Welcome to our new Serra members!!!

Don and Julie Kime - Christ the Good Shepherd

Call to Discern Religious Life and the Priesthood On Friday, October 6, 2018, the Andrew Dinner was held at St. Mary’s Seminary. There were around 45 young adults who attended the beautiful dinner and talk given by Fr. Richard McNeillie. Fr. Richard, Marissela Lopez Ramirez and Marlon Barao were very happy to have the Serrans help out! A great big THANK YOU to Phil Duggan, Lynn Lewis and Rolando Tolentino for volunteering to help with the dinner!!! On Monday, October 9, 2018, at the Serra Governor/President’s meeting led by Candice Tyrrell, it was presented and agreed upon to distribute equally to each club the names of the Seminarians. This decision allows for all Seminarians to receive Holy Feast Day, Christmas, Easter, birthday, etc. cards from the Serrans instead of each club sending to all 72 Seminarians. The Seminarians assigned to our Serra North Club are:

Of course you may continue sending cards to those whom you know and are very good friends with!!! We want to show our support and love for the Seminarians. Many are here from Africa, Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam and other distant places and are here alone, with no family. They have said many times they love receiving cards from the Serrans. Please mail your cards to: St. Mary’s Seminary Attn.: ___________ 9845 Memorial Drive Houston, Texas 77024 Thank you and may God bless you, Candice Tyrrell, Serra Governor Archdiocese Galveston/ Houston, Beaumont & Port Arthur

Dr. Michael Zizelmann October 24, 2018 Program Speaker

Dr. Richard Zizelmann presented Religious Relics, including many from the Original Crucifix upon which Jesus was crucified. He also brought many Religious Relics from Saints that he identified. He discussed how Relics are classified, certified and venerated.

Our own Serran, Phil Duggan, also shared a couple of Religious Rel-ics from his personal collection. He shared a Relic from Saint Ann, Mother of Virgin Mary, and Grandmother of Jesus Christ. He also shared a Crucifix that he bought in Budapest, Hungary in 1997—the Russian Wall had just come down and people in Eastern Europe were selling off treasures. It is believed the very center item is from an Easter Candle. The remainder of the Crucifix is raised to reveal the Relics. The attendance

was outstanding! The attendees braved the pouring rain and maneuvered through the park-ing lot construction.

Priesthood Sunday - October 28, 2018

Prince of Peace started working on their Priest-hood Sunday appreciation several weeks ago. They had a booth at their voca-tions fair where they set up a large table with pho-tos of their priests, semi-narians, their novice with Legionaries of Christ and their girl novice with the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecelia. They asked parishioners to sign spiritual bouquet notes and write notes to the priests.

Serran on the Move

A “fisher of men” can also catch a couple of fish! On October 29, Father Desy Daniels and CGS parishioners, Lou Meyer, Royce Molitor and T. Wayne Brewster chartered a boat and fished out of Baytown and caught redfish and speckled trout. The charter boat captain, Capt. Charles Butler, is a Baptist minister on Sundays, so you can imagine the discussions. Fr. Desy is the Spiritual Chaplain at Houston Methodist Hospital Medical Center.

Fellow Club of North Houston Serrans:

Once again, October was a very busy and exciting month!!! I am hoping everyone has December 2

nd on their calendar for our annual Serra Advent Dinner Party.

Our Advent Dinner Party is going to be our biggest ever and will be held at a bigger venue -- Prince of Peace, St. Andrew’s Discipleship Center. All Serrans will have an opportunity to sponsor a priest, seminarian, sister or consecrated religious. We are ramping up final planning for a great event – the Dinner Party will start at 5:00 p.m!!! The Andrew’s Dinner was held at St. Mary’s Seminary on Friday, October 5

th with a fantastic turn-

out!!! Please pray for the 45 young men who attended and are now discerning the priesthood! A huge thank you to Phil Duggan, Lynn Lewis and Rolando Tolentino for helping out!!! Candice (our District Governor) led her Governor/President’s meeting on October 9

th at St. Dominic’s

which I attended. She reminded all the Presidents that she needs volunteers to help with the Vocation Expo at St. Mary’s Seminary on Saturday, January 26

th. Candice was asked to be the Chair

and the Vocation Expo will kick-off with Mass at 9:00 a.m., with Father Richard McNellie as celebrant and Fr. Trung as con-celebrant. I hope you have marked your calendar to attend this wonderful Vocation Expo. As you can see from the picture in the newsletter Candice and I were blessed to be with the Serrans of our East Houston Serra Club at their Annual Clergy Appreciation dinner on October 11

th at the

historic Monument Inn in Baytown!!! 23 clergy attended, including a number of retired priests who live at St. Dominic’s – it was a great get away for them. Our East Houston Club did a fabulous job!!! Some of our Serrans had the opportunity to attend a beautiful Mass celebrated by Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza at the Jubilee Celebration for Priesthood and Consecrated Life at Corpus Christi Church on Sunday, October 14

th. There were 40 religious honored. Our very own Serra Chaplain, Father

James Burkart was honored for his 25 years as a priest – Congratulation again Father James!!! Dynamic Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers was the guest speaker at Guadalupe Radio Annual Fishers for Men Gala on October 16

th. Deacon Harold’s message was awesome and very inspiring – bottom line

– we need more holy men and women. Candice, was the honoree and gave a beautiful talk honoring her mother and promoting Serra and Guadalupe Radio – she thanked her family for their support who were in attendance. A big thanks to Fr. James, Fr. Norbert, Fr. Innocent, Fr. Matthew, Seminarians, CGS guests and friends who attended in Candice’s honor. If all of the above wasn’t enough some of our Serrans showed their support at the Legionaires and Consecrated Ladies Annual Gala on Friday, October 19

th at the Woodlands Country Club!!! It was a

great event and helps support a very dedicated and Holy group of religious.

Letter from your President ….

Finally, many thanks to Phil Duggan, our VP of Vocations, for arranging to have Dr. Michael Zizelmann, DDS, as our guest speaker at our October 24

th program meeting. Dr. Zizelmann, an

authority on religious relics, delivered an informative and entertaining talk, which included a display of many of his own religious relics, including one from the true cross of Jesus!!! Luke 10:2 – The harvest is plentiful, but workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into the harvest field. I look forward to hearing from you. Siempre Adelante. Your Brother in Christ,

Ed Tyrrell
