COMEDY CONVENTIONS

By Atlanta Johnson

CHARACTERS

Accident prone, smart people, socially awkward,

'regular' people.

THEMES

Anarchic comedy

Parody

Romantic comedy -

Slapstick - comedy using physical clowning. Movement and gestures

create laughter.

Wit/wordplay - comedy through subtle manipulation of the language in

a clever way, for example: puns.

Dark humour - deals with disturbing subjects such as war and drugs

etc.

SETTING

The setting depends on the type of comedy

that is being used, these include:

GENERIC PLACES. Such as towns, cities,

bright places, well populated areas.

TEEN COMEDY. High school, small towns.

SOCIAL COMEDY. Homes, bars.

Many old comedies were set in New York due

to the ‘glamorous’ reputation it has. This

worked well with the intentions of escapism.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

HIGH SHOTS – used to capture the whole environment

MEDIUM SHOTS - capturing facial expressions,

specifically important when creating physical comedy.

EDITIED SOUNDS – used to enhance the humour of the

scene and slapstick effects.

Music is used to create a light-hearted atmosphere,

normally a form of jazz.
