Spotting disease problems in your turf is just the beginning.Solve them with treatment products from Green Velvet!

GREEN VELVET SOD FARMS’ GUIDE TO SPOTTING AND TREATING TURF DISEASES

Spotting & Treating Turf DiseaseSpotting & Treating Turf DiseaseSpotting & Treating Turf DiseaseSpotting & Treating Turf DiseaseSpotting & Treating Turf Disease

GRAY LEAF SPOT Ryegrass is most the most susceptible turf to GrayLeaf Spot. Initial symptoms of GLS can mimicdrought symptoms. Heavier outbreaks take on theappearance of scorched turf. Small pinprick lesionsadvance into water soaked leaf tips and then totwisted necrotic leaf blades. Late stages may havea gray color caused by large masses of the fungus.

• Avoid medium to high nitrogen levels during mid-summer.• Irrigate turf deeply and infrequently to avoid water stress.• Allow water to remain on leaves only short period of time.• Reduce thatch by vertical cutting.• When possible, plant turfgrass resistant to gray leaf spot.• Avoid herbicides, growth regulators if disease is active.

DOLLAR SPOT Dollar spot is a fungus affecting small, circularareas of turf, about 1 to 5 inches in diameter.Spots may merge to form large, irregular areas.

Symptoms are leaf blades with tan or strawcolored bands with dark red-brown margins anda hourglass shape.

Treatment Solutions• Daconil• Headway• Instrata• Iprodine

• Use an adequate level of nitrogen• Mow grass at regular intervals.• Reduce thatch.• Increase the air circulation.• Irrigate turf deeply, infrequently to avoid drought stress.• Remove dew from the turf early in the day.• Convert to a turfgrass cultivar that resists dollar spot.

BROWN PATCH Symptoms can vary depending on the grass.Disease typically causes rings or patches ofblighted turfgrass that measure 5 inches to morethan 10 feet in diameter. It also causes leaf spotsand "smoke rings"—thin, brown borders aroundthe diseased patches that appear most frequentlyin the early morning.

• Use low to moderate amounts of nitrogen, moderate phosphorous and moderate to high amount of potash.• Avoid nitrogen applications when the disease is active.• Increase the height of cut.• Minimize amount of shade.• Improve turf’s drainage.

SUMMER PATCH Roots, crowns, and stolons are affected by adark brown rot. Young roots may appear healthy, although dark brown hyphae may be present onthese tissues. Vascular discoloration and corticalrot occur in later stages of the disease. Patchesmay occasionally retain centers of green, apparently unaffected grass.

• Reduce soil compaction through aerification and by using lightweight equipment.• Convert from fine-leaf fescue to tall fescue, bentgrass or perennial rye.• Increase the height of cut. • Use acidifying fertilizer.• Syringe when over 85°F. • Improve turf’s drainage.

• Increase the air circulation.• Irrigate early in the day.• Reduce thatch.

ANTHRACNOSE Can infect turfgrass during warm weather, usuallyover 78°F. Causes irregularly shaped patches thatare yellow to brown. Yellow leaf lesions with blackcenters may also occur. Causes a basal stem andleaf sheath rot. Infected shoots are easily detached.Dead foliage also become covered with acervuli— tiny, spined, black fruiting bodies.

• Increase the height of cut. Decrease foot traffic• Minimize stress by using walk-behind mowers.• Maintain adequate nitrogen and balanced fertility level.• Irrigate the turfgrass just enough to prevent wilting.• Don’t core aerate while disease symptoms are present.• Make preventative fungicide applications in chronic areas

PYTHIUM BLIGHT Pythium blight appears suddenly during hot, humid weather. Common in wettest areas of turfand the drainage pattern. Disease causes greasy, brown circular spots initially 3/4 to 2 inches wide, then rapidly enlarges. Spots are water-soaked,dark-colored in early morning. Also forms fluffywhite masses of fungal mycelium (cottony blight).

• Avoid mowing wet turf when the temperature is over 70°F to minimize spreading the disease.• Apply less than 1/2 lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. monthly• Increase air circulation to speed turf’s drying process• Minimize amount of shade.• Water deeply, infrequently

FUSARIUM Fusarium patch causes patches that are yellowor reddish-brown in color and 1 to 6 inches wide.Edges are reddish-brown or pink. "Smoke rings"— thin, brown borders around the diseased patchesmay appear only in early morning. Occurs incool, wet weather. Blighting in streaks can alsooccur from spore tracking on equipment wheels.

• Maintain balance fertility.• Avoid lime. Alkaline soils enhance disease development.• Increase air circulation to speed turf's drying process.• Apply fungicides prior to the first snow cover of the year.• Make extra fungicide applications during spring melt.• Minimize the amount of shade. • Reduce thatch.

RUST Rust diseases cause light-yellow flecks initiallyon the leaf blades and sheaths. Flecks enlarge, elongate, and turn yellow in color. Infected areasraise above the epidermis and then rupture, releasing spores. The leaf blade turns yellowstarting at the tip and progressing to the base.As individual plants die, the turf thins.

• Convert to a turfgrass seed blend that is resistant to rust• Regulate irrigation to minimize the amount of time moisture remains on the leaf surface.• Apply adequate levels of nitrogen.• Remove clippings from turf.• Water deeply and infrequently
