SPRING 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Come Visit Us at Our New Home Vista Center in Palo Alto has bid farewell to our interim Hillview location and moved into the ground floor of a below-market-rent project at 2500 El Camino Real. The newly built complex, Mayfield Place, was developed by Related California on Stanford University property and is now officially Vista Center’s home for the long term.

Transportation to our new home is conveniently accessible via VTA, CalTrain and paratransit services. Our proximity to California Avenue provides clients with additional conveniences and the building’s beautifully landscaped patio offers

opportunities for clients to socialize before and after appointments. Vista Center’s new space is designed to accommodate multiple groups for efficient on-site collaboration between our depart- ments and easy accessibility for our clients. The larger space pro- vides us flexibility in scheduling as we start to expand our dynamic technology program and develop new and timely social and recre- ational services.

Vista Center would like to thank all those who have given their time, expertise and generous financial support to secure this

remarkable new home. Their ded- ication to our clients and belief in the services we provide inspires us.

We hope to see you soon at one of our Open Houses. We always welcome opportunities for personal tours.

My name is Max Rosenblum and I am a freshman at Palo Alto High School. I was born very nearsighted and nearly blind in one eye, so I know how hard it can be to do everyday things with a visual disability. I got involved with Vista Center through my mom, who encouraged me to volunteer with Vista Center to help people solve problems that were very familiar to me.

Volunteering with a visual impairment can be very challenging and it took me awhile to figure out where

I could help. Alice Turner, Vista Center’s Community Relations Manager, helped me find jobs where I could be effective as a volunteer and utilize my talents. Today I help with any volunteer projects that involve computers and taking pictures. I have found volun- teering with Vista Center to be very satisfying and I hope others with a visual disability think about volunteering at an organization they want to help. It is a lot of fun!

Santa Cruz: New Location and New Plans

Center offers a myriad of services here including Low Vision Services, Safe & Healthy Living programs and Technology programs. Vista Center welcomed our first Santa Cruz Branch Manager, Christy Tall, in February and we plan to expand programs with in- creased outreach to our community. In addition, our dynamic technology department has launched several new classes including assistive technology training, technology labs and a technology users group. The technology team is entirely comprised of volunteer staff for whom we are incredibly grateful. Vista Cen- ter is proud of the exciting things happening as we continue to be a one-stop solution for people who are blind or visually impaired in Santa Cruz County.

Vista Center is generating lots of excitement in Santa Cruz with our new office location, new outreach plans and big things happening with our technology department and low vision clinic. We have been pro- viding services in Santa Cruz County for more than 45 years, and we continue to honor our Santa Cruz founder by naming our new office the Ray Westman Branch. The new office, centrally located in mid- county near Dominican Hospital, opened in Novem- ber 2016. Our facility features a state of the art low vision clinic, a technology center, and is well stocked with a variety of products that provide practical solutions for adapting to life with vision loss. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & PRESIDENT

Dear Vista Center Friends, Our agency accomplishments in 2016 have better positioned us to meet the escalating need for vision loss rehabilitation services in the four counties we serve—San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito. In 2014, the number of people in those counties age 65+ was just under 400,000—and that num- ber is expected to skyrocket over the

next decade, with the aging of Baby Boomers. This is significant because the aging process is a major cause of vision loss due to the increasing incidence of age-related macular degeneration and other conditions. Expanding Capacity & Improving Programs We have made facility and infra- structure improvements to expand our capacity for providing the import- ant rehabilitation services for which we are known. Vista Center will be able to serve an increasing number of clients with continually changing and improving technologies.

The Ray Westman Branch in Santa Cruz has relocated to a com- pact, ground floor building centrally located near Dominican Hospital (story page 2). Vista Center in Palo Alto is back on El Camino Real with very convenient public transporta- tion and more space for programs and services (cover story).

We are completing the imple- mentation of a new client database that will facilitate individual client services and streamline operations. We are collecting evidence-based outcomes for Living Skills, Orien- tation & Mobility and Assistive

Technology instruction to measure improvements in our clients’ lives and validate the effectiveness and value of the work we do. Our robust Assistive Technology program continues to expand in Palo Alto and is being replicated in Santa Cruz through a generous grant.

Financial Sustainability Our focus is now on ensuring that our services are financially sus- tainable for the long term. Through a continuation of our Capital Campaign, which funded the tenant improvements for our beautiful new home on El Camino Real, as well as funding our guaranteed fifteen years at below-market-rent, we are now focusing on increasing our Endowment Fund as a stable source of continuous long-term funding.

Thank You! We send a heartfelt “thank you” to all of our friends and supporters who continue to sustain our life-changing work and who are recognized in the pages that follow.

Warm regards,

Executive Director President, Board of Directors

REVIEW OF 2016 EVENTS

Vintage Affaire JUNE 18, 2016

ATHERTON

On a gorgeous summer afternoon last June, 200 guests strolled the beautiful gardens of a lovely Ather- ton estate during the 34th annual Vintage Affaire—enjoying a vari- ety of wines from 20 outstanding vintners and gourmet appetizers by five local celebrity chefs. Bid- ding for auction packages was vigorous and lively. Items included wines from the exceptional cellar of the late Jane and Bill Walsh,

as well as many more unique and rare wines donated by other private cellars. The “Invest in Vision” fund-

a-need was a highlight of the evening. An extraordinarily generous gift from Connie and Bob Lurie kicked off this bene- fit for Vista Center’s Technology Program.

For ticket information call 650-858-0202 or visit vintageaffaire.org.

Menlo Charity Horse Show AUGUST 9–14, 2016

MENLO PARK

The Menlo Charity Horse Show celebrated 46 years last August, serving as the stomping grounds for 500 of the most notable names on the U.S. equestrian show circuit.

The six day event featured all-day action with fierce hunter/ jumper competitions in three arenas. Crowd favorites included the $40,000 Grand Prix sponsored by Bentley San Francisco and Bentley Los Gatos and the $20,000 International Hunter Derby. Attendees enjoyed food and bev- erages provided by favorite Menlo Park establishments, and browsed more than 40 kiosks offering one of a kind items. The “Road to Rio” Friday Night Gala featured a successful auction which raised more than $300,000 for Vista Cen- ter. To date, the event has raised over $6 million benefiting Vista Center’s programs and services.

Hats Off to Vista Center NOVEMBER 12, 2016

SANTA CRUZ

Donning hats and trading compli- ments on their creative headwear, guests at the second annual Hats

Off event in Santa Cruz enjoyed a festive late afternoon-early evening affair complete with tantalizing hors d’oeuvres,

wine and beer. A variety of unique and popular silent auction items were offered, and bidding rapidly escalated as guests vied in friendly competition for their favorite items. A warm sense of community made everyone feel welcome; a hat contest added an extra element of excitement. The event was held on November 12 at Temple Beth El in Aptos. When it was over, more than $45,000 had been thrown in the hat to support Vista Center’s services in Santa Cruz County.
