the Internet.
Thou shalt destroy “Power Pointless”
Thou shalt build active constructors.
Thou hath no lesson without real world relevancy.
Thou shall be an active participant, thyself.
Thou shall ask students first.
The Good News
Students still crave faculty with expertise and enthusiasm
We still want to feel as though our professor is the “expert” and we still want to be invigorated and intrigued by their knowledge
Net Gen’ers don’t want everything on the Web – and they don’t expect it
We still need boundaries for communication and IT etiquette
We still want to meet with you and get to know you outside the classroom
We want to be challenged
