The goal is to find the right balance. Although ICTs [information and business
technologies] (…) have shown their potential for being seriously disruptive,
these same technologies - especially email and the Internet - are also
enormously useful and productive, when used appropriately. (May, 2006, p 83)
The boundaries between work and home have become blurred as shown in the
example of the Dossier Solutions of Norway. The benefits for the Company of
extended work e orts coming from access to employees through technology at all
times of the day and night were found to be significant. Yet the same technology is a
drag on productivity at work: personal use of ICTs combined with unstructured
always-on interaction with email reduces work focus and takes time away from the
business of business. It is these unintentional consequences of technology that have
to be understood and addressed so that both employer and employee benefit.
