The pH value of the water

The pH value is very decisive for the assessment of water. The scale of possible pH value ranges from pH 0 (extremely acidic) to pH 14 (extremely basic). In the middle of the pH scale is the neutral point at a pH value of 7. In an ideal case the pH value of clean water should range around pH 7. Every change in pH by one unit means 10 times more or less acid’s concentration.

The pH is influenced by temperature, rocks, photosynthesis and human activities.

The pH is important as plants and animals have their own pH value range and they have low tolerance to changes

The pH value scale

0-6,5 : acidic region

6,5-7,5: neutral region

8-14: basic region

6-8: Limits preference for living in freshwater fish.

6,5-8,5: Drinking Water Regulations for EC

6,5-8,4:Desired limits for irrigation water.

Come mainly from excessive pollution of agricultural crops, raw sewage and atmospheric precipitation.

In excessive quantities cause eutrofication of water.

If it enters the body of children in large quantities or long periods, they cause diseases.

Allowable limits in drinking water:25-50mg/lt

They are derived from the decomposition of dead organisms, sewage, fertilizers, industrial waste,and food preservatives.

In excessive consentrations they are toxic to humans and cause suffocation of organisms.

Allowable limits in drinking water:less than 0,1mg/lt

They are derived from phosphate rocks, rain, industrial waste,detergents and when the biological cleaning does not work properly.

They cause eutrofication. Allowable limits in drinking water: less than

40mg/lt

They are derived from the decomposition of dead organisms, fertilizers, litter and residential sewage pipes.

They cause water pollution. Allowable limits in drinking water: less than 5mg/lt
