Come to King’s

You’ve looked at the literature, surfed their websites and visited a couple of campuses. Now several schools have accepted you and it’s time to choose—so how do you do it? Outside of majors and reputation, the college decision really comes down to your gut instinct. Where will I be happy?

The key is finding a school where you’ll fit in. One of the first things you’ll notice about King’s is the warm, inviting atmosphere. As soon as you walk onto campus people will say hello, strangers will offer directions and you’ll feel right at home.

Decisions, decisions…You’ll also find a lot of commuters—about 40% of our students commute—and take an active part in the campus community.

Whether you’ve already decided or you’re on the fence, we hope you will join us. If you’re looking for a college that students describe as ‘friendly’ and ‘welcoming’, King’s is for you. If you’re looking for a small, supportive community where the faculty will know your name, King’s is for you. If you’re looking for a strong reputation and a degree that means something, King’s is for you.

Our First Year Experience is a unique program that all first-year students participate in. The seminar covers a variety of topics that apply to campus life and is offered in a discussion-style format to allow students to get to know each other. We’ll get you started thinking about your career plans freshman year, where you’ll take a test to see what areas you show an aptitude for.

If you haven’t decided on a major, don’t worry—you have plenty of time to determine what you want to study. Register as an undeclared major and your academic advisor will work with you to select courses and register online for your first semester.

Many, but not all, students know what major programs they are interested in. King’s offers 37 majors, several pre-professional programs and special concentrations in business, the humanities, education, social sciences, allied health and the sciences (www.kings.edu/academics/majors). Many find that minoring in another subject is an excellent way to differentiate yourself or pursue an area you’re interested in but not as a career.

I’m here: now what?To kick off your arrival at King’s, orientation sessions are conducted for new students and their parents. Student Government hosts special lunch meetings throughout the year and designates a liaison who is in touch with non-resident student concerns. The Commuter Life Association meets throughout the semester and Student Affairs publishes a newsletter so you’ll always know what’s going on.

Where do I hang out?The Campus Center is a great place for students who commute to relax and meet up with friends during their free time. The lower level features Connerton’s café, pool tables, a big screen TV, lounge area and lockers. Upstairs there are mailboxes, another lounge area, a computer lab, the Widmann Art Gallery and the Office of Campus Activities.

Commuter Life

Campus Activities provides a place for students to express their opinions and have their ideas heard. We encourage you to stop by any time but especially during our monthly “Pit Stops” which offer students who commute news on upcoming events and activities. Come on by for a snack and find out what’s happening on campus.

HINT: Check out our Commuter Life area at www.kings.edu/LifeAtKings/commuting.htm where you’ll find all kinds of resources for new students.

What will I eat? You’ve probably heard someone complain about college food but we can honestly tell you that the food at King’s is good. Really! Whether you’re a meat and potatoes person or a vegetarian, you’ll find a wide variety of food choices to pick from and several places to eat.

In addition to the Marketplace dining hall, your meal pass is good at Connerton’s café, the Susquehanna Room or Leo’s on Mane. Grab a to-go cup at the espresso bar or one of those awesome brownies and head into the lounge to watch TV between classes. We offer several meal plan options and King’s Cash, a prepaid debit card that’s a convenient way to purchase meals on campus. And you can always walk across the street to Senunas’ or down to the square if you’re looking to grab a bite off-campus.

What support is available? To make it easy to come and go, parking is readily available for commuters. If you’re looking for a place to study, there are tons of quiet spots available. There are computer labs all over the campus, which is almost entirely wireless, and our library is online so you can access it from home. You can pick up textbooks, King’s clothing and a Starbucks latte right down the street at our Barnes & Noble college bookstore.

If you need help with your studies, our Academic Skills Center offers tutoring, writing assistance and counseling. The College Diversity Office provides support and advocacy for students of diverse backgrounds. Campus Ministry provides students of all faiths a place to go for reflective purposes and the Counseling Center offers a place to turn to for support. Our 24/7 campus security includes emergency text messaging so you’ll feel comfortable any time of day or night.

What to Do: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…King’s students are friendly and outgoing so don’t be surprised if every person you meet tells you the key to success (and fun) in college is to get involved.

Find a club that interests you, join a team or volunteer for a service organization. Take this opportunity to express yourself—act, sing or attend a social justice rally. Check out the bulletin boards around campus and attend one of the many activities going on such as comedy night or a coffeehouse performance. If you’re looking for a little physical action, join in a pickup basketball game or grab a workout in our new wellness center. Feel like being a couch potato? Compete in a Call of Duty tournament or watch Pretty Little Liars on the big screen with other TV junkies.

Campus Life

What to Do: Friday, Saturday…Following a long week of tests and deadlines, the weekend is time to kick back and unwind or let loose. Stick around and take your pick of any number of things to do. Head over to the Campus Center for a dance or a movie. Go to a football game, watch your buddy make his acting debut or risk humiliation at King’s Idol. Head to a concert at the arena, go shopping at the mall or meet your friends at Rodano’s.

Take advantage of what’s in your own backyard and go snowboarding with your new buddies at Snö Mountain. If you feel like getting out of town, take a shopping trip to New York City or head to Philly for a cheese steak on one of King’s bus trips.
