Letter from the editorDear Tukkie
Congratulations! You are nearing the end of your undergraduate journey. Soon you will be done with your degree and the world will be your oyster.
But before you reach that stage, it is important to plan for life after undergraduate studies. You will need to ask yourself the following questions: Will you study further? Will you apply for a job? What kind of job do you want?
Those of you who plan to enter the world of work will be choosing your ideal job and employer, developing job-seeking skills and securing your first job. The Graduate Career Office (GCO) offers a variety of tools to assist with the “transition-to-work” phase. Although the job search might prove frustrating, complex and time-consuming, if done correctly, it will result in a first job that is compatible with your skills and interests. It could be a satisfying start to your career.
The Graduate Career Guide is a booklet that touches on a variety of career-
related topics, such as preparing for interviews and psychometric tests. It also contains the contact details of organisations, and includes profiles of various organisations. The GCO arranges career days that expose students to the various employment opportunities at some of South Africa’s top employers. This year is especially exciting, as the GCO will be launching its new career portal. Here students can make appointments with a consultant to assist in compiling a curriculum vitae (CV) and drafting a cover letter. The GCO also presents interview preparation sessions, and gives students the opportunity to attend various employability and career-related activities.
The GCO wishes you success for your future and shares in your excitement as you complete your degree. We look forward to seeing you at our various career events and providing you with the necessary support to help you embark on your professional career.

Application and interview advice for prospective attorneysLanding a place at a top law firm is easier said than done. Follow-ing these points could prove useful in your application process.
Read through the application form carefully before you complete it. Print a copy and prepare draft answers before submitting the form.
Put yourself in the shoes of the person who will assess you. Are you clear about why you want to pursue a career at this firm?
Ask yourself what skills and abilities you need to demonstrate to secure a place as a candidate attorney at this firm.
What will make you stand out from thousands of applicants? The person reading your form will be assessing many applications, so convey your personality and make the form engaging and interesting.
Don’t undersell yourself. Try to connect your experiences with what you know the recruiter is looking for and give examples of when you have used those skills. It will not come across as “big-headed” if you do this.
Pay attention to your spelling and grammar. You are applying for a job as a lawyer. Written and oral communication is vital to being successful.
Don’t use jargon. Use any work placements (legal
or non-legal) to demonstrate that you understand business, time management, communicating with people and meeting deadlines.
Use legal placements, law fairs, legal open days and information from universities (career advisers, law students, student law society events) to demonstrate your research into and understanding of the law and legal careers. Use the information to support statements on your form.
Don’t quote from the firm’s own publicity, however great it is. It’s you, as well as your reasons for choosing law and the firm that the interviewers are interested in.

Gettingnoticed
Recruiters receive many applications, so make sure your application gets noticed. They look for consistent high academic performance and candidates who can balance academics with sport or cultural involvement at university level. They also look at leadership positions you’ve held at school or university level.
These characteristics are fundamental at graduate level. Your academic average not only speaks to your intellect, but your work ethic, resilient personality and goal orientation. All these are required by your prospective employer.
Yourcurriculumvitae(CV)
It is critical to have only relevant information in your CV. You should include the following information: A cover letter, for which one page is
sufficient. Biographic information, a section
listing skills and key attributes, work history and references.
Academic information and qualifications.
Launching your career in lawHave you ever wondered what gives law students a competitive edge when applying for articles of clerkship? Here are a few tips to make your application process easier.
Previous work experience, even if it is during your university holidays, will be beneficial. This does not have to be in the industry in which you are hoping to get employment, but anywhere that has increased your appreciation for the world of work and has exposed you to corporate culture.
Please note that no matter how good your CV, you should always take note of the opening and closing dates for various applications.
Preparing for the interview
Once you have been invited for an interview, know that your CV has made the recruiter believe that the person behind the CV has the necessary skills and attributes to excel in this company. Prove them right during your interview. Be engaging and remain consistent with the content of your CV.
It is important to be presentable with neat hair and nails. Formalwear and tasteful jewellery always work well. Try not to interrogate the interviewer when it is your turn to ask questions.
Graduate Career Guide
10 Graduate Career Guide 2015
You should list your top three questions and be satisfied with them. Good questions you could ask during an interview are the following: Should I be offered a position in
your firm, how can I prepare myself for work while still completing my studies?
What else could I do to prepare myself for work while completing my studies?
What tips do you have for someone who wants to excel after joining your firm?
Some of the most important emotional intelligence traits that recruiters look for in a candidate are resilience, a high level of motivation, assertiveness, flexibility and stress tolerance, as well as problem-solving skills. It would also be beneficial to be aware of local and international current affairs and to have an opinion on these matters.
ReadyourCVandcoverlettertomakesureyouranswersmatchyourCVandcoverletter.
Common errors that students makewhencompletinganapplication
A number of errors could cost you the job. Proofread all of your correspondence to make sure that you have not made any spelling or grammar mistakes. Some applications will require a photograph, and attaching an inappropriate photograph could decrease your chances of employment. Using inappropriate language, such as slang or “SMS language” in email conversations reflects poorly on your communication skills. Some candidates have made the mistake of providing incomplete information, such as missing attachments or contact details.
Let your application represent you as best as possible. Only relevant, job-related information needs to be included. Keep your CV concise and your cover letter sincere. It should show your writing ability and convey your motivation for completing an application.

How to look better on paper
Connectingthedots
“All experience is relevant experience if you can connect the dots,” says Dan Farkas, a strategic communication instructor at Ohio University’s EW Scripps School of Journalism. To do this, he tells his students to start by studying the specifi c job requirements. “This gives you [a] baseline. Think back on exactly what you did and how that might refl ect in a modern world.”
“If you worked in quick-service restaurants, for example, you were at the point of sales and probably tried to upsell people,” Farkas says. “You would also have had to deal with customer complaints and there might have been operations effi ciency as well. If you were ever involved in scheduling or training, that could equate to project management or mentorship,” he says.
“Everything mentioned is required in the workforce millions of times a day and
chances are we’ve all done it,” he says. “We just have to fi nd creative ways to show and tell.”
No matter the job, there’s something you learned that can be used somewhere else.
Don’t underestimate yourself
After doing the same job for several years, it can be quite easy to underestimate the contributions that you’ve made to your organisation, according to Australian executive career coach, Mary Goldsmith. It’s important to remember that industries and organisations are in a constant state of fl ux, which keeps most employees learning more than they realise.
“Even if the job scope seems much the same, just keeping abreast of technological advances, such as the introduction of new accounting

Barna Cherian, a second-year university student studying engineering in India, doesn’t know where to start when it comes to his CV. He’s never done an internship or held a job, his university doesn’t rank very high and his grades are only average. His problem is that when recruiters come to his campus next semester, they’ll be expecting something more than just a blank slate.
software or an HR records management system, takes time to learn and apply successfully,” says Goldsmith who encourages her clients to include what she calls “secondments” – projects or committees they’ve been involved with in addition to their usual responsibilities.
This includes times when they acted for a manager who was on leave or managed the team conference or training programme. If you’ve ever mentored or provided coaching support to new colleagues, “these can indicate ongoing learning, capability and skills development,” she says. Also include any internal training and development you’ve had, along with volunteer stints. “All of these activities can be added as achievements and give oomph to an otherwise ho-hum CV,” Goldsmith says
Showwhatyoucando
Shikha Arora, a senior recruiter with SAP Asia, who is based in Singapore, says she has noticed a trend toward competency-based interviews, which is a welcome change for people without the most glamorous experience. “The way to beautify your resumé when you do not have extraordinary achievements to mention is by highlighting your competencies and skills,” she says. “[These] are transferable and do not depend upon the role.”
Something’s missing
Without any relevant job experience or only scant job history – or even just because your job history is aging – it’s easy to feel like your CV can’t sing or soar, says New York-based Patrice Tanaka, founder of Joyful Planet LLC, a business and career coaching strategies firm.
But there are ways around that, she says. Instead of just listing your job history, include other, more interesting items that are relevant, and break them into different sections. These sections can include a summary of your qualifications, your key skills, an “About me” section, your interests, community involvement, awards and recognition, and any praise from former employers. Tanaka says that the most boring resumés are ones that only provide job history in chronological order and give no sense of the candidate’s passions, hopes, dreams and purpose.

Can your body language win you the job?
Happy medium
The first contact between an interviewer and interviewee is usually a handshake. First impressions often determine how the rest of the interview goes, so this can be one of the most important elements of getting it right, according to David Alssema, a body language expert and training facilitator with Paramount Training & Development in Perth, Australia.
Shake hands the way the interviewer does, Alssema recommended in an email. “Matching the strength or greeting shows you want to be an equal. Overpowering a handshake can signal a dominant attitude towards the meeting.”
Zonesofspace
No matter our culture, we all have and are – at least subconsciously – aware of four zones of space around us. They are (from the farthest to the closest)
public, social, personal and intimate. It is important to be aware of these during an interview, according to Nick Morgan, a Boston-based speech coach and author of Power cues: the subtle science of leading groups, persuading others, and maximizing your personal impact. “The only significant things that happen between people happen in personal and intimate space,” he wrote in an email. “Since intimate space is off limits [in an interview], you want to get into the personal space of the interviewer,” if you want the person to be inclined to decide in your favour.
Make your move
While the handshake brings us into the personal space that we want, typical seating arrangements in an interview tend to move us away. “So look for ways to tactfully move into the personal space of the interviewer.”
(Continued on page 20)
While everyone knows it’s important to dress smartly for an interview, less obvious – and less known – is the importance of how you carry yourself. What hidden cues do you give when you walk through the doorway, shake hands or sit? Three body language experts share their insights on what moves to make and what to avoid in an interview.
Where will your talent take you?

For example, you might move your chair slightly or sit on the same side of a round table. Once you’re seated, consider other ways to close the distance. Lean forward, for example, just not too much. “We increase trust and connection with people when we close the distance between us, even by small amounts,” he says.
Open for business
It’s very important to keep your body language “open,” according to Morgan. You’re likely to be nervous and you might be clutching your hands or folding your arms. “These feel safe and comfortable, but also distancing and disconnecting for the other party,” he says. In addition, “[folding your arms] shows that you are disinterested, and it also prevents you from leaning,” says Alssema.
The eyes have it
“Eye contact is important and any less or any more than a reasonable amount may indicate other attitudes,” said Alssema. What’s just right? Alssema suggests mirroring the amount of time the interviewer gives you eye contact. If there is a panel of interviewers, it’s important to provide the right mix of time for each person. “Respond to each person individually with eye contact when answering questions,” he said. Avoid glancing around.
People often make the mistake of equating good eye contact with never looking away – but this would be a mistake, too, according to Atlanta,
Georgia-based Patti Wood, a body language expert and author of SNAP Making the most of first impressions, body language, and charisma.
“It is normal to look away from time to time as you speak, because you’re accessing information in your brain,” she wrote in an email. Just don’t let yourself drift off when the interviewer is speaking. “After giving an answer, remember to make eye contact and listen to the interviewer. Eye contact sends the message that you are serious and engaged,” Wood says.
Don’t forget to breathe deeply
The moment people get nervous, they start breathing very quickly. That can wreak havoc in an interview.
“When you take quick shallow breaths, you reduce your ability to think clearly,” says Wood. “This may keep you from answering questions quickly and succinctly.”
Instead, try to breathe deeply from low down in your belly. “[It is] one key to feeling clearheaded, energised, and confident,” she says. “Practice breathing more slowly, using your diaphragm, belly, ribcage and lower back in the process.” Of course, this isn’t something you’ll want to do in your actual interview. “But try it whenever you get anxious and certainly before your interview,” she says.

Making it through the recruitment processThe recruitment process is often standardised and strictly administered in order to appoint the right people at a firm. This process can be daunting, but with the right preparation, you could be calm and collected on the day of your interview or psychometric assessment.
Interviews
As you have most probably heard, first impressions are crucial in the recruitment process. Always dress smartly and make sure you are well groomed. Shake hands and make eye contact with anyone you meet at the interview and be at least 15 minutes early. Stay calm and be honest during the interview. Also remember to bring a hard copy of your CV with you. It should be simplified, accurate, up to date and short (three to four pages).
Psychometricassessments
During some recruitment processes, candidates may be asked to undergo psychometric assessments. The two most popular forms of psychometric assessment are personality and cognitive ability assessments.
A personality assessment is not timed, which means that you should not rush to finish it. You should be 100% honest with your answers, as there are questions
in place to measure this. Make sure the administrator explains the questions before the assessment begins. This will help you to relax and answer accurately.
A cognitive ability assessment should be administered first thing in the morning. Make sure the administrator explains the instructions clearly and ask questions if you are unsure of anything. Try to keep track of time when answering questions, as this assessment measures your cognitive processing speed. If it is a pen and paper assessment, you should answer the questions you are sure of instead of lingering on a question and wasting time.

Careers at Spoor & FisherABOUT US
Spoor & Fisher specialises in all aspects of intellectual property law including patents, trade marks, copyright and designs. This includes related litigation, commercial transactions, due diligence, portfolio management and audits. In addition to the normal services, our trade marks department has specialist teams dealing with anti-counterfeiting and ambush marketing and our patent department has specialist teams dealing with biotechnology, nanotechnology and computer software related inventions. Together with Spoor & Fisher Jersey, our associate office in the Channel Islands, we provide a service in filing patents and trade marks in South Africa, the rest of Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
To best serve the needs of our clients we have offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria.
WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (IP)?
Successful innovation and marketing attracts imitators. In a competitive world it is increasingly important for businesses to protect the originality of new products, the confidentiality of know-how and the distinctiveness of names, trade marks and get-up.
These aspects are referred to collectively as “intellectual property” or in short “IP”. These products of human creativity have a definite and often very considerable commercial value. Most businesses rely on several intellectual property components. None can exist without any. Intellectual property describes a range of instruments that can be used to define, protect and exploit new and innovative ideas. The idea could take any of a range of forms such as invention, a product name, a logo, the plot of a novel, musical theme tune or the design of a product.
Many factorsinteract to make a successful career.

Coronation Asset Management (Pty) Ltd is an authorised financial services provider. Trust is EarnedTM.
You stare up at the glowing numbers, trying to avoid all eye contact, aware of the gaping silence. You’re not thinking about cables and counterweights or the depth of the lift shaft. You step out on the 34th fl oor and realise that the things you trust most, never stop working to earn it.
To fi nd out how Coronation can earn your trust, speak to your fi nancial advisor or visit www.coronation.com
“WHICH FLOOR?” IS THE ONLY QUESTION ON YOUR MIND.
